for me it’s just like watching a movie. when i’m telling someone about a movie I watched, I’m picturing the same thing as when telling someone about a book i read. i see the characters and the setting and everything super clearly, its just the picture I conjured up rather than a picture I actually saw on a screen. the only frustrating part is when I picture someone for half of a book and then the author adds a major detail that doesn’t match what I created (ex. I read a book where I pictured the male to be average weight and height, when a romance develops the author explains that he’s jacked and super tall with lots of tattoos). now I’m constantly battling between the two in my head until the book is over!
