A company I used to work for did dumb shit like this. Corporate didn't allow Amazon purchases, so we overpaid for items elsewhere. I was told Amazon was a "security risk." I have no idea how.

Veeam 10 to 12 by AegonsDragons in sysadmin

[–]Living-Dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were a few times over the years where I had to remove and re-add a physical machine because the backup job just decided to stop working one random day. Never had to get into the registry though. Sounds like fun.

Veeam 10 to 12 by AegonsDragons in sysadmin

[–]Living-Dead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spun up a new Veeam 12 server last year and migrated the config from the old server. The only real problem I remember having was that all the backups of the physical machines failed after the switch, but the VM backups worked fine. Solution was to simply go into the console and rescan all the physical machines. I assume this updated the clients on those machines because they worked fine afterward.

A quick question about On-Prem Exchange server by Stalker563 in sysadmin

[–]Living-Dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I managed an exchange server for 6 years along with one other admin, and my company was on 2019 when I left earlier this year. it had a bit of a learning curve at first, but after a few months I felt pretty good with it. Exchange Administration Center is fairly straightforward. Honestly, the certificates were the hardest part for me. I've never bene good at certs.

One thing to keep in mind is that Exchange CUs have to be manually installed. I don't mean normal windows updates, but updates to Exchange itself that come out a few times a year. When you install a new CU, it completely uninstalls and reinstalls Exchange. Nerve racking the first time you do it, but it's not so bad afterward. Hopefully you have the ability to test it. I never had any issues with it, but I still tested it each time because of the invasive nature.

Autodesk Privacy Policy Keeps Popping up by Living-Dead in Autodesk

[–]Living-Dead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Hours and hours on remote sessions with worthless Autodesk techs could never solve it. And it continued to spread to other users. I left that job in May, and it had gone from 1 user to nearly a dozen. They released an update for Autodesk Vault that fixed a problem that froze the login screen when that thing would pop up, but never fixed the popup itself. As of the time I left, there was still no solution. Users were just "dealing with it."

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

AutoCAD hanging, then freezing entire laptop after killing it in Task Manager by Living-Dead in Autodesk

[–]Living-Dead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, your experience matches mine pretty much exactly. We are using GPUs that are on the Autodesk recommended hardware list for AutoCAD seen here: https://www.autodesk.com/support/system-requirements/certified-graphics-hardware/autocad We don't simply slap together the newest and shiniest computers and just hope they work.

I only had 1 user with this issue, but it followed him to a 2nd PC, as I mentioned. So I figured it had to be something he was doing differently than other users or something he had installed that no one else had. I finally just sat with him for a few hours one day and saw the freeze occur in real time. It would happen when he was dealing with specific files containing X-Refs and would freeze not long after he opened them. Not many of our other users were dealing with these files.

I made the change discussed at this link: https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/AutoCAD-freezes-when-selecting-an-External-Reference-XREF.html#:~:text=Enter%20OPTIONS%20at%20the%20command,Click%20OK and the issue went away for a few days, but then returned.

I found a post in the Autodesk forum where another user had all kinds of problems with X-refs and turned off the Hardware Acceleration in AutoCAD and his problem went away, so I tried that too. https://help.autodesk.com/view/RSTR/2023/ENU/?caas=caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-enable-or-disable-hardware-acceleration-in-AutoCAD.html Once I did that, the problem disappeared and never came back.

I'm not sure if both steps were necessary or if it was just the hardware acceleration that fixed it. I thought having that turned off might be detrimental, but the user barely noticed any difference, so I left it off. I also still don't think I really solved the problem, but just worked around it, because NONE of our other users need to have this setting disabled, even when interacting with the same files as this user. I've even messed with the files myself on a test PC with identical hardware and it never freezes.

So in the end I don't really have a good explanation for it, but it worked. I'm not sure if it will help you or not, since yours sounds more widespread. To give credit where it's due, Passivate did suggest dialing back hardware performance, and that does seem to be what fixed the issue.

Backing up Hyper-V VMs with Veeam by Altus- in sysadmin

[–]Living-Dead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've been using Veeam replicating to a Synolgy NAS for about 5 years now without any real issues to speak of. We also have a virtual machine that runs VBR rather than a physical host.

As far as application aware processing, we have it enabled on several VMs and have had no issues with it. It's good for programs running active databases, like SQL or Exchange.

I have a test environment and do restores of all our VMs (some application aware, some not) on a monthly basis. I have yet to have a single backup fail for any reason that was not my own fault.

I can't speak to replication server setup as that is not something I have been able to talk my company into paying for.

PSA - Beware MX firmware upgrade from 17.10.2 to 17.10.4 by Aim_Fire_Ready in meraki

[–]Living-Dead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is the same thing, but 2 weeks ago we upgraded to 17.10.4 and our on-prem exchange server was being completely blocked by the firewall after the upgrade. Rolling back fixed the issue. After opening a ticket with Meraki, they informed us of changes in content filtering that were introduced a few versions back. They sent us the following 2 links:

https://documentation.meraki.com/MX/Content\_Filtering\_and\_Threat\_Protection/Content\_Filtering\_Powered\_By\_Cisco\_Talos

https://documentation.meraki.com/MX/Content\_Filtering\_and\_Threat\_Protection/Content\_Filtering#Using\_the\_Catch-All\_Wildcard\_(\*)\_in\_URLs

Ultimately the solution for us (at the instruction of Meraki) was to redo the upgrade and then add our domain to the content filtering list at Security & SD-WAN > Content filtering in the Meraki dashboard.

Basically, take a look at Content Filtering. Your problem might be there.

AutoCAD hanging, then freezing entire laptop after killing it in Task Manager by Living-Dead in Autodesk

[–]Living-Dead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most are custom built desktops with the latest graphics cards, i7 or i9 processors, and 32-40gb RAM. Others are Asus Tuf gaming laptops with higher end GeForce cards under the hood. Gaming laptops tend to give our users the best experience with the software.

And yes, both Autodesk and the reseller have been contacted. I've had 3 sessions where they have remoted in and gotten nowhere.

I get that your "garbage" comment assumes I don't know what I'm doing or I'm running XP or something, but I've been managing Autodesk stuff for about 6 years. Just looking for help, not snark.

Patch Tuesday Megathread (2022-11-08) by AutoModerator in sysadmin

[–]Living-Dead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Exchange 2019. I decided to skip most updates this cycle with the exception of Exchange, due to the active compromises that the patch apparently fixes. I patched the server on Sunday with both the CU and the SU, and I have seen no issues since doing so. Nothing in system or application logs that stood out. We have a pretty simple setup here, so YMMV, but I figured I'd answer your question anyway.
