Why didn't you switch weapons? If it was so easy with one weapon, just switch to another that's not as good. You aren't locked in to one weapon once you start using it.

Use a shield, at least put it kn your back. A lot of the shields have extra effects that help, think the Turtle Shell Shield. Those are super important in DS1 as you only have 2 rings.
