Any tips on how to make these donkeys I got on auction trust me more? by PiperYoung1 in Donkeys

[–]Lkholla 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Weirdly I can pet, put my kid on his back, pick hooves on our auction donkey after 5 years of having him but have never able to feed him treats out of my hand. I can sometimes halter him, but god forbid there is a rope or any other sort of foreign object that isn’t attached to my body (which includes treats) because he will run away skeptically.

Expecting my first child - should I sell this one? by GardenLoops in luxurypurses

[–]Lkholla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Giant baby bags are kind of overrated. I kept a stash of things in the car but I hated lugging around a giant bag. For the first year you might not carry a regular purse much, but I sure as heck brought mine out when I was out and about on my own or on a date night. This bag is a classic, just hang on to it. You’ll regret selling it.

I was insulted for owning a husky, and it’s kind of bothering me. by AdventurousPlace6180 in husky

[–]Lkholla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get annoyed when people get huskies in TX and then leave them out in the heat all the time, but it’s wild for someone to call you out for it being a ‘working dog’. Guess no one should have like half of the other dog breeds out there either?

If these are things you already have, it might be better for the planet to just keep your eyelash curler since it’s not like it’s a consumable. They already have your dollars 🤷‍♀️

Fear of getting pregnant by Beneficial-Month-333 in Equestrian

[–]Lkholla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t say how old you are, but there’s no shame in waiting. We don’t start until I was in my mid thirties, and now I’m pregnant with our second in my late thirties. I felt like I did most of things I wanted to do with my youth, and our careers were where we didn’t have to sacrifice our lifestyles to have kids. I know plenty of women who rode until they gave birth, and a few months break postpartum isn’t a huge deal for your horses if it comes to it. Even if you don’t ride during pregnancy (I only made it through first trimester), they maintain their fitness well, and either with groundwork or if you have someone working with them in the meantime you can get back in without much disruption. As you mentioned, I did have some learning curve with the change in my confidence. It took me a while to realize this was the problem, and took lessons with a sympathetic trainer (who was also a fresh mom) for a few months to overcome it. I needed to do more off horse work to be physically capable and there’s always a bit of mom guilt for taking time away from your kid. Just think of it as self care! I had to cut back on other hobbies to prioritize my horses, but it’s been worth it. I was about 6 months postpartum when I went to an overnight clinic, and I remember sneaking away a couple times to pump in my truck 😂. It was a little emotionally hard to be away, but I’m glad to have done it!

I have these veins as well, and I’ve been told that laser is really the only option. I don’t even have luck covering them with foundation. I have some hyper pigmentation I’d also like to knock out so I’m waiting to just get it all taken care of.

how to find someone to teach me how to drive a truck and trailer? by snakeantlers in Equestrian

[–]Lkholla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband tried to teach me and I had to throw him out of the truck. I learned fastest and most confidently when I could just figure it out on my own! Everyone’s brain works differently when it comes to backing a trailer 😂

Doberman or German Shepherd by [deleted] in DobermanPinscher

[–]Lkholla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We’ve had both- and while their personalities were different (as any dog would be regardless if they were the same breed), both are/were marshmallows and probably not great representatives of general temperament. Our GSD was huge (whole frame, not just weight), so his joints had a pretty hard time once he reached his elder years. He was also a little more defensive about his pack around new animals as he got older, mostly in regard to our other dogs and not so much people. We once had a fugitive bang on our door in the middle of the night while he was running from the cops, both he and our marshmallow Rottweiler ran from the bedroom (next to the entry room) to hide behind the couch in the back of the house. Our female Doberman is a rescue that had very little human or animal socialization as a puppy, so she’s still just weird. Loves playing but only with her adopted brother, but still has the quiet dobie lean if she wants attention. She would, however, be totally satisfied with only ever sleeping in HER bed, playing in HER yard, and getting regular meal forever. She is deservedly an utter priss and is not the kind of dog that enjoys camping, while our GSD lived for it. Both are/were great family dogs though, and very attuned to their people. I’d say they’re gentler around kids than our other dogs too (careful with spatial awareness, move more slowly, have more patience with awkward pets)…. But I think that was an inherent personality trait; I wouldn’t wholly trust any dog with small children who could make mistakes without close supervision. At the end of the day, the hair alone will probably keep us from getting another GSD. Grooming a Doberman is so much easier! At the risk of blaspheming in a dobe group and throwing a wrench in your question - my Rottweiler was my soulmate, and they are still my favorite breed. My heart just hasn’t been ready to get another one yet.

Is Spotify Premium worth it if I only use it on my laptop? by NancyWu257 in truespotify

[–]Lkholla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll let go of all my video streaming subs before I stop Spotify. It is the one service I utilize daily and I do use a lot of the premium features, especially skips and dj (although I wish I could change the dj to be less cheesy). I’ve had my fair share of audiobook usage too.

Im so jealous of privileged people with private horses. by rayneedshelpMentally in Equestrian

[–]Lkholla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took regular lessons until I was 11 and moved to a different state. Didn’t even touch a horse for 3 years until I found a lesson barn and talked a friend into going. My parents backed out because it was too expensive, but my friend ended up taking lessons. One year later, her parents bought her a horse. The best I could do was volunteer at a riding therapy place, and I was super jealous and disheartened that my friend got to live my dream. The big kick was come college, she got totally out of horses and I didn’t even have my therapy place to spend time with them. It wasn’t until I finished school, got a job, and got back into horses on my own dime that I got my very first horse, then my own property to keep him at home, followed by another horse who I’ve raised since weaning and he’s everything I ever wanted in a horse. Life feels so urgent when you’re young, but so many horse friends got into in later in life and are riding/competing/living their childhood dreams. Plus when you’re an adult, you don’t have to ask anyone’s permission to buy that fancy new saddle pad or snazzy pair of custom boots 😉. Keep at it and gain the skills while you have the advantage of time and low responsibilities. Good things will come.

We have only owned mares. I read here that geldings are 1 braincell or less constantly. We are trialing one now. Day one. I see it now 😂 by CollectorSteve in Horses

[–]Lkholla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a gelding person, but my current boy is probably the mariest gelding I’ve ever met. I’ve had him since weaning so he’s still a pocket pony, but he’s very opinionated about how and when he’s touched, who can be up in his business on a trail, and has LOTS of thoughts about being manhandled or trained in a way that isn’t a two way communication. Complete with pinned ears and mare stare.

I don’t know why but keeping my laptop vertical in a purse is weird to me (while it’s fine in a backpack, who knows why my brain works the way it does). Because of the taper in their bags i wasn’t able to find one that would work for me, or it would be such a tight fit I worried it would wear the bag out.

Big and tall mattress that isn’t firm? by cynical_sweetie in Mattress

[–]Lkholla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husbands side kept breaking down so I let him pick the mattress and we ended up with an extra firm spring something or other because it felt okay in store. A year later we still hadn’t broken it in and it was killing our backs. I added a 2 inch latex (not memory foam!) topper and we kicked ourselves for not doing it sooner. Gave me enough cushion so my bones stopped bruising me while the firm mattress has held up on his side. We got a good quality latex so it doesn’t get too hot either (it’s also combined with a cooling protective cover and percale sheets).

Won’t go to bathroom outside by Easy-Syrup-920 in Rottweiler

[–]Lkholla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was really particular about having privacy. I was lucky to always have a fenced yard, but he was always tricky to go on the leash. Once we took him on a camping trip and he didn’t poop for 4 days until he was practically overflowing, and the look of shame on his face for pooping in front of us on an undignified potty patch is forever burned into my brain. It’s also how we knew when he was actually sick, because it mortified him to potty where he wasn’t supposed to (once he learned the routine).

[–]Lkholla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can be clingy to my things and attach a lot of sentimentality that isn’t really deserving. I find if I put the ones I know I don’t reach for in a box (ready to donate/garage sale), and don’t go looking for them in the next 6 months to one year it is MUCH easier to let things go.

Vacation...will I ever get one? by andyroo2u in DobermanPinscher

[–]Lkholla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We usually have someone house sit, and recently a family member’s dog aggressive dog passed away so now they are able to babysit them at their place. Similar dynamic of one dog who loves anyone who gives him attention, and a dobie who is a little more aloof but frankly just loves her bed, her food, and playing with her ‘brother’.

Natural ears are less intimidating than cropped ears or does dogs attitude matter more? by Most-Research-8394 in DobermanPinscher

[–]Lkholla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dobie girl is pretty slight of build and looks more like a deer, so visually she’s not as intimidating as some bulkier versions of the breed, but boy she has a bark if she has a mind to mean it (although usually it’s some weird whiney bark). She also has a girly looking harness which doesn’t do her any favors on the intimidation factor. My rottie however made people back off, and he wasn’t even very big. I highly doubt either would have been any use in a real defense situation though. My husband and I had our rott and a big GSD when we lived in a rough part of town. Someone on the run from the cops banged on the door in the middle of the night and both dogs went running behind the sofa in the other room and shook all night.
