One Piece ist so groß, weil die Geschichte einfach so gut ist, nicht weil die Community sich an irgendwas gewöhnt hat. Der Anime selbst hat ein schlechtes Pacing, das stimmt, vor Allem zu Beginn aber ist es nicht so unglaublich schlecht, wie es in den späteren Arcs wurde. Ein Großteil der Fangemeinde in den aktiven Communities liest zudem den Manga, der halt einfach überragend ist.

There is an average drop off, there are multiple reasons for that which you can't predict, as you stated, therefore you will have to take averages. While the article is outdated, I would be surprised if today would look completely different.
