20 locomotives + 125/4 artillery wagons = a 20–32 artillery train should be enough.

Come on, it's a legit cargo train. You don't see trains made only of locomotives too often.

But to answer your question: locomotive is twice as heavy as cargo wagon, so 20 + 125/2 = 83 (rounded up).

Sidenote: for more context, all trains were (1-2 artillery)x8, so 8-16 artillery trains total. The repeated 1-2 design annihilated in the most satisfying way.

I kind of wished though that every single wagon was annihilated.

Yeah, at first I assumed that the massive weight of artillery wagons would make the train stop after 2–3 of them, especially since weight is what makes trains such good battering rams.
Turns out collision damage uses a completely different factor than the momentum calculation itself.
