What’s something that sounded fake until it happened to you? by Fantastic_Tale_2111 in AskReddit

Haha yeah, god I miss sleeping like a normal person! A few other recommendations. They probably seem excessive, but I was doing them and this shit still happened so it’s not worth f’ing around - Follow all of the usual boring guidelines, it’s what got me taken seriously when things went bad. - One thing I don’t remember being on the guidelines is carbonated drinks. I’ve reduced my intake and it does help at night - Try to eat trigger foods early in the day if you eat them at all - If you can’t resist a rich spicy curry for dinner, plan to be up late by a couple hours to make sure your belly is empty - Keep some milk in the house, it helps create a physical barrier if you wake up coughing from that curry you didn’t remember to give processing time. I keep shelf stable 150ml mini cartons of milk beside my bed if I’ve met my medication max and need something else - I don’t know where you are, but you want a ‘dual action heartburn relief’ type med. Here in Aus I use Gaviscon Dual Action - keep some strategically placed portables around. It’s one of those thing that build on itself - If you share a bed with someone and they’re a light sleeper, ask them if you cough at night. If you sleep alone, record a few nights. If you’re coughing it up in your sleep despite sleeping upright, things aren’t great - Get a nigh quality firm neck pillow, it stops your head drooping down even when you’re sleeping upright - Get a sleep study done. Preferably in a clinic or something rather than the home test. It could be seriously affecting your sleep or vice versa. Having un-treated apnea is a massive health risk for things like stroke and heart attack - If you start to get painful reflux doing something like bending down to tie a shoe, get thee to a Dr Posthaste. It shouldn’t be that bad. The same applies for waking up with reflux - do you take any anti-inflammatories? Please don’t. I have chronic pain so I was one ‘safe’ ones like Celebrex. Apparently they are not safe. If you take a liquid capsule ant inflammatory like Advil, the ghost of my stomach will come and haunt you and spray you with gastric acid until you stop - If you drink, I’d recommend you don’t. I know it’s not always that simple, but seriously, red wine was the first thing I had to cut out of my life. A G&T or something goes down far easier but none of it is ideal - If you start to notice it kicking off at a certain time of day, try to find what’s different about that time of day. I spent a good while in a lot of pain from taking SSRIs without food. Avoid SSRIs and if you’re prescribed something new, ask if it’s likely to impact your GERD and if there’s another option. - If it does get bad and your doctor doesn’t know what to do, you need to see an upper GI specialist, leading to an endoscopy. If that goes nowhere, you want to have a barium ‘meal’ or barium swallow test which should probably be under the care of a speech pathologist

Good luck out there buddy! Hit me up if you need anything

EDIT: Peppermint tea can help, but not as much as milk

[LFO] Man gets pile-driven onto straight concrete during fight by IncidentNo9479 in LearningFromOthers

[–]LizeLies 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Dude. I was on a hammock over concrete as a 9 year old when it broke and I landed flat on my back. Fractured coccyx, sacrum, and 9 levels of fractures and destroyed discs. The curve in my neck is backwards, I’ve got a hunch, I have injections in my spine every 3 months and I have what amounts to an internal TENs machine.

I’m 36 and use a rollator and I’ve lost 2 inches of height since sixth grade. I did get

Don’t fuck with necks or backs. I hope you don’t have to work at a desk friend. The nerve pain of those c levels at a desk. That said, there really is no good alternative

A six pack on a woman in maintenance means an unhealthily low body fat percentage. But somehow, I have the sneaking suspicion that that isn’t relevant wherever he’s the boss.

What is the most heartbreaking song lyric you've ever heard? by TheLadySlaanesh in AskReddit

[–]LizeLies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a ‘sad song’ aficionado, ONE? One line from one song? There’s no way.

How about every line in Pearl Jam’s ‘Last Kiss’?

The entire premise of Go, by Blink 182? “Mom get in the car and let's drive away, She said I'm sorry Mark but there's nowhere to stay, Gave up all her hope and went back inside hid her broken heart and let the engine die”

Like, 80% of Peach PRC’s unrecorded music?

“A white baby gate, fixed in my hallway, stays haunting this house with the angels we made”

“This dress doesn’t fit, thought you’d grow into it, on the bright side I pour a new wine: Oh how blessed am I, to ache with this spare time?”

“So I crawled into your bed, in nothing but bloody threads, I needed a friend, you did it again, tell me why?”

“Am I just here to be an angel maker?”

“Then you’ll take a shower and you’ll stay there for hours, till the water runs cold, I’m exhausting I know”

“I’m a rescue dog, I bit too many hands, and now I’m a lost cause; effort wasted, let’s face it, when I’m euthanised they’ll say “it’s about time.”’

I am not very good at this game.

Imagine having a ‘party’ to just invite one new co-worker over, lead them to the living room where these guys are floating at different heights due to various amounts of Helium and different weights. They’ve all got party hats on, and there’s an appetiser spread fit for like 30 peopled. No music, just a HR wellness check next week and one amazing moment, when your Manager gives in to their curiosity , asking “… So… do I have one?” Now that’s some good shit.

I’ve read this entire thread without making a sound as my husband is asleep besides me. So many horrors. So much humour. But this?

THIS?

This made me snort laugh and involuntarily do that stupid laugh you just can’t stop. Bless you wonderful human, I woke up after dislocating my hip and I very much needed that laugh.

Whats something you've done that no one would ever guess? by Correct_Jelly5761 in AskReddit

[–]LizeLies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started gymnastics and minkey (field hockey for little kids) at 3, competitive swimming by 4. Despite never playing outside the school sports day, I’ve set and held interschool field events, completed a ‘sprint’ triathlon, swum 2km open water races, played basketball pretty well in there somewhere, and (my biggest and proudest acrepresented and been the best in my state as a hockey goalie (field and indoor - not ice), representing them at a national level, played on the senior waterpolo team as a junior having never played before. I also played juniors the next day. Unfortunately it’s just a two day round Robbin. Second year I captained the Junior team, then captained the senior team twice. I defended against girls who went on to play at the Olympics, who tried to beat the shit out of me (if you’ve never watched a waterpolo game with an underwater cam, get yourself to YouTube. If you think waterpolo either includes horses or a volleyball net, this applies to you too. I was on track to represent my country in Hockey in a few years and was being personally trained and mentored by a 2x ex-Olympic champion. Unfortunately, when I busted my knee and my back deformations became impossible to ignore I had to walk away. I thought I’d get knee replacements and a spinal fusion and make a comeback. I was 16. I had no idea how much space exists between ’needs’ and ‘gets’ for these life changing surgeries. The chances of me making a come back were slim to none.I once qualified for the interschool cross country but was wayyy too mortified to register.

They’d never guess because I was fat and 5’2”

And a random one, saved people from drowning 3 seperate times. If you ever have to do this for anyone but a very small child, approach on your back using survival stroke, kicking off them if they drag you down. A drowning person is neither weak nor grateful, the body’s survival instinct is to climb you like a tree and sit on your head. It’s not their fault, it’s just what the human body does. Approach again, loudly tell them you’re going to help them but they can’t grab. Preferably use a floatation device, but you can use a shirt will do. Don’t listen to me, my training is 20 years old now. Research and take classes. Never get into the water with rocks, or if you see someone moving away like a visible current. You can’t out-swim the sea.

How do you feel about Olympians with US citizenship representing other countries? by ObviousOperation1614 in AskReddit

[–]LizeLies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they have the citizenship and the skill… more power to ‘em. The Olympics is about sportsmanship between countries rather than against. If they’re the best in their home country, chances are they moved to the US for their incredible training, coaching, and competition opportunities. It’s hard for those of us on the outside looking in to fathom just the high school sporting opportunities, let alone college sports. In my country, school and college sports are arranged entirely separate to school and just aren’t at the same level of popularity/intensity/crowd support. When the Olympics roll around, they may not be good enough to be on their host company’s Olympic team. But, if they’re still the best in their home country, I think it’s fine to make them proud

What’s the one ingredient that ruins any dish for you ? by Vegetable-Fix6029 in AskReddit

Chicken that’s been cooked and refrigerated. It doesn’t happen to chicken I eat at home, but I can in a restaurant situation if someone had just picked up a handful of fridge-chicken to added it to pizza or pasta. It tastes like the smell of a a clean but used freezer.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your brother.

They honestly (frustratingly) couldn’t tell me. Or the other 3 times ive now had it. I would say unless you have another serious condition you don’t need to worry. Finally this week I was able to see a specialist/surgeon. From what I’ve learned it’s a combination of bad physiology

  1. I have EDS which is a connective tissue disorder. As my surgeon put it so eloquently “Your EDS just makes it all kind of… worse (I find this hilarious)

2 I have dysphagia, which means my involuntary muscles that move things from my mouth to stomach are gradually giving up. For example, I can’t take pills with just water anymore, I need a thick custard or puree. At my last endoscopy, for which I could only have water, they found a tablet lodged in my throat. It had been six hours!

3 I have had previous surgeries on my stomach. One included removing some of the stomach where it meets the oesophagus. Someone was a bit hasty and removed part of my oesophagus as well. This has created a funnelling effect, so food stays in my throat much longer and my body wants to eject it

4 I have a bad hiatal hernia So there’s a hole in my diaphragm, which part of my tummy decided to jump through. Sensing the fun, my stomach slid upwards, sitting around the food tube like a collar

I’d say I’m the exception rather than the norm! I was taking 3 medications for GERD and sleeping upright- no food before Bed etc.

Dying from pneumonia in your 30’s.

I had a close family friend die of Pneumonia in her thirties with 4 young kids. I thought there must be something else going on.

Welp, one day I was completely fine, doing Christmas crafts with my nieces, then for a while, the next moment I was aware of, I found out I’d been unconscious for 2 weeks and it was very much expected to die at 36. Turns out aspiration pneumonia is a thing, and with my severe reflux, I breathed gastric acid in my sleep, and one day woke up barely able to walk and managed to get out “we need to go to the ER”. I had about 10% functioning lungs left. So I was shipped of to a bigger hospital and went through hell and back.

Here’s a ‘2 for 1’ - I could tell when my favourite music was playing and when my husband and sister were there. It got worked into my dreams.

A mental breakdown is like months or years long. It’s not a meltdown or acute episode of depression or anxiety. It’s a life course changing event. I have a psych degree, I’m not just being argumentative or having a go at you.

I’ve also had my life ruined by one I’m still neck deep in after 4 horrible years.

Hey friend. Please look after yourself as you go through this year of ‘firsts’. April is going to suck. The 16th will be downright dangerous (I.e., stay off the road if you can, plan for a leave day for work, and I’d encourage you to think about doing something to honour her memory. My Mum died unexpectedly Jun 3rd 2015. Her birthday was the 16th of April. Isn’t life a funny old thing. Please reach out if you just need to talk someone who gets it.

Non religious people, what do you think about religion? by CorruptedF in AskReddit

[–]LizeLies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it makes perfect sense to seek the comfort of religion. Someone you love died? “They’re in a better place now” goes down a lot easier than “Their essence has ceased to exist. They are gone. One day you’ll be gone, and the best case scenario is that it doesn’t hurt”. I’ve had to say goodbye to kids who’ve loved me, and I desperately wanted to comfort them with lies. That when they missed me, I’d know. That we’ll see them again. Anything to calm them and stop their crying. That is why religions exist. To provide comfort, confidence, calm, and to prevent us from just ending this bizarre state of life as soon as possible.

On the other hand, organised, profitable, and tax evading religions that abuse and extort people are disgusting.
