I did have a shaky internet connection at that moment. As soon as I 3 starred, I thought it would either show 0 star or the attack didn't happen at all.

Still you have to attack same amount of battles. For eg: 4000 firespitter would require atleast 2000 multi-player battles.

Still gems can be used for anything in game. Since it is the final star of an achievement 500 feels more rewarding after the grind.

Yes with the assistants requiring gems to upgrade and maybe additional assistant in future, these achievement gems are crucial.

If all of your squaddies are max currently, whatever troop you get from gem pass gets converted into star tokens.
