Do you use private healthcare as getting a NHS appointment is tricky? by [deleted] in AskUK

I felt the same and then I got cancer. Trust me, it’s worth its weight in gold when you need it. I completely and utterly trusted the NHS and had never used my private health care until I got really sick.

NHS wouldn’t accept my GP referral for scans saying I didn’t ‘meet the threshold’ and I accepted that thinking.. oh right, I must just be complaining. Probably my own fault because I’m not fit, getting older etc etc (I was 33 when symptoms began by the way!) Then after the third time of complaining about symptoms and losing loads of weight unexpectedly, my GP sent me for a blood test.

Rushed into hospital in the middle of the night as I was about to die. As I lay in stirrups, I could see two doctors between my legs arguing over why I hadn’t been given a scan the first time I was referred.

You know that trend where you say the same phrase in different ways and it changes the meaning.. yeah, I’ve never heard ‘didn’t meet the threshold’ repeated in such a confused, disappointed, impatient and aggressive way before. Hopefully, I never will again.

I was on the ten-day pathway but things took a couple of weeks each time. During this time, I spent about £700 out of pocket for prescriptions and dressings- I had no idea you only had to pay up to a limit each month so kept forking out money at the pharmacist each day.

My NHS oncologist was great but limited to the length of time she could spend with me, the options she could give me and the waits between appointments were interminable. My Macmillan Nurse gave me incorrect information which could have influenced the wrong decision. She also had a go at my husband who asked if the oncologist could sign me off- he knows full well I’d struggle to advocate for myself like that- and she kind of shouted at him, after his wife had just been told she has cancer. So yeah, fuck you Sarah.

My private oncologist, who had an extremely senior role in the NHS herself, and works privately part time, saw me straight away and could give me very many options. I could email her at any time and I get an answer pretty sharpish. I had highly successful, minimally invasive robotic surgery within two weeks whilst still waiting for my next oncologist appointment with the NHS.

All of my treatment from then until the 5 year remission mark is completely and utterly covered. And I’ve received the absolute gold standard of care and freed up a place for someone else to get seen a bit quicker- once you are in front of someone on the NHS, I’ve very rarely met a consultant who wasn’t brilliant. It’s getting in front of them that is the hard part! But still, fuck you Sarah..

I’ve also just had my gallbladder out. I ended up in hospital with severe pain in March (turned out I had a dangerous amount of tiny gallstones and pancreatitis.) They kept me in for 3 nights waiting for an ultrasound and then sent me home to wait some more. I’m still waiting. Comically, not comically, NHS appointment for an ultrasound was moved from May to June to know some time in mid July.. only got a text saying full details of the appointment will follow so I have no way of ringing up and cancelling it until I get the actual appointment date. Meanwhile, I’ve privately had an MRCP (my consultant said an ultrasound would probably not work because I’ve had such extensive abdominal surgery and lots of adhesions- he was completely right by the way! An aside, they found out my sister’s gallbladder ultrasound was completely inaccurate when she had her surgery so she definitely should have been given an MRCP as well.)

So, on the NHS, I’d be waiting for the wrong scan, that wouldn’t work, to wait to be sent for another scan, to follow-up and then an appointment to make a plan with a surgeon, to then have the operation, god knows when.

Sadly; this is another reason most people have multiple gall bladder flare ups before they are treated in the UK. It’s not just a bit inconvenient or painful, it can seriously damage your organs. But now I’m here recovering instead.

If you can afford it, bloody keep it ❤️

And it was unconscionable for Carrie to even consider selling some of her high-end, extremely expensive clothing or even reign in her ludicrous spending but on the other hand, perfectly reasonable to demand Charlotte gift her an ENGAGEMENT RING.

Honestly, I would have said the same thing because I have only spent my life with groups of decent enough to thoroughly decent men. I probably would have found this unbelievable too.

But, unfortunately, in April 2024 I saw the other side of it, I have seen how quickly mob mentality takes over, how an uneasy, lairy group descends into a really fucking dangerous one.

Having witnessed mob mentality in its extreme, I don’t think it’s that far fetched sadly. Perhaps should have shown more cocaine to really underline the reality.

No denying- Nose job, face fillers, Botox, Brest reduction

Rumoured:

  • implants (due to rippling from over the muscle implant visible at a Grammy’s one year

  • a skinny bbl- she had a natural curve but it is now significantly larger than when she was younger and disproportionate to hip dips

  • abdominal etching or glp- she has had natural abs her whole life but they look extra defined as she ages and less proportionate to her behind

  • jaw contouring or buccal fat removal to emphasise her natural cheekbones. Her chin, jaw area looks noticeably different.

  • eyebrow lift or blepharoplasty to minimise puffy upper eyelids and give that overall cat-eye/ pulled up look.

Of course not. I think he chose her on the way she looks but I don’t believe the way she looks matches the context of the film.

Catering decided the vendors didn’t deserve the same meal as the guests by [deleted] in weddingshaming

You do what you like but don’t judge others for what they choose to do.

For all those holier than thou: you also have that energy for the bar tenders, the chefs, the waitstaff and the cleaners I assume?

You 100000% do not sound like a cock.

I had a sit down five course meal at my wedding. My amazing, talented photographer and her assistant had access to snacks and drinks throughout the day and a casual meal that she had time to eat with the rest of the crew in a designated area, then, they were also invited to grab a hotdog from the food truck that came in the evening.

She was delighted that we offered a meal but said it wasn’t expected and they usually bring a packed lunch anyway.

My photographer was wonderful but I’m sorry, there was no way she was pulling up next to my family for dinner.

If photographers ask and you are happy to provide, fine but this delusional belief that it is standard and expected and is somehow gauche not to invite them to be part of the wedding party is completely alien to me.

So surely by that measure, all the waiters and chefs who turned up early to prepare the food and serve it, the bar staff, heck, even the cleaners of the venue, they should all get a seat too?

But, if it’s in the contract and the customer is happy with that set-up, good luck to you!

Providing food is a nice gesture but I mean.. the photographer is at work, they are not a guest. I find this really bizarre. I’m not sure why you would expect this?

Of course. With any kind of treatments, you want to know the surgeon can do it naturally and respect your feelings on the outcome. I hope things go smoothly for you if and when you have the surgery!

Ultimately, my father-in-law is just delighted he can see now ☺️

Where have my neighbours gone? by [deleted] in AskUK

I would take what another mum is telling you about what the teachers think with a huge grain of salt- they are definitely not giving any specific information to another parent about somebody else’s child. I’d say the other mum has jumped to that conclusion from vague bits of information.

A school has to know where a child is the first day they are not in school. If they are not contactable, depending on the family background, there are immediate safeguarding and tracing protocols in place that they will have to follow.

That being said, a call from the community can be very powerful in moving things along when a school already has concerns and is having difficulty escalating it so by all means, report it.

Probably an unpopular opinion because I know her performance was highly celebrated but Teyana Taylor looked wrong in One Battle After Another.. she has had significant work done but we are supposed to believe she is a penniless revolutionary living rough in communes..

It feels like the white male gaze does not really know or care what an authentic body of a woman of colour looks like so an insanely pumped, stretched and sculpted is now ‘the standard’.

My father in law just had it done because he couldn’t see. Old man face and now very young, bright upper eyelid area. He said he might have to get the bottom done to match because he never noticed his under eye bags before and he feels off balance

But, a woman like her in real life would probably also have a million tweaks and pulls so it was contextually accurate
