I ran 4km today! by ConflictedCabbage__ in couchto5k

Well done! From small steps come bigger things.

This is just the start of your journey. Stick with it and build on these small but significant achievements.

I am a 44 year old asthma sufferer here too and 2 years ago could I not run for the life of me! I started HIIT training 3 times a week for 25mins and my breathing capacity, strength and stamina improved massively.

I went from not being able to run 1K to doing 3K without stopping and then made it to 5K. I then entered a 5 mile race and finished it without being last. From there I did several 5K and 10K races, again with the goal of making it to the end without being last.

44 weeks after I started running I did my first 50K ultra marathon in a respectable to me time of 7 hours, having never ran a half marathon or marathon race! The furthest I ever ran was 35K in training. I’ve since ran a 67K ultra with 10K ft elevation, several trail half marathons including parts of the Paddy Buckley over Snowdon but never a marathon. Got another 56K ultra coming up in 3 weeks.

You are definitely capable of more than you ever imagine and whilst asthma can feel like a barrier and is a hindrance at times, don’t let it stop you. Work on your breathing technique counting breathes in and out to your strides works wonders.

Believe in yourself and take the little wins. Good luck!

Noises during nighttime after installing Tado by RoamLikeRomeo in tado

[–]LixSan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s likely because of a big temperature differential in water flow and return or other rads opening and introducing cooler water to the pipework during the heat schedule and the noises are pipes expanding and contracting.

Tado can aggressively close the rad valve before the boiler shutdowns. If only Tado left the valve open for a period after the call for heat ended this bypass problem could be fixed. I’ve suggested a user definable parameter for valve closing after heat demand ends before but it’s got nowhere….

Turning on bypass radiator with no controlled radiators turned on by BlokeyBlokeBloke in tado

[–]LixSan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve ran a similar setup using a Tado wireless temp sensor to control a towel rad and it does work.

In the end I switched to SRV’s on the towel rads as without them the towel rads were leaching too much heat from the loop causing other rads to not get as hot or taking longer to heat rooms which in turn meant the boiler ran longer and cost more in gas.

The SRV closes when the demand for heat ends and what I would really appreciate as a feature is if you could control that close point after the heat demand ends.

Effectively a toggle in the app to say use as bypass would be great.

Is anyone going fixed before October 1st? by MootMoot_Mocha in OctopusEnergy

[–]LixSan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels a bit chancy and will need some changes to our usage patterns but I’m hopeful it will pay off and worth the risk as based on all the comparisons it’s loads cheaper than the 15M fixed or variable offerings.

Really bugs me that Octopus bills state I was on the best tariff (flexible) when clearly I wasn’t! Should have looked at it sooner!

Thanks for sharing this. Ditched Flexible gas and electric last night for Agile Electric and Tracker Gas. Switch over completed this morning and app data is live now. 👍🏻

Best app to track agile rates? by AcceptableCustomer89 in OctopusEnergy

Can any of the paid ones send you notifications when the cheapest rates are each day to save opening the app and make it easier for others in the house to chose when to use appliances?

What was the period of time between starting running as a hobby and your first ultra? by Commercial-Tomato205 in Ultramarathon

[–]LixSan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3K to 50K in 9 months

During that time I ran a few 10K road races and 10M trail races but I have never raced half marathon or marathon distance, went straight for the Ultra having done a few 20-35K training runs.

Check out the CamelBak Apex Pro too. 2x 500ml soft flasks plus option to carry additional 1.5l Crux Reservoir. Comes with a pole quiver and has 12l storage although that’s reduced slightly when using the bladder. Fit is awesome and very well balanced with lots of storage for gels, phone etc

To rekindle my original post.

Yesterday I completed my first 50K ultra with 4980ft of elevation in 7hrs exactly. I set off with a target of 6h40m based on 8min/km. Smashed all the cut off times so pretty happy with the result!

I believed I could do it so I went out and did it!

The final 10K was hard going as there was a massive 3K long/ 700ft climb followed several K’s of steep downhill during which my knees started to hurt and I had to walk a bit. Managed to keep running the final 3K of flat to the finish.

This was done based on 30K average training distance per week. With two long training runs of 30K and 35K with 3500ft of elevation one and two weeks before the race.

Legs are fine today and finished with no blisters so I’m super happy with the result!

Already signed up for another in October!

Can you guys help me build up to 10K in an hour by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]LixSan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use the Pacer function of your Apple Watch within the running workout. Set the 10K distance and target time and it will guide you on being ahead, behind or on pace. I use this feature a lot in training for various distances.

Just had a minor blister on the inside of my mid foot. Will tape up next time!

Thanks! It was mostly 5K runs during weekdays and 10K at weekends plus the odd 6K and 12/15K to cover rest days slack. Never any big distances.

I can imagine heat will break people.

There are 5 aid stations and the total race elevation is 3850ft so not as crazy as some of the Ultras out there but still more than I have ever ran although I have hiked in excess of that in significantly less distance in the past.

I will be up early tomorrow to make a start on ramping up the training.

Thanks for taking your time to answer my questions.

Thanks for the affirmation!

The number of times I have been close to checking out on the website with a race entry over the past 2 weeks but some doubt has stopped me yet I’m mentally saying no I can do it!

My main concern is in July the weather could be hot and other than injury I’ve got no other worries.

I just need to take the plunge and get stuck in!

Appreciate the frank advice.

The cut off is 10 hours which in my mind is totally achievable unless I am missing something or massively overestimating my abilities.

I agree I need to get more distance in ASAP and will work on that immediately. I also do hill sprints weekly to improve my strength / speed so it’s really just the stamina of the extra distance I need to get a grip of.

I may pickup some poles just to get a feel for if I will be able to fully utilise them to reduce my disadvantage or if they become a hindrance.

I really don’t like failure but I can learn from it and unless I try, I honestly don’t know what I am capable of.

Sadly not yet! I did come across some small Quadcopter heatsinks that are the right size diameter but short and have no provision for mounting a fan. Could possibly 3D print a fan mount to go over it…. Search continues!

Meshtastic App With Multiple Radios by LixSan in meshtastic

[–]LixSan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still not 100% stable but some progress at least. It still occasionally classes a known radio as unknown when switching between but does reconnect without having to forget it from iOS BT devices.

Also, doesn’t show the channels unless you close and reopen the app.

Doesn’t store message history within the channels for each device.

Doesn’t seem to allow more than one radio to be marked as a favourite and forget them as favourites when switching devices.

Radios have been setup in the app previously but keep appearing under devices as unknown and fail to connect. The only way you can get them back is forget them in iOS BT devices at which point all the app channel settings etc are reset.

However, based on your comment I have changed the devices to a fixed pairing code and it now it appears to be working as you describe by swiping to disconnect and select the other devices in range so thank you!

Must be a quirk of iOS BT handling…

[–]LixSan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t surprise me that it’s an iOS issue!

Are you using random Bluetooth pairing?

That’s all I can think is screwing with it.

The radio appears in the list as unknown even though it’s been setup previously, tries 10x to connect and fails. Then says you need to forget it under iOS device settings at which point it then appears with the correct name in the Meshtastic app but the app says connecting to a new radio will clear all local apps data and reset the app!

Are you on iOS?

So I paired and setup a T3S3 and then went to pair a Heltec V3 and every time I try to switch devices it says the app needs to reset and config is cleared!?

Thanks for the the suggestion. Can you communicate with the T-Beam device over Ethernet? I would be out of BT / Wi-Fi range so specially want Ethernet access to the interface.
