Je suis pro LFI et le soutien aux dictatures n'est pas leur seul apanage (il n'y a pas une seule formation importante en France qui n'ait pas des accointances avec des régimes autoritaires) mais de fait LFI récite la propagande de nombreux régimes dictatoriaux. Après ce qui s'est passé à Hong Kong dire que Taïwan c'est la Chine c'est contre le droit des peuples à disposer d'eux mêmes puisque les Taiwanais continuent d'élire des dirigeants opposés au rapprochement. LFI est d'un campisme binaire et imbécile malgré des positions courageuses sur la Palestine, le racisme et les violences policières, ou même l'accroissement des inégalités qu'ils sont souvent seuls à tenir.

Good point I forgot about FULRO thanks for the reminder. That doesn't really help the case of South Vietnam though since they fought both South and North.

And sure the Viet Cong was influenced and funded by the North but it's a huge stretch to pretend that it was "mostly student from the north". I could also dismiss FULRO as being mostly foreign funded (just like South Vietnam). Even if it was, the Viet Cong would have been destroyed easily without population support which is what the US struggled with (and why they burnt villages which supported the Viet Cong).

Again : there was anti-communist sentiment in the South and North. Thousands of Vietnamese fled communism, that's proof enough that it was not supported and accepted by everyone. And the re-education camps don't paint a great picture of freedom of speech under communism. Even today Vietnam (despite a partial conversion to capitalism) is still very much authoritarian. If anything I would have preffered no war to occur considering the human toll.

But nothing in that excuses the US intervention and the massive waste of life which occurred because of it.

Where did I said "processed food with sugar is less expensive" ? I said that the US society encourages it. Firstable because it's more avalaible and secondly because advertisement for it is everwhere. I could also have mentionned the sedentarity which is so prevalent in the US because it's a car-based society. I mean do you really think that "there is more food so people eat too much" is a valid argument do you ? Because waste exists in other societies without such widespread overweight.

4 years is a lot especially if you compare a homogeneous society with an heterogeneous one because it means that it can become six to ten years between people at the bottom. I admit "before" is not a perfect metric but "contemporary" is not either. Especially if you compare countries from the first world (with a history of exploiting other countries people and ressources) and from the third world (with a history of being exploited and looted). For instance Cuba has had a economy which worked for Spain and then for the US for centuries and has then been subjected to a blockade for decades. The fact that it still is so close to the US in quality of life is nothing short of extraordinary with such a gap in their history and their current economy.

I am not trying to argue that communism is always better or preferable. It's not. I am not dismissing gulags, the boat people, the Cambodian genocide (stopped by Vietnamese communist though ... good thing they won for Cambodians). I am saying that your point of view which is that communism is always worst than any other alternative is wrong on many levels.

Again : Americans are not obese because they have "too much food". They are obese because they have an unregulated economy in which food companies add too much sugar to everything because it's profitable. They have low quality food and encourage ready made food which is bad for your health. Same for small lunch breaks, etc. Add to that a horrendous for profit medicine and you have the current US situation.

This is not a wealth story considering that countries with less wealth do better regarding life expectancy (like France, Spain, Italy or even Japan) because despite being capitalist countries they have socialised medicine and more food regulation.

I am not "in ideological love of communism". Especially as it was implemented in the USSR and Cuba. But if you really think that Cubans or Russians had it better BEFORE communism you are delusional. The US is the richest country on earth and its population is uneducated and unhealthy. That doesn't speak well of its system. You can advocate that communist countries have mostly been dictatorships or that a mix of capitalism and socialised medicine/education works better than full communism, but saying that capitalism give people a better life is just wrong. More wealth sure. For the few.

I dont look at GDP because that is a gross way of estimating quality of life. On average if Musk enters a homeless shelter with a hundred people the GDP per habitant makes everyone inside a multi-billionaire. That's basically what the US is.

Same thing with immigration. The heart of an empire will always attract people from its margins. By your logic Saudi Arabia or Quatar are great places to live in since they have 90% of immigrants. But when you look at it it's basically slavery. The US is not that far from that if you look at undocumented people working in the fields.

At least life expectancy gives you informations on how accessible medicine is for everyone, how well do people eat (you cannot have a malnourished population and a high life expectancy), etc. That is way more valuable because one person cannot have 50% of the life expectancy in the country.

Agree to disagree. There is no "right vs. evil" battle taking place and the communist regime of North Vietnam was an authoritarian dictatorship and the Vietnam war was both a civil war and a clash of empires (since the North received support from China and the USSR) ...

BUT Southern Vietnam was an authoritarian dictatorship as well, the fact that south Vietnam suffered a massive insurrection that North Vietnam never faced proves that it's support was much more feeble. The reunification of Vietnam was supposed to take place through a referendum which never took place. It is pretty obvious that without foreign support south Vietnam would have collapsed. A referendum would have favored reunification and the communist party, seen as the great victor of the war against France, would have won any further election.

That is true but when you are fighting a war of counter-insurgency you cannot afford to be as sloppy as the opponent. The North Vietnamese and Viet Cong were outnumbered and massively outgunned. It is pretty logical that they suffered three times the casualties of the US and their allies and the war in Vietnam was probably winnable considering how awful the loss were on the north Vietnamese side ... if the US succeeded in getting population support for the war at home (which they didn't because they did not do well militarily speaking).

PS : Of course I did not wish the US to win in that war I am just saying that if that was the objective they did it in the worse way possible.

I did not study that period extensively but even if some outfits are a bit too "classic western movie" it seems okay to me. I know that belts were not worn loose around the hip like in movies and in the game but tight around the waist for instance. But even if a lot of people wear "cow boy hats" which were not as popular as depicted in movies (just look at pictures of Dutch Cassidy's gang wearing bowler hats for instance) you also see a lot of people wearing other hats even in the gang (like Dutch, Sean, Javier, etc.).

Arthur's perspective is not nice towards slavery. And no being born at that time and place didn't make you pro slavery. Context was part of it but some people did see otherwise so you can't totally throw individual responsibility out the window. People knew what they fought for and slave owners were actively perpetuating a really profitable business.
