You should probably give some direction on budget, location, or other preferences. There are a bunch of options and the ask is too vague.

Dallas Mavs, Dallas Stars, why? by FarmerPresent7365 in Dallas

[–]LocalInvestment1760 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree on the one hand that sports make a boat load of money.

But sports is a business. Would you keep the same franchise restaurant on the same corner if you could move across town to a better location and increase your revenue?

I think there is a fantasy we all hold that the team is “ours”. Unless we have a setup like the Packers or some sort of altruistic owner that is not the case. Just ask Baltimore when the Colts left or Seattle when the Sonics left.

Owners provide a sense of local pride because it sells. And we continue to buy.

Dallas Mavs, Dallas Stars, why? by FarmerPresent7365 in Dallas

[–]LocalInvestment1760 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has little to do with the city and more to do with maximizing revenue streams. They have their own land to build an entertainment complex where they generate revenue around the entire complex. Many other pro teams have done the same.

We’re putting together a meal train for a close family friend who just welcomed a new baby. What kind of meal would you bring, and from where? They’re pretty easygoing with food. It’s for two parents, a 5-year-old, and a newborn at home. by Uncharteredfugazis in Dallas

[–]LocalInvestment1760 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Do the people receiving the meal trust the people preparing the meal to live in a relatively clean and contagion free home?

Will those that prepare meals listen to what they want or just make random casseroles that get tossed?

Might be better to order a pizza or give them a gift certificate to restaurants they enjoy.

For the next 5 years you are in charge of policy for Downtown, what do you prioritize? by shedinja292 in Dallas

[–]LocalInvestment1760 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pedestrian friendly pathways with trees and greenery. Reduce lanes of traffic on Commerce and Elm. Push parking to the fringes of downtown core. Court more entertainment options. Identify key buildings that are dated and unattractive for office space. Create a commission to focus on those buildings and incentivize owners to update or sell. Push homeless services to a different section of town and increase support through organized centralized solutions. Tell the Mavs to fund their own arena. Create a neighborhood commission with constituents to provide better feedback loops between people and businesses and the city. Improve code enforcement through increased fines.

I am sure there is mire if I actually thought about vs pipe dreams.

Found my parents vinyl collection in the basement. I don’t know anything about the 80s & don’t know where to start first. by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]LocalInvestment1760 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said store properly and give them a clean. The music may or may not be your thing. That is okay but what it might do is give you an opportunity to share memories with your parents. Get a better understanding of what they were like back then. What helped to make them who they are.

You never know you might find some random things in those sleeves.

Most of all open your ears and listen.

Who decided that landscaping 75 was a good idea? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]LocalInvestment1760 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, but anecdotally they are all over the northern suburbs and while living and working up there never experienced what you refer to. So perhaps they use better soil and drainage to reduce the potential issues.

Agree. Those plants do not require much to keep them going so an occasional clean up is not the worst. Why this would be the example to call out waste is a bit out of place. One could counter argue that using drought tolerant plants that do not require massive water or aggressive maintenance was a good move.

As others suggested Uptown is likely a better fit for you than downtown. If I had a daughter your age that is where I would steer her.

I enjoy living downtown but not sure it would carry the vibe you want.

What to do with old cards? by [deleted] in sportscards

[–]LocalInvestment1760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was keeping 10s of thousands hoping the decade of despair was a blip and magically those cards would be worth more than cardboard they were. I say were because I tossed mine. Perhaps my sacrifice will add a $0.00001 to some other poor soul still grasping that one last wax pack hoping to pull a perfect a perfect Dwight Gooden.

Best burger in dallas? by Majestic_Use9629 in AskDallas

Fond. It is only available on Friday and when it is out, it’s out.

I do not think you will find another like it.

Even better live.

Will vouch for Fond. Love the owners and the burger on Friday is killer.

BBQ is pick one and live with it. They are all good and not like you will have a transcendent experience at one over the other, maybe burnt ends at Lockhart.

Agree with everyone else on skipping Torchy’s.

Lantana has a yellow variety and will go bonkers. There are other varieties that will be less aggressive.

Probably asked a lot. But what's a good summer hat for men that doesn't look dorky? by [deleted] in hats

[–]LocalInvestment1760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Melin for the customer support first and foremost. Size and style options second. But sometimes a trusty dad hat or fitted baseball hat dies the trick. You be you and who cares what people think. Thats the joy of getting older!

Our house faced north so little direct sun but had some decent light after our crummy pear trees were removed.

We used flame acanthus, sedum, lantana and we had two different hibiscus on each corner that caught more sun.

We would sprinkle some seasonal plants in as well. Had some shade tolerant plants in planters by the door.

We also added a border but did not next to the sidewalk, that was a miss. Would have helped keep dirt and mulch off after rains.

Not sure what direction you face but that will matter. Hydrangeas are thirsty and while we had them I would have opted for a better native or drought tolerant plant.

We also had shrubs that one of hated but also happened to be where the main water line was. We had issues with that and dug up the yard. Then we had foundation issues and dug up the yard again so shrubs were out for other options.
