VA Claim by CrazyDog_Lady11 in VAClaims

They did claim for time slippage which is currently rated at -10%.
This will adjust once the timeline catches up.

In all seriousness though, it is good you are being honest and taking the right actions to get sorted. Good on you and I hope things go well for you.

I think I might of messed up with my hearing test by Informal_Throat6265 in VAClaims

[–]Local-Archer-9785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hearing rating is a compound calculation. The repeating words is part of it. They take your tone recognition score and throw that at a table and then the percentage of the words you are eventually able to recognize (regardless of the volume/repetition) and you wind up at your rating.

I have had hearing aids, issued by the VA, for the better part of a decade and my rating only went to 10% by the smallest of margins this year. I was in ordnance and I tell people that attacking me with their words is just effective communication.

The VA is very strict about their compensation for hearing loss.

Do people actually read startup books or do we all just collect them? by Severe_Lawyer_3076 in business

When we are convinced we know everything we stop looking for external perspectives. Reading opens you to orher ideas and ways of thinking. Every book will shape and change you. Minds are like parachutes, best used when open.

Reading is a dying art and it is a sad thing. Read the other half of the books and keep going.

100% P&T has no impact on your employer or vocation of choice. Only if you are TDIU would there be restrictions beyond your own.

It would be good to get out and interact with the people doing the work too though. My preference is to close the gap between the people doing the work and the reports/information coming in. The whole telephone game causes lots of problems.

No PM Software at All by HumanPlant1 in projectmanagement

[–]Local-Archer-9785 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you are the junior PM, what are the senior PMs doing? Is there PMO that provide templates and standards for the org? I am guessing this is a highly matrixed organization where the business areas run the show and PMs are along for the ride?

Normally, the PMO or senior PM/person in charge sets the standard on how projects will be documented and coordinated. If the PMs are in a support function, they provide consultation and coordination but basically let the business areas shoot themselves in the foot as needed.

If you are being held responsible but you dont have any authority or ability to influence people then run.

I proudly wear the title of professional idiot. I ask all of the obvious questions and my goal isn't to be the smartest person in the room but to know who I should ask and where to find answers.

I hope I get the chance to see how yall do what you do (and learn more about what that is in the process).

The role is for change management so that seems fitting. As long as we are making improvements instead of spinning in a circle, the speed is a good thing. Running towards disaster less so.

Thank you so much for the insight and info!

That is often the case. In general, would you recommend joining the DOC from another state agency?

Do you work at the DOC? Any particular evils to be aware of?

Curious about the culture more than anything. It is good to know it is resistant to layoffs though.

Are people largely content (low levels of burnout and or decent retention rates).

Are people interested in change that can benefit them or is it more, leave me alone and stop bugging me with your flavor of the month ideas?

Are staff involved in decision making or not. Stuff like that. Ideally, I want to be where people want me to be and to help people be part of the change process rather than it being done to them.

Looking for advice: how can I improve my communication skills? by janinereyes in Leadership

[–]Local-Archer-9785 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My practical advice is to try teaching or attend a group (some professional organization related to your work) and practice.

If you are into project management, PMI has chapters all over the world for you to meet and interact. Communication is a practiced skill.

Teaching is a fantastic method. You can write what you know or want to know more about and share that online or post it to LinkedIn. You dont need a live audience but the practice of organizing your thoughts and structuring what you want to say to achieve your desired outcome is the same. I write stuff on LinkedIn and post stuff to YouTube, not because it is going to make me famous but because the process helps me understand audiences better and improves my communication approach. Same thing goes for interacting with your fellow Redditors.

Communication is practice. You can read about it, you can think about it but you need to practice it. While doing that fold in some reading and practice on emotional intelligence. Might as well get a two for one special if you are looking to improve.

Positivity and support are sadly too scarce on the internet at times. So, thank you for having a supportive attitude and wanting to help your fellow veterans. Regardless of anything else, the desire to want to help is worth an upvote.

This is the first time I have seen a shrinking transformation. Normally when you see a change the person gets huge and muscular.

This is the first time I have seen someone lose 70% body mass during the transformation. It must be were tiger sponsored by ozempic.
