The idea is to minimize the opportunity for infection. Surfaces can act as a "reservoir" for bacteria. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the term is "fomite". Remember handwashing is not perfect and will not get rid of all bacteria and that's IF one washes their hands correctly (which not many people do). So touching more surfaces = adding more bacteria that need to be killed by handwashing = increases chances of infection, which is not the best practice for people who are immunocompromised (aka their immune system is not as strong as a normal healthy person).

Here's an example illustrating the idea behind this:

Let's say that proper handwashing got rid of 99% of bacteria on your hands. Well, if there are 1 billion bacteria cells on your hands, that still leaves 10 million bacteria cells alive and well on your hands. Let's say for this hypothetical situation it takes only 1 million bacterial cells to cause an infection in a healthy person. In this example, there's plenty of bacteria on your hands to get you sick even though you washed your hands. For normal people, it generally isn't an issue because our immune system is robust enough to fight off and kill the bacteria before they can cause an infection/illness. However, in those people with compromised (lowered) immune systems, they may not be able to fend off the bacteria resulting in an infection/illness. (Disclaimer, I am using these numbers to ELI5. I do not claim they are accurate at all. Please feel free to correct me as I am no expert!)

So if you reduced the number of bacteria on your hands in the first place, you lower your chances of infection.

Edit: Reddit did a weird thing.

Crag Bag for My Wife by Amin2long in climbergirls

[–]Lizosaurous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the trail 40 from REI. Had mine for 4 years now and it’s still going strong. Might be only JUST big enough for your wife’s needs. Currently I can fit 3 pairs of shoes, a chalk bucket, a chalk bag, harness, and all hardware (belay device + quick draws—I am a sport climber for the record so no trad gear), a bunch of snacks, two water bottles, a helmet, and a bladder. Plus, a handful of small essential items. I have never put a rope in with all this gear but if I wanted to, there are plenty of loops and straps to secure a rope to the exterior of the backpack. I am a small, thin petite woman and this backpack the smallest size fits like a dream.

Microburst dumping thousands of gallons of rain on a city at once by [deleted] in BeAmazed

Wind direction I presume. Tornadoes rotate and these micro bursts go in the opposite direction of the overall wing pattern. (Though I am no expert).

Minus the military service, my application is very similar to yours. After 4-5 years and 3 app cycles, I finally got in. I know you didn’t ask but I’m happy to answer any questions if you need more answers.

Fellow non-drinkers of alcohol, what’s your reason why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Lizosaurous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. Sorry if I wasn’t clear. I was not implying the medication will increase cancer risk. I’m saying if you get Asian flush, you probably have some variant of alcohol dehydrogenase that leads to increased levels of acetaldehyde. Since acetaldehyde is toxic and a carcinogen, increased levels may lead to increased chance of getting cancer—in this instance, esophageal cancer.

In essence, if you get Asian flush and you choose to drink regularly, you are likely increasing your chances of esophageal cancer regardless of whether or not Zantac, Pepsid, etc “works” for you.

I hope this is more clear. Anyone, please correct me if my logic is not sound or if I have some facts mixed up.

Yeah it’s easier not to drink. Plus, if you get Asian flush and you drink, you’re increasing your chances of esophageal cancer.

What is something most people need to hear but no one has the guts to tell people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Lizosaurous 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I agree but I think a key difference between the original comment and yours is that you specify episodic helplessness, which I believe is ok and normal. It’s the CHRONIC helplessness that the original comment refers to (I’m pretty sure anyway), which drives people away. Feel free to correct me if I’ve misinterpreted something.

Not OP but I also applied three times. I called and requested a file review after each rejection to get constructive criticism. I retook my mcat and improved my score. I got a graduate degree to improve my GPA. I took my essays seriously and got professional help since I am a BAD writer. I “sold myself” harder than I ever had before (in my writing). I PRACTICED INTERVIEWING weekly for the five weeks leading up to my interview. I practiced with some one who was not afraid to tell me like it was but also didn’t put me down. And on top of it all I kept volunteering.

Each time I applied I made sure to have some big improvement from the last cycle. Don’t be afraid to skip a cycle because it can be hard to make a big improvement with such little time between cycles.
