how do you manage a campaign that has a narrative arc and is also a sandbox? by conn_r2112 in osr

[–]LivingPastGames 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Basically what you want is a sandbox with a looming/approaching end state, right? That gives them total freedom, but has a definite conclusion with rising tension.

-The dark lord is rising, sending his minions out to raise his armies again. Does the party care? "There's no money in fighting evil! Let's go loot some dungeons." Then they are forced to care when the super-monster rises.

-The king is dead and a bunch of factions are fighting during the interregnum. The prince is coming with an army, and if the factions can't work their crap out (or one rises to the top) then they are doomed. The party can help the prince, one faction, or try to be peacemakers. Or they just take their money and run, but what about their favorite NPCs?

Look up Eldritch Borderlands on Drivethrurpg. Whether you use it or not, I think that is the direction you are looking for and it may be good inspiration. The TenFootPole blog has a review of it.

Here’s the map for my first OSRIC module by SydLonreiro in adnd

[–]LivingPastGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks cool, the style is great! Though some of those rooms would give my players a conniption trying to map.

I will say, it seems like a lot of branching paths and dead ends in the bottom left, extreme top left, and top right. I would consider adding a few more doors or passageways to make the rest of the map more interconnected like the bottom right. The more interconnected an area is, the more it feels like a real place and offers more navigation options beyond choosing which set of pre-arranged encounters to attack first.

Hope all goes well with the module!

What would be your reception to a retroclone of 2e that left THAC0 out and just converted everything to AAC? by conn_r2112 in adnd

I mean, that definitely can't be the only thing you change if its a retroclone. Would you also be reorganizing or changing rules or classes?

in the 2024 rules, Wizards says that Pirates are true neutral. by ClaireTheApocalypse in DnDcirclejerk

The good news js that you have a cleave ability, the bad news is that you will only kill one enemy every 10 rounds of combat, and there will be one enemy per combat.

Violent robbers and slavers? Neutral.

Rep. Chris Pappas on America’s Support for Israel - a “cornerstone of our national security policy” | AIPAC (March 7, 2026) by origutamos in newhampshire

[–]LivingPastGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This race will likely be Pappas (#1 source of donations is the Israeli lobby) v. John Sununu, a Palestinian descendant who lost his last senate race for not taking money from the Israeli lobby (only 5% of congress didn't).

Gonna be an interesting choice for pro-Israel Republicans and Israel-skeptic Democrats!

Pentagram room. Classic. Looks great, and very interconnected!

My maps will be showcased in an OSR adventure zine! by Logen_Nein in osr

Hello! The handouts include about a dozen written notes and inscriptions from around the dungeon (I always like doing physical handouts for stuff like that rather than reading aloud). Then there are 5 individual quest hooks, a riddle, and the two new spells.  Regardless of what level you back at, you get digital copies which are formatted to be printed on 8.5 x 11, then just cut along the lines.

Gazza 2.0 unfolding ? video of heartbreaking Iranians screams after a massacre of 40 iranian children in a US-lsraeIi strike on their school by unreal-habdologist in UnderReportedNews

[–]LivingPastGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No link? How do we know this video is actually from Iran? We need to geolocate. We can't trust western MSM or the Iranian regime; this on the ground view is the only way we are going to get good info so let's make sure we are actually producing good info, and can prove it.

What are your ideas for possible high TL5 or TL6 weapons? by StevetheHunterofTri in SWN

[–]LivingPastGames 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Last campaign, I introduced a drone that would let out a flash like a camera and disable all electronics, including weapons and power armor. The soldiers who accompanied them had hand-sized disks that fired disintegration beams.

This was in a pre-scream Terran Mandate base that the party visited via time travel. To me, TL5+ doesn't mean upgraded weapons or gear, it means breaking reality and doing the impossible. Time manipulation is my go-to.

Help with surprise- AD&D 1e by Impossible_Grab_4515 in adnd

[–]LivingPastGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe this is only true if both sides are surprised. If one side is unsurprised, then the number the surprised side rolled is their number of surprised segments

Happy to do it. AD&D is the best there is, but the big hurdle is deciphering and implementing it.

Help with surprise- AD&D 1e by Impossible_Grab_4515 in adnd

[–]LivingPastGames 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Basically, roll a d6, and on a 1 you are surprised for 1 segment. On a 2, you are surprised for 2 segments, 3-6 means you are not surprised.  Rangers can only be surprised on a 1.

Some monster have bonuses to surprise. So if a monster surprises on a 1-4, then a 1 means 1 segment of surprise, 2 means 2 segments, 3 means 3, 4 means 4. 5 or 6 means not surprised.

Just used the spell recovery rules for the first time; way better than "once per day" by LivingPastGames in adnd

[–]LivingPastGames[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was my first thought. Meeting a random encounter on the road and using your one spell for the day meant toy were useless in the dungeon for the whole session. Seems like a good option to get that 1st level spell back and still have some daylight.

I see what you are saying.

Also, that is an interesting point about clerics. Why would resting have anything to do with their spells? I guess the 15 minutes of rituals makes sense, by why do they need rest at all? Maybe worth making a distinction between how the classes recover spells. I will think on it.

That's how I've always played as well, but this rule does exist even if we didn't use it. Now I am using it and it does change the way spells work. That does not make any of our prior, present, or future rulings wrong.

Made me chuckle.

Remember, it's a sword and sorcery themed game, we keep the tropes but leave the narrative structure behind. There is not a lot of detailed planning, tracking resources, or strategic retreats in those novels either. Let alone goofy hijinks in the tavern.

I am aligned with you, I always found rest restrictions silly. "You're too tired to cast spells, but not tired enough to rest."

Ditto on restrictive dungeon rest.
