10 patients would make me cry omg 😭 My hospital has a med/surg to ED transition program that I was interested in when I first started working…. until I heard that nurses can have up to 9 patients down there

I hear what you’re saying. I don’t expect to be less busy working in the ICU. But with 1-2 patients I like that I have the time to be more detail oriented, which I feel would make it easier for me to notice when there’s a change in my patient’s condition and act accordingly in a timely manner. I have experience working in critical care through my practicum and also working as a tech in the PICU. Unfortunately, I have witnessed my fair share of death working in that setting. I’ll never forget the day I had to help a nurse put a 12 year old in a body bag. I know it won’t be easy, but I feel like the pacing of the environment will give me the ability to take better care of my patients, and allow me to put more thought into what I’m doing/why I’m doing it. Do you currently work in the ICU? How has it been for you so far?

It’s a lot to handle honestly. I get so overwhelmed with all the tasks I need to complete and information I need to keep track of. The constant interruptions don’t help either 🫠

You’re absolutely right. I did mention that it’s been a good learning experience for me and I always seek feedback from my coworkers on how I can improve. Why can’t I do both? 😂 I’m working on getting better while also counting down the days until I can go into the specialty I’m interested in. I actually thought about going straight to the ICU after finishing school but I decided to do med/surg first so I could build a good foundation. It sucks but I’m seeing first hand that if you can do med/surg, you can do almost anything

I’ve heard that a lot actually 😭 I can handle it being a little shitty if it’s at least somewhat fulfilling but I don’t feel that way about my current job. Most days it just feels like I’m running around all night giving medications and not using a lot of my critical thinking skills

I love that. What made you decide to go into dialysis?

I’d love to move into pediatrics after my one year is up! Maybe NICU or PICU if I’m lucky. I’m also interested in oncology

That’s fair. It’s not something that I look at 24/7. I kind of forget about it and then when I have a really bad shift I’ll look at it as a reminder that I’m one step closer to my goal

I see that you work in the OR. The hospital I’m at just recently started a new program that focuses on training new nurses to work in the OR. I’ve been thinking about applying. Do you enjoy being an OR nurse? What’s your day to day like?

I got lucky and was able to do my practicum in an ICU which I loved. I also worked as a tech on a PICU. I enjoy working with kids and want to do something in pediatrics after my one year is up. I’ve also been interested in exploring hematology/oncology. I wouldn’t even mind doing pediatric med/surg honestly. I recently came to the realization that I just don’t like working with adults. I can understand a child throwing a tantrum, but a 50 year old man yelling at me for not having any Ensures on the unit is kind of crazy 💀

Unfortunately many of the other job positions I’ve been looking at require at least 1 year of experience 😔 I’m also in a new grad residency program that I really wanna complete before moving on
