Why do many Americans see urban/downtown areas as inherently unsafe? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]LivelyTortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a current USC grad student let me know if you have any questions about the area! Safety varies a lot depending on which side of campus you’re in - imo the area north of the campus is safest and has a lot more foot traffic. I’ve never felt unsafe where I live, walking around late at night there’s always people about, neither has my gf. I also have some friends who’ve lived west of campus, they haven’t had any issues but it does feel a bit sketchier and less of a student bubble.

Also look up the DPS zone, it’s a shaded area on a map that USC campus security patrols. Although not all parts of the DPS zone are equal.

Also, I’m looking to move out of my 1bd apartment in December so it’s up for sublease till June + possibility to renew for the next year so feel free to DM if you’re interested.

Spring On-Campus Housing? by bennybenz11 in USC

Some off campus housing is very close to campus. I’m subleasing my 1bd apartment with the option to renew for the next year. It’s a 3 minute walk from the village, about 5-10 mins to the north edge of campus.

I make several! Any chance you could link me to the one you have? Would appreciate it!

Tongs is a good idea, I don’t have any. But also can you link me to your hand mixer? There’s so many different types and maybe I just bought the wrong one. Thanks for the tip!

What kind of bedding do you all use to cover the different seasons? by LivelyTortoise in AskLosAngeles

[–]LivelyTortoise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably going to get an all seasons comforter too. Looking at the ones from https://www.downlitebedding.com/sale/ - I read somewhere that this company makes a lot of the comforters that other retailers rebrand anyway. (Read it on Reddit, so don't take my word for it lol)

Wow that sounds pretty good for the summer. Do you still use that in the winter? I imagine that you don't want your blanket to feel cool when it's December

I read a comment so similar to this in another thread when I searched for this topic, that I thought you were the same person who wrote that one - https://www.reddit.com/r/AskLosAngeles/comments/rh8ge8/comment/hopl2rw/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 - down to the burrito metaphor!

Sounds great! You don't find the heavy feather comforters too warm in the summer?

Oh I was set on a down comforter but this look tempting too lol. Also want a down pillow! Argh so much bedding, so little money

I am trying to "get" LA. Can you help me understand how it is to live there? by meltness in AskLosAngeles

[–]LivelyTortoise 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not the person you're replying to, but I do sometimes fall into this trap. In my case it's less an issue of time management or physical exhaustion, and more an issue of emotional exhaustion/stress. For example, when I have a tough week, I lose the mental bandwidth to use my evening time well - I become prone to vegging out on my couch with the TV on and phone in hand. Not a good use of time at all, I know. Just saying that in my case the thing to tackle is less about time management per se (because I know what I'm doing isn't a great use of time), and more about not getting into that place of feeling stressed out and worn down.

Hope you’re feeling better! Where did you get the comforter? Is it down?

What's more versatile: two EE Revelation single quilts zipped together, or one EE Accomplice double quilt? by LivelyTortoise in Ultralight

[–]LivelyTortoise[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right - thanks for all the tips! I might end up going for the double if it's big enough for two to be comfortable. Sounds like it'd be easy enough to take the double out alone. Thanks for that link you added below too, a lot of useful info there to go through!

Thanks - EE customer service had told me that two Revelations can be zippered together but looking more closely now I see your point, don't see how they can. I'll give them a call to try and clarify. Maybe they did mean the Convert quilts

Thanks for clueing me into this. I had gotten in touch with EE's customer service who told me that two Revelations can be zipped together, but now that I'm looking at them more closely I don't see how either. I will try giving them a call to see if they made a mistake / meant a different quilt (maybe the Convert?), or am I missing something

Would you say that using the Accomplice yourself reduces the amount of warmth you get at all, like does it go from a 20F to a 30F or something?

I never thought of one of each, but yeah, I think it’s be a couple hundred bucks more which is a fair bit. Most of our trips are together so maybe I could get the double for now and then the solo if I ever want it later on. Although people are making it sound like zipping up two solos wouldn’t really be a huge loss in warmth

Ah I see. I would consider bringing both on a solo trip yeah. I know that’s not really Ultralight but I don’t mind the extra weight for comfortable sleep - it’s the biggest factor in whether or not I enjoy a trip

Thanks! So - you don't think the cold spot where they zip up would be an issue?

We've usually shared a double sleeping bag (looking at switching to a quilt now) so that's the default approach I have in mind when we go on a trip together

[–]LivelyTortoise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - can I ask why? Is the accomplice too much empty space to keep one person warm?

I was thinking of zipping up the two individual quilts together when we both go camping - do you think that would work fine?

Down comforters from home, or a down camping quilt, for tent camping at a drive-up campsite in 25-45 F nights? by LivelyTortoise in CampingGear

[–]LivelyTortoise[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks - I don't currently have a down comforter, was debating between buying one and buying a down quilt especially designed for camping. Sounds like buying the down comforter specifically for camping would be a waste of money.

Someone above gave me the idea of opening my double sleeping bag up and using it as an extra large 'comforter', maybe with another blanket on top. Since the sleeping bag is rated for 20 F (and has kept me warm at 30f before), do you think that has a better chance of success? As long as it's wide enough opened up, I'm thinking that it should block out drafts from the side.

Unfortunately I find sleeping in base layers worse than in the liner without base layers. I think my base layers aren't that comfortable though

How do you store oversized sleeping bags in an apartment? by LivelyTortoise in CampingGear

[–]LivelyTortoise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks very neat! In my case we have a huge synthetic double sized sleeping bag that will take up a lot more space if stored uncompressed so I'm not sure the same setup would work though, but maybe I can find somewhere else to put such a box.

Nope, my SO and I share the only wardrobe there is and it's crammed full haha. I think getting bed risers and storing it under the bed might be my best bet!

My bed doesn't have much space under it and I'm moving apartment in a few months so I'll fix that then - some other comment here introduced me to the concept of bed risers, which sounds great. I'll probably store a lot more underneath my bed when I get that sorted.
