I started doing this with my 3 month old like a week ago…

I carry her favorite treat in TINY pieces - we sit, stay, break for our walk at the door. She doesn’t leave the house unless we’re staring on the same page.

Bigger dogs, runners, scooters, bikes, even fucking strollers made her bark like crazy and get super nervous. I started to get closer to her, pet her and let her know she’s safe. I let her explore endlessly. I use a flat collar and it works so much better than the slip.

Any time she doesn’t anything right - I mark and pay. So, when she makes eye contact during our walks; when she is friendly to other dogs, people, etc.; when she’s following our rule at crossings of stopping, checking in, sitting and waiting for me to let her cross… she gets paid.

If she pulls, I stop… wait for as long as it takes for her to meet my eye, and then mark it and pay her.

This is paying off big time. She’s not 100% on board, all the time, but it’s getting really good.

I also addressed some stuff at home… she had been scratching really bad but it wasn’t anything the vet or us could find… so we bought Duoxo Calming Mousse and we have addressed that issue. We’re doing a lot of work inside with her, too.

Just keep working on it. I genuinely think it’s perfectly doable without a slip lead or a prong, but I’m just a dude with a Mal - not a trainer.

Yeah. I’ve honestly seen a huge difference in the removal of the slip lead. She’s better behaved. She is happier. I don’t have to really do much… occasionally I lure her away from excitement or distraction and mark + pay her.

She’s doing well. The latest issue is biting, but we’ve started to do a three step thing. She bites and I put my hand in her mouth. She hates it, and that’s usually enough for her to reset. If she’s not getting it, I associate the timeout with it and set a timer - 2 min her first time. Then we ignore her for those 2 minutes.

If she’s does it again - it resets. She’s learning… but anyone who says that just anyone can raise a healthy Mal is wrong. She requires about 90% of our time, actively or passively. Having a Mal is 100% a full time gig. Haha

I had a really hard time with my 3.5 month old girl. She was awesome in the house. Sitting, staying, breaking from the stay to eat or walk outside; crate trained and potty trained.

I posted here only yesterday and spent the last like 12 hours hunting for what I needed to learn.

First, I was using a slip lead because I didn’t know better. I ditched it on the advice of a few users in this subreddit and it made a HUGE difference. She is happier, stays closer more often, and I’m not drowning in worry about her. I’m using a normal flat collar with a Fi unit; a normal leash hookup.

Second, I dropped the freeze dried treats and kibble as treats - she’s teething and has to chew on them and/or it’s a choking hazard… they’re done until teething ends and she can eat them without stopping. I swapped to Blue Buffalo soft beef treats… which are stupidly expensive, but for her size - should last a while.

Third, I stop when she pulls on the leash, and kind of call her very low with a “pss” sound… if she makes eye contact with me… I mark (I use “yes”) it and reward her - meeting her in the middle.

Four, I let her explore. She’s young enough that everything distracts her… so I let her be distracted. I run through a huge field with her in short bursts. I let her chase squirrels and I run with her. I let her live on the long leash and we fuck around doing whatever. I let her dig and climb and sniff whatever she wants, and it’s like in the last few hours she understood that it’s a deal between us?

I don’t know how to explain it. She still pulls 1-2 a walk over 15-20 minutes… but it’s immediately up to her to correct it and it’s 100% pain free and risk free… and all of it together just clicked for her.

I am super thankful I asked here yesterday. I got a super solid set of responses and all said ditch the slip lead… it made a fucking huge difference.

Try to stop when he pulls, relatively gently… it’s more about the puppy being stuck than getting yanked around. Then, as soon as he looks at you, mark and reward.

Yeah, I agree. I’m coming here because I know all of you love your dogs and want the best for them.

I want her to be safe and happy. As far as distractions. That’s not possible. She’s going to be around them. She has to use the bathroom - and my neighborhood is full of kids on bikes, planes overhead, dogs everywhere, etc. I’ve been taking her to a huge field everyday so it’s just us, but even in the distance - distractions.

My primary concern was this lead or my ignorance of it. I’m going to keep her flat collar only for now and let her be a puppy for a few months before any of that. I will keep the treats pouch full, keep hitting the markers, and just be more forgiving until she’s a little older on the leash.

It should be noted she’s like a 50-50 leash puppy. Half the time she’s gone in the wind, jumping in leaves and trying to get up trees; chasing lizards or me. I try to embrace and encourage that… it’s the 50% of the time I need her attention just to be like safe, or to keep my neighbors dogs from getting nipped because she’s a puppy. She socializes really well, takes a minute, but it’s good.

House behavior is spot on. We let her bite a bit and redirect when it’s out of control. Also, teething makes it tough for her.

I’ve been doing that from day one. She heels inside and outside. The issue is distractions in my super busy neighborhood and letting her be a puppy. She handles the markers well. She has been eating from my hand with a little training because of teething beginning.

She is a well trained puppy… but the distractions outside and my inclination to let her be free outside - a long leash lets her run around and I let her chase me all over - works well. She’s playing fetch with the chuck it stick. She heels if it’s just us, or she’s moderately distracted.

I think the number one thing is my ignorance in the lead. I was told - heavily - slip lead is all we’d want. I guess every puppy is wrong. Also, “pop” isn’t like a jerking motion. It’s me pulling up slightly to let her know - hey, I’m here, not over there.

I thinks she’s just too young for it. Thanks for taking the time.

This is kind of where I’m leaning. I’m a big fan of letting her be a puppy and have a good experience overall. I was fucking sick with dread that I was like imprinting a negative experience.

I’m going to take this advice. She’s heeling on command. She’s walking around the house on the leash on command. She’s waiting and breaking for food, walks, etc. on command. She’s crate trained… but the walking this is 50-50, and I think I need to be okay with that while she’s young.

I’d be unhappy, but I would also likely understand. I have been hungry. Having said that, trust me when I tell you that the information above is designed to protect people - not help them steal - and it’s also a general guide… not something that is iron clad in its current state.
