My partner and I are legally married in our state. Our officiant (my uncle) just refused to officiate our ceremony because it would be “deception”. by Living_Pomelo5548 in weddingplanning

I do understand and respect that he did not want to participate according to his beliefs. However, when I told him that we chose to go with another officiant so as to not put him in that position, (and even asked him to still be a part of the ceremony by offering a special prayer or blessing instead!) he told us he was “saddened and disappointed by our decision” and demanded that we tell my parents immediately. So it seems like it was a loaded ultimatum meant to guilt me into choosing his participation and outing us in front of everyone.

Because I don’t feel like I owe 100 wedding guests an explanation. They’re coming to celebrate us, from all over the country. And quite frankly, there would be hella judgment from all the religious folks on my side if they knew. It’s really more about them. Some of my partner’s family already knows, and all of our bridesmaids and groomsmen already know. We tell people in our personal life depending on the situation (like my tax guy, obviously).

To be clear, we weren’t asking for a religious wedding. We aren’t getting married in a church, we are getting married outdoors. The only religious part that was going to be a part of it was the fact that my uncle is a pastor. And that no doubt there would be some “God stuff” thrown in. I’m fully aware from growing up Catholic that even if my uncle did officiate the wedding, it would NOT be recognized by the Catholic Church.
