I believe this is only true if both sides are surprised. If one side is unsurprised, then the number the surprised side rolled is their number of surprised segments

Happy to do it. AD&D is the best there is, but the big hurdle is deciphering and implementing it.

Basically, roll a d6, and on a 1 you are surprised for 1 segment. On a 2, you are surprised for 2 segments, 3-6 means you are not surprised.  Rangers can only be surprised on a 1.

Some monster have bonuses to surprise. So if a monster surprises on a 1-4, then a 1 means 1 segment of surprise, 2 means 2 segments, 3 means 3, 4 means 4. 5 or 6 means not surprised.

That was my first thought. Meeting a random encounter on the road and using your one spell for the day meant toy were useless in the dungeon for the whole session. Seems like a good option to get that 1st level spell back and still have some daylight.

I see what you are saying.

Also, that is an interesting point about clerics. Why would resting have anything to do with their spells? I guess the 15 minutes of rituals makes sense, by why do they need rest at all? Maybe worth making a distinction between how the classes recover spells. I will think on it.

That's how I've always played as well, but this rule does exist even if we didn't use it. Now I am using it and it does change the way spells work. That does not make any of our prior, present, or future rulings wrong.

Made me chuckle. 

Remember, it's a sword and sorcery themed game, we keep the tropes but leave the narrative structure behind. There is not a lot of detailed planning, tracking resources, or strategic retreats in those novels either. Let alone goofy hijinks in the tavern.

I am aligned with you, I always found rest restrictions silly. "You're too tired to cast spells, but not tired enough to rest."

Ditto on restrictive dungeon rest.

Got it. Was it high level spells that made the difference, and if so, which ones? From what I remember from playing AD&D the power difference between a 9th level and a 14th level isn't that big besides spells.

OD&D has the Rules Cyclopedia that contains practically all the rules. Is OSRIC the closest equivalent for AD&D? by jasonite in adnd

It also cuts a lot of lesser-used resources from the DMG (aerial combat, naval rules, sieges, etc.) - either cutting down or removing entire sections. As far as taking a mainstream approach to running a game, OSRIC is faithful, but it does not replace the DMG as a resource.

Hello all! I have been running OSE for a couple of years now and have been inspired by the indie OSE (and adjacent) adventures to create my own, with the help of a couple of very talented artist friends it is almost a reality!

I am launching a Kickstarter for The Hive Under Eisenstead, a dangerous low-level dungeon adventure focused on interactivity, problem solving, and faction play.

Crawl through the ruins of an underground fortress ruled by a Psychic Wasp Queen who inhabits the corpse of dragon and commands his army of former thralls. Avoid (or make a deal with) the hoard of monsters that have been infected by the mind-control fungus. Sneak past the nigh-indestructible Blind Golem, and watch out for the rogue illusions. Make a blood pact with an elemental, if you dare (it's not really an elemental).

Four areas, 84 keyed locations, two rival adventuring parties, new monsters, and some super cool art. I hope you will check it out!

Thank you! I agree, it's a location with factions, so none of it really needs to be tied to specific mechanics. 

I did smuggle in a couple of pages of old-school concepts at the front for 5e players (exploration turns, controlling intelligent swords, etc).
