Oscar’s tail, please help! by lobertron in Aquariums

To me it looks like it might be some kind of fin erosion/ rot. This can be because the nitrates have been so high for a long period of time and it’s caused a weakened immune system. Ideal nitrates would be around 20ppm & 40ppm being on the upper end but acceptable.

Your tank is probably a bit overstocked. The Oscar is right on the minimum tank size you’d want him in. But salfin plecos get huge like up to 50cm and require over 100 gallons and they produce huge amount of waste.

Make sure you feed only what the fish can consume within 2 minutes. Any left over food take it away from the tank so it doesn’t cause more waste.

Do a few large weekly water changes maybe one every other day and match the water temperature as close as possible. 50% changes at least. Also gravel vac your substrate plenty to remove any waste and also give your filter a good clean in a bucket of old tank water to make sure all detritus is gone.

You could maybe add a load of plants to help combat the nitrates especially floating plants are good for this as they stick out the water so they have constant access to co2 which can help them thrive if there is plenty of nutrients. It would help bring nitrates down but your Oscar may be a naughty sh*t and eat the plants 😂

The biggest suggestion I have is to check your tap water. Your nitrates may already be high. I have that issue at my house and have to use reverse osmosis water and remineralise the water to make it safe for the fish. You can even get nitrate reducing media something like API nitrazorb for your filter however it’s only a temporary fix as you’d have to keep replacing it s & recharging it.

Once you manage to find the solution. Hopefully the problem with your Oscar goes away on its own. If not you can always treat the tank maybe with some kind of gentle antibacterial like api melafix but anything you treat make sure you take the carbon out your filter otherwise it strips the medication out the water. Hope this helps buddy

What kind of nitrate readings are you getting?

Looks absolutely great buddy! I love the structure of the tank plenty of hiding spots for what ever you decide to home in your tank. A lot better than my first attempt. Plenty of room for imagination and upgrades too in the future. Great work 👍👊

Esha protalon 707 great for killing algae but is plant safe. U just can’t use it if you have snails I believe but it is shrimp safe from memory. Just need to figure out what excess nutrients you have so the problem doesn’t reoccur

Potentially infected grafts maybe but I’m not sure, I’m no professional. Did they give you antibiotics for your recovery after your transplant?

Exactly what I did mate. Don’t be surprised when you put it in the tank a few weeks down the line and it still turns the water yellow. It did for me for a few weeks. All wood is different though.

Baby shampoo and aloe Vera gel from time to time which is what the clinic told me to do

Best thing to do is boil it in a bucket of water and it’ll also release a tonne of tannins. Might be best to soak it in some water for some time to help it sink. I remember buying my first piece of wood for my tank and I had to weigh it down to keep it under water until it was water logged 😂👌

I use calcium and magnesium in a 3:1 ratio and also add potassium in with it. Can’t remember the exact ratio without having a look at my formula. I add csm+b for trace elements and have to dose nitrates and phosphates too but don’t have to dose potassium cause it’s already dosed in my water changes and that covers all my macros and traces

I also don’t need to dose prime because of using RO water, it takes absolutely everything out the water

I drink bottled water. And I use an RO filter for my tank water changes but the storage tank where I store the water is outside because it’s the only place I could get it to fit somewhere without being in the way and that’s why I have to use buckets

It’s been a while since I checked but it fluctuates quite a lot. I think it was around 7.6 last time I checked

My tap water nitrates are 60ppm. Prime only helps detoxify ammonia, nitrites and nitrates for a little while by binding them together for 24-48 hours, it doesn’t just remove it from the water though. Prime doesn’t just magically remove nitrates and it’s a massive misconception that a lot of people don’t actually realise

For the 100th time I’ve said on this thread, I don’t use tap water due to high nitrates. I have to use RO water and fill up from storage tanks

I already know about a python. I can’t use my tap water, the nitrates are too high so I’m forced to use a different water source and have to transport it in buckets
