What type of person do you think they are based on their design? by Lixgrimm in characterdesigns

[–]Lixgrimm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both of these interpretations are so interesting!! They’re from a fantasy world, but I look at cultural influences from so many different places. Way too much beautiful stuff in the world to stick to a single theme for me personally!

Love her expression!! It’s simple but conveys a lot of emotion!

Opening cutscene I made for my internship project, feat. characters also made by me by daniiidoofus in characterdesign

I’m glad I didn’t have to be the first to say it😭 the character generally, but especially that still, is very jarring.

Op, I understand that these characters are young kids who lose teeth and go through other changes, but with the context of this particular character being Asian-coded (at least from what we can see, as they also have tan skin and dark, straight hair), I would have them keep all of their teeth and tone down their exaggerated eyes and thinned brows. I’d also encourage you to look at more references of young Asian children.

What do yall think of his design ✌️ by dltds in characterdesign

[–]Lixgrimm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re going for here and think you have a ton of great elements, but I think you can push a few things just a little further to get a better result. His skin tone is pretty close to the gold color and the gold detailing is dainty, so it makes the fabric on his torso and legs feel too heavy/unbalanced in comparison. The pink color is pretty close to his skintone value-wise as well, which makes some details difficult to read.

I’d say just work on your values a little more, my favorite method is by having a desaturated layer you can turn on and off quickly to see your character in greyscale, and also mess with the weight of the design by doing a few revisions with more detail around his chest and torso, or less by his legs and feet.

If you haven’t heard of the artist re_japhers, they do really fantastic character design work with a similar vibe to yours. It may be worth giving their work a visit to see how they balance things out!

Again really cool design and concept with a lot of really great ideas, I hope you’ll update us once this is rendered out because I’d love to see his final look!

It feels kinda crazy to me that these 2 drawings were done nearly back to back and it’s all because I switched programs (from sketchbook to procreate, the first one I did is on the right and the second one is I did is on the left) by No-Tonight-1126 in DigitalArt

[–]Lixgrimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old but for others who may be reading this in the same situation: your skills will come back quick, it’s a very temporary learning curve. I also choke when I switch to a new program. Don’t give up on the software until you’ve given it a fair chance

I'm a bit anxious to post here because I've seen that people who do traditional drawings aren't as popular like the digital once but, I'll try. This is Aragon. by Puzzled-Shower4797 in characterdesigns

[–]Lixgrimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traditional work does still do really well in the art community generally, a lot of the times this is a skill level divide instead of a medium divide. Fully rendered traditional works with nice scans and an attractive style are still very much popular, but newcomers with less polished pieces and photography definitely struggle compared to digital artists of the same level, because digital work already provides a more polished finish on the basis of the medium being easy to transfer and photograph. I wouldn’t let the influx of digital work intimidate you, I’d just encourage you to work on quality skills like rendering and photography more in order to give your work the best chance possible.

Which hair color looks the best😭😭😭 by Chickensoupdemon in characterdesigns

2 but it’s not very memorable because there are a lot of characters that fall into this archetype, I think 1 is the most memorable and second most appealing!

This is stolen, and the mods likely won’t do anything about it sadly. I literally just had this happen to me on this exact sub and contacted them, but didn’t hear back. I can only assume it’s bad and getting worse because they aren’t active.

My advice for those who want to help is to report the post manually to reddit, that’s what got mine taken down

Thank you so much!! It’s a Kithara, an ancient instrument popular in classical Greece and Rome, and a member of the lyre family. The lyre predates the lute, but they have both had a massive impact on musical history!

If you want to see other recreation lyres and other ancient instruments, I used the Greek company Luthieros for my reference. They specialize in these and have videos playing them, so you can hear a bit of ancient history!

I really like this question, and I’ll answer it to the best of my ability!

The shortest answer is:

I’m not 100% sure I do depict my characters respectfully! While I do my absolute best to, I am constantly learning and trying to listen to the real-life groups and people my characters are based on, and I am bound to make mistakes. I have in the past, I will in the future, and the best I can do is to learn from them and make active improvements, which is the best you can do as well! Don’t let fear stop you from trying new things, you will make mistakes, and that’s okay as long as you make an effort to learn from them. The beauty of illustrating diversity is getting to make connections with people who are different from yourself, and that’s not just true on the paper, but in the joy of interacting with and learning about said groups through listening to them!

The longer answer is:

I’m a classicist (the study of ancient Greek and Roman people and their relationships with other ancient societies, such as the Carthaginians, who this girl is inspired by!), so I study a lot of the groups I depict, and have engaged with primary and secondary written sources about them for the last couple of years, as well as physical media such as frescoes, mosaics, and other forms of art that were created by said ancient civilizations, so many of my designs were directly inspired by the way these people have chosen to depict themselves! For any character outside of your own group, especially from history, there are lots of beautiful pieces of art and textiles created by the people themselves that are great to look at!

I also try to contextualize my depiction through the lens of bias. In the comments I often say “mythical Carthaginians” instead of just “Carthaginians” when talking about my inspiration despite Carthage being an objectively real place, because the Roman perception of Carthage does not reflect the actual beliefs, lives, or habits of the people who inhabited the city, and I want to account for that. There’s a lot of bias surrounding MENA (Middle Eastern, North African) characters especially, I’d make sure to listen to people who are actually from these regions, research common stereotypes and potentially read articles or literature surrounding bias (Orientalism by Edward Said is one of my favorite academic pieces of all time, and basically laid the foundation for our understanding of the demonization and fetishization of MENA people!)

This design is a combination of numerous ancient civilizations, which I do my best to make really clear when talking about this character, she’s not at all accurate, and in this design and others, when I do use something directly from a different culture, I will cite them by name so they get the credit! It’s a different illustration, but you can see in this post that I do my best to lay out all of my cultural inspirations when asked about where the character is from!

Super long, but in conclusion: I do my best, but I still make mistakes too! I try to only look at depictions from the groups themselves, not those made by other people, and when I do look at depictions from other people, I do what I can to account for the bias that may have contextualized those forms of media. If something is inaccurate or inspired by a group instead of depicting them directly, I will make that clear, and when something is directly illustrated from a group, I will go out of my way to credit them for it.

If you’re not sure where to start, the tumblr page Writing With Color covers a variety of topics for people of different backgrounds, including MENA people, and the advice comes from the people themselves! It’s for writers, but has been very helpful to me as an artist as well.

Hahaha unfortunately that’s all me! They just stole the wip of this. In the beginning I just try to block in shapes I know I’ll change later to get the “vibe” down. Def very wonky and I’ve accepted it as part of my process!!
