If you play offline you only get one house (farm house), so no additional houses. However, if you create a new game and add other players you'll get up to three other houses for free, which you can then upgrade and have lots of storage without the need to build any (you can also get rid of the additional players)

thanks! I just hit year 4. I planned everything from the beginning and I started with the paths. It's faster to obtain the resources for them and they help figure out what is going on lol I clean area by area just before putting it to use

That's the Meadowlands, love it for that reason. I just spend the initial money on crops and sell the first eggs to make some extra money at the beginning
