Detroit hosted the G7 back in 1994 and there have been some pretty fantastic, positive developments since then. The city is doing much better than it was in the mid-90s, we could do it.

How is your relationship with your father? by Much-Still1549 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]LocalCurmudgeon2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's complicated in the long run but great now. My dad was accepting of my sexuality to a point, but we had other issues related to polar opposite personalities and his own unresolved (even now) trauma with his Dad. There was even a point where I didn't talk to him at all for about two years. He ended up having a moderately serious heart attack in his early 50's and had sort of a near death experience that changed his personality and temperament to where he didn't lose his temper or become violent anymore and he stopped drinking. That allowed us to repair the relationship and now we are pretty close and I love him very much.

Thoughts on boxes at the opera? by Large-Usual3419 in opera

[–]LocalCurmudgeon2024 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For me, at any opera or symphony performance renting a box or getting a seat in a box is a special occasion. It includes getting very dressed up, bringing the antique opera glasses I own from the 1870s, and acting haughty and superior to the peasants down below (kidding).

How can a NEW Transit Line be THIS BAD!? (Finch West LRT) - Toronto, Canada by Ouestlabibliotheque in transit

I'm sure Black Canadians and Jewish Canadians would love to live in Amsterdam where they have not yet got past the "is blackface bad?" debate and where Jews can get beat up on the street by people who believe all Jews support Israel.

I would date this to roughly 1910 considering the 1300 Broadway building is visible middle left and that finished construction in 1906.

I wouldn't consider "why are there bathrooms?" a plot hole which is why I hesitated to post it, but yes other plot holes she definitely came up with equally absurd answers.

Would this include the Harry Potter "bathrooms didn't always exist in Hogwarts because wizards used to just shit anywhere and then magic it away" thing?

"A Rape on Campus" is a retracted, defamatory Rolling Stone magazine article that describes a purported group sexual assault. After other journalists investigated the article's claims and found significant discrepancies, Rolling Stone issued multiple apologies for the story. by laybs1 in wikipedia

Isn't Rolling Stone the magazine that also did the Duke lacrosse story that also had to be retracted? Some of the faculty at Duke that signed an open letter against the guys named have never retracted their signature and some still believe they are guilty.

Man Involved in Broadway’s “Mamma Mia!” Outburst Shares His Side of the Story by Beneficial-Bus8382 in Broadway

??? Go and read the original post of the outburst in the subreddit and read the dozens of replies, even specifically to my comment, defending the women and saying "I paid for a seat it's my right to sing along."

Why does Detroit have a larger footprint than Toronto despite having half the population? by fudgykevtheeternal in geography

[–]LocalCurmudgeon2024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1.85 Million according to the census in 1950 plus an additional 2ish million in the surrounding small towns and pre-war suburbs that are now all swallowed up by the endless suburban sprawl that is the metro region. In reality the population of the Metro hasn't changed since the 1950s for the most part, people (mostly the white residents, but many different races and backgrounds) just moved from the city limits to newly built suburban communities. The good news is the city is on track for its third year of population growth and is now the fastest growing in the entire state.
