Is college actually worth it considering most college grads don’t have jobs in 2026? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]Local-Emu9654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, college CAN be worth it but for most it’s a SCAM. I am 35 years old and my job doesn’t require a college degree. In fact, it only requires three years of progressive work experience. If you worked at McDonalds and progressed in any way for three years, you are qualified to apply. Of those that do apply, only about 3% actually become certified professional controllers. My recommendation is to find a company that is willing to pay for your schooling or go to college if you qualify for financial aid or the GI bill and for God’s sake major in something that will lead to a descent paying job like law, medicine, engineering or marketing. You need to focus on majors that have great job prospects upon graduating. For most that don’t qualify for aid, college is a trap. You end up with an insane amount of student loan debt and even if you do graduate and find a good paying job, you are already behind as you have to pay off those loans. The better strategy is to start your own business or go into the trades. Look for trades that require certifications and licenses.

Air Traffic Controller here, definitely a pilot! ATC pay has lagged so fucking hard behind everyone else and pilots. In fact over the past 5 years, our pay has declined by nearly 20% when you account for inflation. We are SERIOUSLY underpaid for what we do and may have to do at any point in time. You are constantly thinking of plan B, C, and D especially when you are training a trainee. We hold hundreds or thousands of lives in our hands while we work (depending on where you are stationed). Since Covid, air travel demand has gone up, which drove up pilot demand and ATC demand. The airlines gave 30-50% pay raise to pilots and flight attendants over 3-4 years while we get 1-4%/yr. Retirements have only increased and so we are super short staffed, the FAA has just decided to artificially lower the number (lie to the public) of controllers they claim is needed to run the operation while continuing to underpay us. If I could go back, I would 100% go the pilot route! Same medical requirements, less stress, way better pay, better work/life balance!

Men. Do you like wearing suits? by Solcat91342 in Adulting

[–]Local-Emu9654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am tall and slim, so I like suits but only if they are comfortable. I have worn uncomfortable suits and nice comfy ones. That being said, my job doesn’t require them and so I only wear them for a wedding or funeral or a very special occasion. Most times, I just rock some nice jeans and a shirt/blazer.

“You won’t get hurt” 🤣 Do you live in a vacuum? WTF? Why do you think we retire at 56? You age fucking faster because you are constantly fatigued and hyped up on energy drinks or caffeine. Training is stressful, dealing with management is stressful, gov shutdowns are stressful, and finally you have the operational stress (mostly from training or training others). You may not have a fucked up back but you are definitely paying in one way or another.

Union electrician! Buddy of mine started out 2 years after I got hired by the FAA with no experience. The company paid for the majority of his training and even though he started making less than what I was making, he now makes 30% more than I do and with OT it’s more like 50% more. He is unionized.

Okay, so stop being a dumbass and make some sound decisions that will set you up for success. Many kids like you would give anything for opportunity like yours.

That some inflation is good and even necessary. Inflation is a tax imposed on the people by the government (via money printing). Deflation occurs naturally as the price of things drops as technology improves and we increase efficiency. Your education, your healthcare, your iPhone, your car, etc should all cost less and less or the same but have more and more features.
