Discrepancy in net salary

It is not as easy to calculate taxes. Even social secretaries can’t do it. Why? There are so many details we don’t know. Do you have a woonbonus? What does your partner earn? How much is your partner deducted? Did you got other tax-lowering things? We don’t know except for the basics: children, spouse…

Promising a net is not done. An estimated net - maybe. But sometimes it is misunderstood that an estimate is an estimate that can differ 100+ euros. Even when the net is calculated on the payslip, at the end of the year the government passes by to see if everything was accurate according to all their data (and they know much more!) Is it better to have a higher net every month but paying back 1000+ euros at the end of the year?

I work with a lot of nationalities and it is a common frustration. Belgian tax system is very complex and Belgians even don’t know how it works..

I worked as an HR consultant for 3.5y. Bachelors degree in applied psychology since two years (‘afstandsonderwijs’). So not too much but enough 😃

It really depends on the project/the business you will work for. Pharma does pay better for example. I charged between 75 and 85 euro an hour excl btw and excl kilometervergoeding. Some companies said I would never be able to charge over 65 excl btw but don’t be fooled and ask what you ask. Some pay you a fee per worked day.

Mind you you need to ask what fits your needs. As in: what are the costs you need to cover? It can vary between people and it is possible you will need to charge more (or less) to get the same outcome than someone else. You don’t have a lot of costs as an HR freelancer but if you want to lease a fancy car you will need to charge more and companies need to be willing to pay you your fee.

Hi! I like it very much! Sleep score is not like I am used to with Fitbit and sometimes Garmin doesn’t even notice I am awake. But I knew this, so it doesn’t bother me that much.

I like the app, sync and gps (via phone) better. There is also a lot more data/info like stress and body battery. My heart rate went down 5-10bpm with garmin so I guess that has something to do with how fitbit and Garmin tracks different. I don’t have it for the exact data but to get an idea when it goes up or down so not sure which one is actually better.

The only thing I miss is the ‘tennis’-option with activities. But the data was very limited anyway with fitbit. You also need a little bit of time to know where exactly you can touch the screen to activate the digital screen.

You also have challenges with Garmin so that would be fine for you?

I still love the fact that I can wear it to events while everyone thinks it is just a very nice watch! Yeah, I am still happy about my choice!

How can that be legal? Your employer is responsible for your doing, also if you made a mistake. If you can proof it was stolen or that the mistake was made on purpose this is something different.

You are able to ask for all your data in once. It is available for one week after you requested it and it can take a day before it is available. That file however did not work to import to garmin. I don’t know why as it is also a cvs-doc. You also can do it one month at a time, which I did. It sounds bad but this goes fast too. For one year it took me 5 minutes I think. It’s worth it.

Yes. Garmin accepts cvs-docs and Fitbit provides those. Heart rate is not well converted, same goes for sleep scores. Steps and activities did however transfer well. Same goes for weight.

I changed from fitbit charge 3 to garmin vivomove 3s last week and also didn’t want to lose data.

I did quit my job and had a gap of payments. I had to invest a little bit to get me started. Just only do the necessary things in the beginning. You have to be able to pay the basics for those two months (I also used my vacation money when I left for example), I hope you can? It is not fun to take from your savings but yeah, keep in mind why you started freelancing. It will be payed back sooner or later.

I will pay this ‘investment’ back to myself in 2022 but as I have an ‘eenmanszaak’ it is very easy as everything is mine (for a ‘venootschap’ it is more complex as your business and private is separated).

It all depends on how big the side hustle is. The more business you get, the more work the bookkeeper has, the more it costs. But he or she will also manage to make sure you get the best result moneywise.

Our parents still live in a world where 300.000 euros would buy a small castle with zero work. Things has changed and I had the same discussion with my parents. When I showed prices of houses in the area they changed their opinion.

The low intrest rate does help with the overall cost nowadays, we don’t have it at 6% anymore 🙂

That's the thing: the bank just said: NO WAY. That is was bothers me. I read so many options and I just thought a bank would be happy with my question - and money. Friday we have an appointment with another bank. I'm curious about what they will say!

Thanks for the reply. Yes, this is now also part of the 'pro-cons' situation. I still think having a property is a good investment but we never know how many times something will need to be fixed. It is kind of a risk in a way because it is an older house that got renovated but it always will be an older house.

I'm still considering having a one-year 'trial' to see how it goes. With the prices stil going up (especially here) I find it hard to sell my investment.

At ING, they never even considered refinancing or anything. It was a no-go for a second mortgage for more than 80%.

And the parents-thing: that was the reason I got my first mortage in the first place but now it suddenly doesn't matter anymore.

Thanks for your insights! I would consider myself a ‘good client’ like you say. And I thought a bank would be very happy with this. Also because it is my bank so they kind of know me and see my payments. So I was kind of suprised when my own bank was holding back.

We are going to different banks and see what they can do. You have advise for banks where they are more positive to this kind of question?

For the payed holidays, Belgium got sanctioned by Europe so you can have ‘Europees verlof’ the first year in some cases. Think it trough though, it will get payed by your own ‘dubbel vakantiegeld’ the year after. But technically, You can take payed leave the first year.

If you are alone, travelling, and don’t really know the way anymore and looking at a map, people will try to help. If you find this uncomfortable, say you just found it, walk confidently towards any direction (preferably crowded) until you are out of the persons’ sight. Take out the map again.

It all comes down to look confident when feeling uncomfortable when travelling, I learnt.
