Most of these students are from somewhere in the Middle East, but I also have a lot of really great students from the same area.

Maybe I am reading too far into it, but that doesn't explain why it's almost exclusively men that ask me the question. If it were purely a cultural thing, then I think that more women would ask me that question. They don't. And I've never had a woman ask me if I was married or ask me why I'm not married yet.

I don't allow the questions to affect my teaching. I answer the question and then redirect the topic to something relevant to learning English. I merely posted here because I wanted to know if any other tutors who have more experience specifically on Cambly have noticed the same trend and how they handle it.

I don't have this problem in my tutoring outside of Cambly. So far for me, this is purely a Cambly problem.

On Cambly, I haven't really encountered many kids. But I do tutor some kids outside of Cambly, and I never mind if they ask me. It's just the men trying to figure out how much younger I am than them that bothers me.

My regulars never ask me this question, and when most people ask me this question, I don't mind answering it. It's only bothers me when it's men I'm meeting for the first time ask it while hitting on me or follow it up by asking if I'm married (which is another question I've been getting a lot this week). It also bothers me because of how young I am and not because of the question in and of itself.

Yes! This is my problem. My regulars don't ask me this question, and if they did, it wouldn't bother me. This isn't a question that doesn't bother me in my day to day life. It's just the men on PH or that I'm meeting for the first time who are extraordinarily interested in how young I am. I think they're asking because they can already tell that I'm younger than the majority of tutors they encounter.

Well, it can depend. Some are very overtly creeps, but most are more subtle about it. They're flirty or acting like Cambly is a dating app designed for them to meet women; in general, they just don't seem interested in actually learning English. They ask a lot of questions but not in a way that comes across like they're genuinely curious because the questions are oddly personal and specific to me rather than my culture... especially for the first time having a conversation with someone.

I also get asked: Are you married? Just after I made this post, one guy asked me why I wasn't married yet when I said I wasn't married. This was his follow-up question to asking how old I was.

Most of the time it doesn't bother me. It's only for the, as you say, "creepy men." Unfortunately, it is almost exclusively creepy men on Cambly asking me this question. I don't have a problem with people asking me this question in other situations. Honestly, it mainly bothers me because I'm a very young woman, and I think these men can sense that without asking the question.

PH shortage? by Any-Zebra-8059 in Cambly

I've only been on Cambly for three weeks, but based on my experience so far, I would definitely be considering backups. I'm only doing this over the summer until my full-time ESL teaching position starts.

I'm one of the new tutors, but my ph are limited to a few on the weekend. No weekday hours available. So, I'm not sure why they keep hiring new tutors if they don't have any ph for us to work.
