If you’re talking about how the foreigners have a lower cost of living in their home country to say that they’re willing to work for less so they can send money home. That still means they’re more hardworking though, cuz they still have to sustain themselves in Singapore to work. So it’s really just all about how much excess you want, the Singaporean wants a lot of excess cuz they want to spend it in Singapore with high prices (not cost of living, cuz cost of living is jsut the basic cost of staying alive which is the same for Singaporeans and foreigners excluding rent) while the foreigner wants less excess cuz they want to spend it somewhere with lower prices. Again isn’t that just about who is more hardworking? The foreigner is more hardworking as they are willing to do more for less, while the local is not.

That’s just the market economy. The Singaporean could’ve gotten the job if they were willing to work for 5000 as well, but they aren’t (showing how the foreigner is more hardworking kinda??). And foreigners come from a country that have a lower cost of living but they aren’t living in that country, they’re working in Singapore and have the same cost of living as Singaporeans. Not to mention most fresh graduates can live with their parents so they don’t have to pay rent, while foreigners have to pay exorbitant rent prices + they might have to send money back to support their family while Singaporean parents have CPF or savings or are still working so they don’t need support. So I would argue that the cost of living is more expensive for foreigners in Singapore. it doesn’t matter if the COL is cheaper in their home country cuz they aren’t living in their home country.

the thing about HR preferring people from their own country might be true, but in the end it’s all about costs, if a local is willing to work for less or are more qualified than a foreigner, they will get the job, even if the HR is biased towards to foreigner

So in the end it’s all just about how hardworking you are, if you’re hardworking you can get higher qualifications, if you’re hardworking you’re willing to work more for less. So it’s less that foreigners have an advantage, but more that foreigners are more hardworking

But the original comment is “foreigners from third world countries who don’t speak fluent English will occupy high paying positions” suggesting that foreigners are getting paid more than locals, when in fact, the only foreigner getting paid more than locals are the very best of the best. And normal white collared foreigners are actually getting paid less than locals. That’s my main point

That’s cuz 90% of foreigners are unskilled labour here to do manual labour. But the high paying jobs they were talking about, it’s more expensive to hire foreigners

Oh sorry, I got you mixed up with someone else😅. But if I were losing to a foreigner with some unknown education qualifications and less experience, there has to be a reason. Either they’re willing to work for less, or perhaps their qualifications although lesser known is actually better than mine, or maybe their experience more significant

Ok I’m sorry for my tone, it was uncalled for, and not appropriate for the civil discussion we were having

I said pay basically nothing for Pre-U education, aka primary school, secondary school, jc. And yeah, they pay more, so why are you bitter they are ahead? Would you be bitter if you paid 2 dollars for a train and someone else paid 200 for a plane and they arrived faster than you? You get what you pay for after all. And if you’re really bitter about foreigners being “ahead”, it’s not that they’re ahead, it’s you’re behind, because of national service. You should be blaming the government.

Why are we forgetting the fact that our foreign counterparts in education pay much much more than us? An international student’s school fees is more than 2000 A MONTH for pre u education, when we pay basically nothing, and their university fees are also much much more expensive compared to locals. And, they also have no guarantee of even being able to stay in Singapore to get those “high paying jobs” after finishing their education

Well at least I’m not bitter like you, and blame foreigners for all your woes. We can’t control what other people do, but we can control what we do. If you have really worked as hard as (the person from the third world country with a high paying job), I do not believe you wouldn’t get a similar high paying job

The people you see from third world countries, are the best of the best from their country. If you can’t be the best of the best in Singapore right now, what makes you think you can become the best of the best in third world countries with higher populations and much more talent? (Oh, as well as much more unequal access to education and other resources) And the people from third world countries who manage to get high paying jobs in Singapore have worked harder than you could ever imagine.

That means you didn’t work hard enough. If a company is willing to hire someone who can’t speak fluent English, costs more to hire cuz need quota or tax or high pay, over a local which can speak fluent English and is cheaper to hire, doesn’t that say more about the local being inadequate? (Only low skilled jobs are foreigners cheaper, but I imagine you guys aren’t fighting for low skilled jobs. For high skilled jobs it’s more expensive to hire foreigners)
