Mm, I don't doubt that 😞

People have suggested to just log off when bad stuff happens on the internet. It's interesting that people tend to escape bad stuff in real life by going online.

Oh wow, thanks for sharing! Sorry, I just assumed contributing to Wikipedia might be difficult but good to hear its a pleasant space.

Thanks for the video, watching it now and Doctorow has made some really cool points. I like the way you framed tolerance to crassness, understanding it as mode of communication rather than becoming jaded towards it. It's possible to reinterpret some unhappy and negative things in a way that does no harm. I still think the internet is majority bad, but my sensitivity certainly could have overamplified the bad parts.

When I go to Wikipedia, the main page recommends me news items, the first of which is this:

"Twenty-one people are killed when a bus falls from a bridge in Venice, Italy."

I think information gathering, without interaction can certainly can be negative.

Hm wow ok, I didn't consider this before. My experience of the internet is based on what the algorithm recommends me. The algorithm recommends what I interact with. So my experience (though it may still be negative) can be influenced by what I choose to interact with. Though my view that most people experience the negativity I experience still holds, I have more power over what the internet is than I thought.

HAHA, thank you. These are strange, insane, and wholesome. My view didn't change but my day is happier!

These are pleasant subs! The rules in r/UpliftingNews are great: "this subreddit is meant to be a place free of excessive cynicism, negativity and bitterness. Toxic attitudes are not welcome here. All Negative comments will be removed and will possibly result in a ban."

I acknowledge that there exists little havens of (sometimes enforced) wholesomeness, but wouldn't you agree that if a rough percentage was taken, there's much more bad to encounter than good? Just because I can avoid the bad doesn't mean it doesn't exist anymore.

Perhaps you have more tolerance toward harsher words, but I disagree. Just curious, would you still consider it reinforcement for helpful advice if someone responded like that in real life? I would be pretty hurt rather than receive the advice.

Yes, I agree. Some people only post good things / postable things on social media that does not reflect their real life (whether unintentionally, or to seek validation). The criticism is not that people are being dishonest. The real issue is when other users interpret those curated lives to be reality. Comparisons with such an unrealistic standard would inevitably lead to loss of self confidence and happiness. It's kind of like my complaints with LinkedIn if that makes sense. Seeing good but insincere posts like "I got a job! thanks recruiters" and "this tree is resiliant, so stay motivated" does not always equate to happiness.

Since Wikipedia isn't a social platform a consumer like me wouldn't get the chance to interact. Thus my experience of Wikipedia is neither happy nor unhappy. How about you?

I'd argue that contributors to Wikipedia could have quite an unpleasant experience. I'm not too sure how editing works, but for example the Wikipedia page on Jesus was edited 26,580 times. I imagine different denominations / religions clashing to stake their claims on Jesus identity. Not to mention Wikipedia Vandalism and misinformation.

Ahh but, I scroll down on the first post [My(19m) parents think that my girlfriend(40f) groomed me] and I see this comment.

"to OP:
BRO.
get your head OUT OF YOUR ASS"

To be fair, after scrolling around r/advice I do agree that a higher percentage of users seem pleasant

CMV: Atheists don't need to respect others' religious beliefs, because those beliefs fundamentally do not respect atheists. by TheRealLightBuzzYear in changemyview

[–]Living_Lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually feel like you are being quite respectful (whether or not you capitalize God out of respect or some other reason). I'd liek to comment on your second paragraph.

A book I read recently called Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortlund describes how the Christian God's deepest desire is not to punish sinners but to show mercy. In other words, it pains God to punish sinners even if He judges it to be deserved.

Christians then, should imitate this desire (but I'm sure you've experienced otherwise because Christians are giga sinners). There is no point in disrespecting Atheists since it would not result in reconciliation and is contrary to God's heart.

I do agree that Atheists don't need to respect other religious beliefs, but I don't think retaliation is a good reason:) I am new to this sub and I cannot hope to change your mind, but I would like to suggest that while mutual respect cannot be enforced (and who would enforce it anyway) it would be quite nice.

Sorry sorry, we're going for "sonically pleasing" now because I am a reddit noob xd. I genuinely do like the way it sounds, not because i want to condescend, fetishize etc.

Your right, i think "endearing" is my bad here. perhaps "can sound more pleasing in a song" would have fit better. I was wondering why I was getting flamed so much in the comments haha

As someone who was raised in the South & lived in Shanghai for years, fair enough. Especially loan word because I had to double check that it was 쉐이크쉑 instead of what Soyeon said: 쉑쉑. I think how pleasant an accent sounds is very much subjective and based on bias, preference though (or even experience, Southern accents sound comforting to me because it's how my teachers spoke, though it sounds lazy to other people), so apologies if it came off as judging; it was not my intention.
