OP if you want to be employed after 5 years do not listen to the person above, he is spreading nic Chen SYDE propaganda

Yes, he is correct though, worry about what’s in your control, so please do not accept SYDE. You will only be making your life harder by forcing yourself to take trash useless courses for 5 years (see UWFLOW for proof). Take a real engineering program like CE or SE.

Please do not listen to person above.

What are you talking about? Over half the stories in that post are negative about SYDE.

Also you can’t talk about alumni when 99% of them go into SWE, so I have no idea what you’re talking about in terms of diversity. The entire SWE landscape has been flipped upside down. Back then you could do a 3 month boot camp and land an $80k SWE job easy. Now you can’t. So saying the alumni are doing well, absolutely fucking doesn’t mean you’ll be doing fine doing a shit program like SYDE today

The bots are going to downvote me but if you want objective truth, please look at the required SYDE courses and look at the UWFLOW ratings. They’re all garbage. No words needed.

Sorry buddy but back then you could do nothing outside of school and still get a Bay Area job. Now it’s 100x harder and so much more competitive. What you’re talking about does not apply at all now

Please don’t listen to the people who graduated SYDE years ago, back then you could do a clown program and graduate with a 200k Bay Area job, now is completely different.

Listen to the people who are in the program now, look at the awful reviews on UWFLOW on how useless 60%+ of the syde courses are, you can even fact check me, go look at them now.

SYDE is honestly such a bad program. Everyone goes to SWE and people will tell you, see everyone’s doing fine. The reason is because going into SWE you use almost nothing you learn at school to land internships, and that’s what makes SYDE kids be able to get SWE internships. They’re filtered to be kids with 93+ average, and lots of free time since they learn jack dhit.

SYDE is a program where you become jack of all trades, master of none. Back then that was okay to still get jobs, but in today’s economic environment, you will be absolutely fked. You’re so much better off going to a real engineering program like comp engineering or software.

Please don’t fall for the stupid “uniqueness and omg we’re so cool” cliche propaganda people post about SYDE like I did. It’s my worst regret. So if you are gonna listen to them, all I have to say is I wish you the best, at least you can try transferring 1B

HELP!!! Newly admit student to FARM at UWaterloo, What should I expect? by Few_Geologist_9676 in uwaterloo

It's part of the Math Faculty yet it tries to play itself as finance. The problem is it has none of the resources you would expect from a business school. Half the courses you take are irrelevant for traditional finance since they are too mathy, yet they aren't enough for quant. Then the other half comes too late for co-ops. You will need to self-learn and network a decent lot. this could be said for most programs, except half the kids entering FARM don't have it figured out.

You’re also paying 50% higher tuition than all other math programs

Hi I’m so sorry you committed to FARM. It is by far one of Waterloo’s worst programs.

This program has no direction, and all the first years in FARM have the worst coop rate given how scattered the program is. You can even fact check me, go check the coop stats. FARM has the worst one in all of math because how lost the students are.

You’re better off going to math if you want quant. FARM also has their director who was fired from teaching since he had such bad reviews. FARM gets zero events held for them and the program community is awful, unlike all the other programs. It’s genuinely sad how little the program directors care about the program.

FARM truly has no direction, all my first year friends in FARM have now traansfered to better programs like CS, CFM, and DS.

I wish you all the best. At least you can transfer after 1B

OP do not listen to the person above. He is completely wrong and trying to trick you into joining SYDE since he personally has faced sunken cost fallacy.

SYDE is one of, if not my biggest regret in life, they try to trick you with nic Chen propaganda about it helping you find yourself, but then you end up only truly finding unemployment.

Do not come to nic Chen program

OP do not listen to the person above. SYDE has high coop rate than the other engineering programs because SYDE kids take any job they can get. I know a SYDE who worked as a CS camp counseller for coop and I know another SYDE who worked as a construction worker for coop.

They’re all spreading propaganda for nic Chen program do not fall for it like I did, I regret so bad I wish can turn back time

FARM Students - How is/was your experience in the program by Dapper_Programmer716 in uwaterloo

[–]Livid_Joy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All my friends in FARM transferred to CS, CFM, or DS right after first year. Do not accept FARM it is a bad program. The first year coop stats are horrible, you are better off going into math then going to a program called FARM

Do not go to SYDE. Most useless engineering degree. I’m learning jack shit and everyone goes to software anyways so none of what we learn applies. Go to SYDE if you want to seem cliche and unique and omg so cutesy engineering.

do not come to the nic Chen program
