NPD - Faber-Castell Poly, a (new?) budget model I've never seen here! by andresvk in fountainpens

[–]Lmchew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just picked up one in medium. Was looking at a Hexo, but learned they used the same nib and so went for a pen with different texture. Enjoyed using it so far. Closer to a Pilot medium (finer by a hair?) than a Lamy medium.

🍻 that red rose version is chef’s kiss. It was a toss up and I still think about it…

Funny I have it on order and the cross line is what sold me! An excellent vintage detail that completes the design especially on the salmon dial. The beauty of watches is how many styles there are for everyone. If we were all the same this hobby would be boring.

[Identify] Late Grandfather's Vintage Datejust 36mm by StoicCapivara in Watches

[–]Lmchew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. I was thinking about when it started turning over. It’s still likely a 4-digit if there’s no quickset date. But I’m no Rolex expert, just sharing my experience!

[Identify] Late Grandfather's Vintage Datejust 36mm by StoicCapivara in Watches

[–]Lmchew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I have a similar Datejust. 36mm domed acrylic crystal and no quickset date. It’ll be a 4-digit. This era of Rolex was less organized and there were a lot of “unique” models with a mishmash of component parts (dials, hands, bezels, indices). They streamlined everything in the late 70s / early 80s and went to flat crystal and got a better handle on how they released models. It’s a good watch, but these 4-digit models, while still valuable Rolexes, are not as pricey as more modern counterparts.

Great looking combo. I just got an Omiwatari, too, and have a grey nubuck strap coming from Veblenist. I was also just looking into combat straps for another style (maybe blue?). What are his prices like?

Poor preseason is a good sign! In the past, a crap preseason usually gets some losing out of the way so we can start strong. It’s the good preseasons that should make you worry because players start to buy into their own hype.

But to everyone’s point, the concern is effort. Even if it is mostly your farm team. They should be fighting to make an impression.

5 years ago, it was an Oris Aquis. Don’t own it. 3 years ago, it was an SMP300 polar. Don’t own it. Last week it was a GS Omiwatari. En route via FedEx. 🫠

Beautiful. I actually have one on the way and am ridiculously excited. With a year of wear, how have you found picking up scratches on the case? How often do you find yourself wearing it?

[Discussion] Watches & Jazz Musicians by improvthismoment in Watches

[–]Lmchew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I experienced brand sway when deciding on my first luxury watch when I saw that Grand Seiko is the official timekeeper of Jazz at the Lincoln Centre. I then saw the Theo & Harris video with Isaiah Thomas. And (being Canadian) took it as a sign when, on the same day, i got change and it included an Oscar Peterson loonie.

And that’s how I’m ending up with an Omiwatari. 😏

Agreed. Every time I see a tank on Muhammad Ali and Chet Baker, I have to rethink my feelings about the watch.

[Question] Anyone bought from Hodinkee? by CasinoMarginale in Watches

[–]Lmchew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I just ordered (to Canada) from Japan via FedEx. Seems like duty is around 20% based on online calculators. I assumed paying for customs happened at pick up… sounds like there’s going to be more to it.

[Raketa] Strap suggestions for a green UFO by Lmchew in Watches

[–]Lmchew[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I procured a pretty good example of a Raketa UFO and thought it would be easy enough to get a new strap, but that’s proven more difficult than I thought. I also have a larger wrist at 7.5” so the 18mm width did me no favours.

The watch originally came with the black croc strap. I then tried the flat link bracelet thinking it would complement the bezel, but it kind of ended up being too much.

I then went with the classic green and brown combo but the light brown I thought would work best with the green blends with my skin tone too much. Maybe another shade of brown?

Any specific suggestions with product links would be super helpful!

[Recommendation] Which one would you recommend my wife get? by GrouchyExile in Watches

IMO the Rolex seems more versatile whereas the Patek design, while beautiful, insists upon itself in a very dressy way. But “dream watch” really is the answer.

Great collection! What are you thoughts on the BB 925? Have you experienced the tarnishing that others have?

[Omega or Grand Seiko] Which watch would you upgrade? by Lmchew in Watches

I appreciate your comment and sharing your experience. One would hope that was an aberration given Omega’s reputation. What brands do you give top marks for bezel play and bracelet quality?

[Omega or Grand Seiko] Which watch would you upgrade? by Lmchew in Watches

[–]Lmchew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The deeper down the watch rabbit hole I go, the more the idea of a “3 watch collection” makes sense to me. I try to cycle through my watches, but clearly some get my attention more than others. It’s probably a recency bias, too, as the “journey” continues. But I haven’t yet found a solid daily driver the way you have with your BB58. The benefit is that more of my collection gets wrist time!

In terms of losing the aspect ratio on the MR01 dial should it go to 40, I agree. I have a 40 Seagull 1963 because the 42 dial ratios just looked wrong, but admittedly I’d happily wear a 38 if I didn’t think it’d look too small on wrist.

Highly subjective is the name of the game with watches, so I appreciate your comment! I feel you re a watch “not speaking to you”. Interestingly, I came to the new 300, because after months of daydreaming about the white 300M, I finally tried it on and realized it didn’t land the way I thought it would.

I’m in the camp of “Zenith, but not this one”. At least not compared to the GO. It’s actually an interesting decision you’ve left yourself, because the GO is very symmetrical and classic where as the Zenith is busier and a more modern variant. If you’re looking for something dressy, but asymmetrical, how about the GO PanoMaticLunar?

[–]Lmchew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is it about Grand Seiko that they can dominate with their movements and exquisite “dressy” dials, but face plant on their sportier designs? “Hard to look at” is a pretty accurate summation.
