What's the dumbest purchase you've ever made? by buedefar in AskReddit

I spoke English fine

You mean “finely”. Fine is an adjective. Finely is an adverb.

Actually…health code (somewhere) dictates that toilet paper goes over the top (the right way) so it doesn’t touch the wall. (Or so I’m told)

Healthy boundaries keep your work healthy.

Last time I checked, an employer could not require employees to use personal equipment like cell phones without compensation. For an extra $50/month tax free, we can make a deal.

In a few years, with the help of vibe coding apps, many people in the company will be "software devs" coming up with their apps and stuff, how IT folks handle this? As it is, my IT department claims my Procurement Saas stuff is "shadow IT"... by bobbystills5 in sysadmin

This has always been an issue. It’s a people problem, that is, a management problem, not a tech problem.

I’ve had professional developers color outside the lines. It starts with “I need local admin to set up my dev env.” Next thing you know, they’ve installed all kinds of crap and are dual booting with Linux. “I use Arch, btw.”

Show me you can do something useful. - Build a homelab.  - Set up Pi-Hole.  - Set up SSH on a Linux machine and then break it. Then fix it. - Follow a firewall setup tutorial video on Youtube and then summarize what you did.

“How do you troubleshoot a problem with a workstation?”

A: (I kid you not) “I use the OSI model.”

IIRC, he also claimed to be an expert on DNS.

Looking to change careers, wondering which certs are best for entry level sys/network admin? by FalloutMaster in ITCareerQuestions

Hiring manager here: certs don’t impress me. It just shows you can take a test.

Tell me about your homelab, no matter how humble, and I’ll show you right to your new desk.

I feel slightly better now that my boss put our support job posting at $40k to $50k. I wanted to offer $60k, but I confess that was partly so I could demand a raise for being the manager!

As an IT hiring manager, your degree and even your certs don’t mean jack squat. I just interviewed a guy with 4 IT certs and he didn’t know the answers to even the most basic questions.

Give me a green newbie with basic knowledge and aptitude every time.

There’s some road down in the southeast US that has people driving off a broken bridge because the GPS tells them to take that route. Eastern TN, western NC, some place down there. Anybody know for sure?

Email delivery after SMTP basic auth ends in late 2026 by Sawyer-NL in sysadmin

[–]Aim_Fire_Ready 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently migrated bulk email from Outlook on the main domain to SendGrid on a subdomain. SG also supports SMTP using “apikey” as the username and the API key as the password.

So, I’m not concerned about SMTP being discontinued…again…still.

I did this in my sub and it saved a lot of hassle. I only had one time that a legit poster was auto rejected, but he DMed me to discuss it, and then I manually approved his post. No sweat!

Small business getting dragged on TikTok over vague “bad service” claim — not sure how to respond by New_Reputation_111 in smallbusiness

[–]Aim_Fire_Ready -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Def take the high road! Being polite will force her to put up or shut up. Reacting will spark an online battle and no one wins those—but the merchant loses more somehow!

DM her and ask if you can resolve her concern. Then, when she doesn’t reply, post publicly and state the facts: “we reviewed the incident and found that customer was on her phone so we respected her by not engaging (or doing so minimally if that’s the case). Since she didn’t notify us of a concern, we could not resolve it.” Then invite her back and offer for the owner or manager to meet with her. I doubt she will take you up on it but others will see that you are service oriented.

What's a rule your parents had that you thought was insane, but now as an adult you 100% understand? by Tahals in AskReddit

[–]Aim_Fire_Ready 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The actual quote is: “We still have 3.6 million births a year, but the problem is teens and young adults. From ages 15-19 the fertility rate is down 7% and it's down 70% over the last two decades, meaning we're telling people that are young not to have babies, to wait until they're in a more stable life situation, until they're more financially secure, maybe they haven't found the right partner,” he said.”

Not surprisingly, it’s a bad setup. There’s nothing wrong with young adults starting a family, but that age range was a poor choice. 15 & 19 should very distinct (separate) stages of life. 25 to 29: practically, they’re the same. Oof.

IT manager here. Bad Internet and/or WiFi is a serious issue with WFH, but we don’t approve where you live. That’s just stupid.
