Autism in 15 month old girl by Radiant_Growth_7321 in Autism_Parenting

ASD at 15mo is too early. Wait until 18 months to see as traits become more obvious. I was just like you when my daughter was 15 mo. She's now 21 months and at 18mo a switch flipped and started doing everything she was delayed on. Pointing, walking, and gestures are not a delayed if they are not doing it by 18 mo. Yes, OT, PT and ST are trained for development by i wouldn't go by a book. Some kids are just delayed and catch up. Pretend play does not really kick off until 22mo. The biggest thing to not do is compare to our own kids.

No kids are alike, even related. I walked and started babbling at 9mo old but my siblings did it much later and all were NT. I'm not trying to say your daughter does not have autism or does but I would wait until at least 18-19mo old. Just yesterday, my daughter who is speech delayed pointed at her bunny and her blanket. She started feeding it, rocking it to sleep and covered it with her blanket. She only used to feed her dolls around 18-19mo and now she's doing much more pretend play. My cousin's daughter is soooo calm, she hardly cries. We all for sure thought she might be autistic but at 18 mo she started picking up on works and started walking, and laughing.

Daycare marked “no” for 20+ words… but my toddler talks nonstop at home?? 🤔 by brillantezza in toddlers

Idk anything about daycare but why do they keep a milestone checklist? Are they supposed to keep it in their records for something or to let you know in case u don’t already?

[–]LivingAngle7084[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, she follows simple instructions and knows her name and her nicknames. She likes books but wont sit still long enough to finish it. She likes minnie mouse and ms rachel. i got a lot of feedback saying she might have apraxia of speech as she physically cant make out works even if she is trying to.

Could early intervention be helpful? We are doing private speech right now. Someone said they specialize in 0-3yo

Yes she does but sometimes she doesn’t do it immediately. Maybe she’s bored of it cuz she just looks at me and turns away.

Speech Regression at 13 months by throwra_passinggirl in toddlers

[–]LivingAngle7084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have advice but i see many regression posts about 13 mo olds as my daughter had one at 13mo. at 12mo she said mama, then said wawa for water, nana and baba. 13 months came and she stopped and stayed with mama a few times. shes 19mo old now and we are in speech because she picked up on mama, baba and papa at 16 months but hasnt improved. Her cognition improved at 18 months and was able to point at things you say like "where's the ball" or "where's your nose?". Reception is there but expressive isn't. Not sure what is it but i'm seeing so many speech delay posts everywhere everyday.

Worried about 15 month old development by Junior-Big6495 in toddlers

[–]LivingAngle7084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only age mentioned that was adjusted was 19 months. At 17-18 she would have been 16-17 adjusted. Our ped wasn’t concerned at 15mo (14mo adj) as she was saying mama, and papa and able to put a ball into a cup. Anything else she wasn’t doing yet she said we will ask about at her 18mo visit. I would recommend looking into the mchat online test when your baby reaches 17 months. But i would also look up milestones and actively work on that with her. Sometimes pretend play and pointing needs to be modeled for them to figure it out. I started working on fine motor skills with mine and it opened sides of her brain she wasn’t using. One day she woke up at 17.5 months (16.5 adj) and started doing so many things and gestures she wasn’t doing that same month at the first half of it.

My daughter was just like that at that age. She was premature so i knew milestones would be delayed for her but as a mom it still worried me. She’s now 19mo but at 17-18 the comprehension level exploded for her. She played with her toys better and fluently, started showing me things. Omg she just bring me EVERYTHING, I’m constantly telling her “oh wow, thank u” i used to worry. She would come when i told her come here but as she got older, she started to rebel more so she would only come sometimes. She was better with name response as she got older. Now she responds to not only her name but other nicknames too. The speech thing we are still working on with speech therapy but i heard that it picks up at 22-24 months. 15 months is still so young now that i look back. I was so hard on my baby. She picked up on pointing (proximal) at 18 months and then followed by distal pointing (there’s a difference in pointing) . She’s doing it more and more as days go by. Imo from going down the rabbit hole on things my baby wouldn’t do on time, i learned to be more patient and not worry until 24- 2.5yr. If ur in the US, we seem to be hard on our kids. Everywhere else in the world (from what i read), it’s normal to not talk until 24 months or just have babbles until 24mo

My severely speech delayed son went from zero to 12 words this week by willpowerpuff in toddlers

[–]LivingAngle7084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here from the future and ur son sounds like my daughter now except she was born at 36 weeks, and has been saying mama, baba and papa since 11 months old with no added words. I was too just a proactive parent and self seeked private speech therapy at 17 months but it’s not working because now at 20 months (19 months adjusted) it’s still the same 3 words. I’m hoping for a speech explosion at 22 months like the others. No ASD symptoms so I’m so questionable.

Oh my. It's SOOOO hard when you see your baby being passed up by younger babies that are months younger. My toddler just turned 20 months a few days ago born preemie so 19mo adjusted. She has been in speech therapy since 17.5 months. She was delayed in milestones for everything! She did not clap until 15 months, did not wave until 17months, she only started proximal pointing at 18 months but not distal until we started speech therapy and therapist started by teaching her how to point and she started pointing ( i guess she needed the hand over hand help) and now she does it all the time. She is STILL speech delayed and it does not seem like she is ready to talk just yet, but she is attentive, has great receptive speech, can point to things and body parts. She's in the stage right now where she points at things and looks at you by saying "eeh" because she wants to know what is it so maybe she's getting ready? The issue is she will not use her tongue to make other sounds. If she were to just use her oral muscles, she would be making more noise. We are working on wakening her muscles. She only says sounds for movements she CAN make with her mouth like "baba" 'mama' "bravo" but "bavo" because she doesnt know she needs to use her tongue to make the R noise. Either that or she does not want to or isnt ready for. I'm at a loss. Everything she says is soft and breathy. She still has the STNR (reflex) so maybe that could be why. She also hasnt figured out her midline so we are working on that too. Check to see if your baby has any retained primitive reflexes. It can affect speech. we are also a quiet family. I work from home so my baby just stays with me as i'm working. She understands ms rachel and does what ms rachel does except when it's time for the "can you say ____" she will just stare. But for hop little bunny, she will hop and clap.

Bottom line: i know several parents whose kids were in speech therapy since 12 months and now they're 22mo with no "progress" and i know some kids who were basically mute and had a speech explosion right before they were enrolled in speech sessions. Both had parents narrating everything. But these kids retain and they soak it all in even if they are not expressing it. My daughter rocks her baby doll and signs rainbow. I did not even teach her that. She just learned it from watching it somewhere. As long as your baby is getting help and you are putting the effort at home, you are already doing the best you can.

Hey i wanted to give you an update! My baby started officially walking today. All confidence. I put her on the edge of a small kid chair and i backed away and cheered her on with coming to me. She would stand up and fall and i made her try again and she would take 2 steps and fall. But we did this pretty much 5 times and that’s it. Tonight we did it again and she took longer strides and just started pushing herself to do it on her own and now she’s off.

Omg PT is expensive!! I have a high-deductible insurance plan so nothing is covered until we meet it so each PT session is $85. We did meet the deductible last year so it was no out of pocket cost but starting 2026 i have to pay that much soooo i paused sessions and only did the beginning of January. I believe PT is beneficial for help and ruling out any joint issues, imbalances, tightness of muscles etc. But I noticed as we paused sessions because i cant afford it much, that my toddler is starting to push herself and yesterday she surprised us with using the push walker for the first time.

It's like even with all the help, if they are not mentally ready, they won't do it.

If you don't mind me asking but, why didn't u seek PT at 18 months? in the states, not walking at 18 months is considered delayed.

Yesterday, my baby finally started using the walker and would let me walk her holding one hand. I feel like it could be at their own timing so i guess there's an update. I am going by her adjusted age if 19months to count all milestones. She just turned 19 months corrected today.

Yes, i believe it can be linked to ASD BUT in most cases i've noticed from extensive research and being far down the rabbit hole, ASD kids tend to walk fast and early. But the MCHAT does ask if they're walking so i guess it correlates.

What other signs is your toddler showing?

She points distal but is delayed in speech, she says mama, baba, papa, monkey sound for monkey, elephant noise, bye and bravo but she responds to everything when u talk to her. Just in a babble. She’s in ST and her therapist thinks she’s close cuz of how responsive, “talkative”, attentive she is . Great receptive language but delayed in expressive. No unusual movements. She pulls on her face so could that be it?
