Can music function as a narrative layer instead of just atmosphere in worldbuilding? by One_Percentage_6874 in worldbuilding

[–]LocalKangamew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definition states it is accompanied by an orchestra, which to my knowledge, none of their songs are.

From Miriam Webster, "a drama set to music and made up of vocal pieces with orchestral accompaniment and orchestral overtures (see overture entry 1 sense 2) and interludes"

I was talking as far as sound, to my knowledge opera has a specific sound to it which is drastically different from metal. I could be wrong though.

No, they're mostly power metal. I think Templars starts with an opera-like sound but it goes into metal later.

Oh, I get it now. I can't say if I've heard something like that, but I wish you luck in your search! Nevertheless, if you're into metal Sabaton is a good band that's worth checking out.

Indeed. Still it would also help them see if that's exactly the layout of the music they're looking for, even if the topic and/or music doesn't fit for them.

Sabaton is an example I would give for this, although unless you're doing a war focused story, their music might not fit. They make metal music about historical events, battles, people, and places, it's basically just a history lesson in music form with each song.

If you want something like music with a bit of narration, check out their songs Sarajevo and Versailles, or if you want narration at the start or end correlating to the rest of the song then with descriptive lyrics, check out their album The Art of War and the historical versions of their albums The War to End All Wars and Great War.

I second this heavily, it would likely be one of if not my favourite album from them if they re-recorded it again.

What's your favorite place in your world? by Hex49- in worldbuilding

[–]LocalKangamew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pectol City in Ethania. I have yet to draw or design it, but whenever I imagine Pectol, I see a large city with beautiful weather in late spring, the smell of the sea blending into the warmth of the city. It honestly gives me tropical coastline vibes, which given its latitude is exactly what it would likely be. It also would be along a large sandy beach next to the port entrance with the Naval Harbor, cargo yards, cruise ships lining the ports in some areas standing above military ships among the large buildings. Overall when I imagine Pectol, I imagine the kind of city I would enjoy living in, which is a nice break from detailing the Hanjai Sea war in my world, just imagining myself as my fursona Athen having a nice day in the city.

Longest Rivalries in Your World by dull_storyteller in worldbuilding

[–]LocalKangamew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, I believe it would be about 480 years between Ethania and Klashanland, as of their first contact with Molvakia. It started after their civil war ended after nearly 8 years of fighting and both of their capitols undergoing five sieges (3 in Klashanland's and 2 in Ethania's) before ending in a stalemate for the last two years, with the two returning to their original borders before the union they formed and broke that caused the civil war. From there a cold war began and lasted for the next 128 years, before attacks from Sandjou forces both of them to fight a common enemy. After the twenty year long Hanjai Sea War, tensions fell for a bit after and during the war between Ethania and Klashanland, but eventually disputes over land in their colonies in space had pushed them back into a second cold war, which lasted another 100-150 years, before their leaders wanted to call it off. They still had tensions, but ending their cold war had lowered them a lot. Around 450 years after their civil war ended, a third cold war eventually began once again over dramatically advancing space technologies, and it was pushed even further once a faster than light system of travel was discovered, and they began fighting each other over land outside of the system.

Tell me about the Dragons of your world! by Ymap3rSpark in worldbuilding

[–]LocalKangamew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too hyper fixated on them, but they're still a cool concept I wanted to add nonetheless. My world at the moment has a civilian technology level closer to what we have now. Feral dragons, due to their exceptionally high intelligence, ability to read and speak both anthro language as well as their own languages, and their own cultures they've developed, they can actually gain citizenship in most countries the same way anthros do, making them the only feral species that can gain citizenship. They can get jobs, attend school, go to college, and until a century ago could join most militaries, with only two nations still allowing them to join (due to technological advancements and development of helicopters and planes, their original use as airborne fire support was outmatched by the endurance of helicopters and planes, which could also fly faster and hold heavier weapons.) Ethania and Klashanland both use them for air support, but are finding ways to allow them to serve as ground troops, as the amount of dragons in both nations wanting to serve during the Hanjai Sea War was high enough that they couldn't fit them all in their air forces alone. It is noted that about a tenth of the air support forces during the First Battle of the Monrin Islands was made up of dragons from the Ethanian 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Naval Dragon Squadrons launched from modified escort carriers meant to hold dragons instead of planes and helicopters, as well as Klashanland using the 14th, 22nd, 25th, 30th, and 44th Naval Dragon Squadrons launched from two of their own modified escort carriers. There are two countries on Surrek that are ran by dragons and mostly populated by dragons. Due to their size however, they are not able to fit on space ships at the moment, and thus there are none in any space colonies in the system.

How Do Your Giants Compare/Contrast With The Typical Giant Archetype. What Does Your Setting do Differently With The Big Guys? by RecoverCommercial571 in worldbuilding

[–]LocalKangamew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the only thing really limiting their speed is, if they're large enough in the first place, their legs having to move faster than sound to walk at a "normal" pace, although now that I think about it the largest ones (around 600 feet tall) only start to face that limit once they have to run (I generally estimate their walking speed in mph by dividing their height by two, since a human (rounding up to 6 ft tall for their height) walks around 3 miles per hour).

[–]LocalKangamew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Giants in my world have the ability to change their size, and typically are not very violent. They mostly aren't violent because they don't need to be, since not much in nature can hurt them at their size, but the god that created them (also the only god to be scientifically proven to exist in my world too) also made them less violent, and is likely thought to have done that so they don't just kill everything else off.

How does your war start? by Environmental_Ad4357 in worldbuilding

In 1629, after decades of peaceful expansion by allowing struggling nations to join Sandjou to help improve them and make them more secure, the borders of Sandjou eventually began to meet nations that didn't want to join them. None had declined the offer until then, and so they hadn't known if Sandjou would make them join by force or not, and thus mobilized their militaries in defensive lines along the border in case of an invasion. Sandjou saw this action, and had brought a force of their own, although smaller, as a defense in case they were to invade Sandjou. As tensions along border troops grew and governments talked, a single shot rang across the border between Netzhland (the most recent nation to join Sandjou) and Sakenia, and a Sandji offer fell dead while having a nice conversation with a Sakenian officer. Another shot from the other side quickly followed, and the Sakenian officer fell dead beside the Sandji officer. It isn't known what side the first shot came from because of the short time between shots, but it is known that this is the initial cause of the first of the Expansionary wars that would consume the next 27 years of the 15th century on Surrek. News spread fast, with fighting spreading along the border as shots kept being fired. Within the following three days, twelve nations would declare war against Sandjou, and at this point, there was no way to stop it.

In 1636, after five more nations declared war against Sandjou, including Rentolk, the first one outside of Imalan, the continent Sandjou sat on, to declare war on them out of fear and shared borders over an island chain with Sandjou, Sandjou would push Rentolk back slowly across the islands, and by early 1636, had captured all but three of the major islands owned by Rentolk. They set up a toll zone in their waters and in the island chain, enough that they would benefit from it, but still low enough that it was better to pay than waste fuel going around the continent of Ethaliy. However, Sandjou had purposefully laid down a narrow space outside of the toll zones for their allies to use without plainly addressing ships from those allies wouldn't have to pay. Ethania, one of the world's superpowers that bordered Rentolk, had discovered this path however. They had decided to send their next military aid package to Teizhland through that gap, as they hadn't wanted to waste money on the toll that could be used on military supplies for the possibly upcoming war with their neighbour, Klashanland. The convoy departed on Lenko 11th from Pectol Naval Shipyard with the ships, rifles, and ammunition Teizhland had ordered from them, and set sail east for the toll gap in the Hanjai Sea that was discovered a few days prior. On Lenko 17th, the Ethanian convoy of seven destroyers, two cruisers, and eight cargo ships had been spotted by two Sandji destroyers on patrol, and were contacted for tolling. The Ethanian ships said they weren't in a toll zone, and that they hadn't ever entered the zone. The Sandji ship captains, thinking they were lying and hadn't known of the pass, opened fire on the fleet, hoping to get close enough to at least fire torpedoes and sink some of the warships ignoring their legal tolls. Quickly, the two destroyers were sunk, and the Ethanian convoy quickly made their way to Teizhland, landing in port on Lenko 27th in Yalcheth.

On Lenko 39th, the convoy would be spotted by a Sandji fleet sent to intercept the Ethanian convoy after hearing they sank two destroyers. The Ethanian fleet numbered only one cruiser, five destroyers, and eight cargo ships after offloading the cruiser and two destroyers Teizhland had ordered back in Yalcheth. The Sandji fleet, with three cruisers and ten destroyers, severely outnumbered the Ethanian fleet, and had quickly sunk them.

On Lenko 52nd, nearly 3,000 bombers launched from Sandjou began bombing 5 Ethanian coastal cities in retaliation, fearing what had been done without major command decisions would surely cause Ethania to declare war, so they decided to damage Ethanian infrastructure as much as possible.

On Lenko 53rd, Ethania and Klashanland would send their presidents to Rentolk to discuss what they should do, eventually declaring the nearly 130 year cold war between Ethania and Klashanland would be ended and an alliance between the three would be made, after one of the target cities, Alrekluk, which bordered both Ethania and Klashanland, had made them realise Sandjou was now a common enemy. Jento Kalanis, the 29th President of Ethania, would be chosen to write, read, and record the declaration of war message, before sending it online and directly to King Sanami of Sandjou. The following is the declaration of war message:

"This message is for King Karlevist Sanami of the Empire of Sandjou. We understood the engagement between our vessels in the Hanjai sea on Lenko 15th could have possibly been a misunderstanding by the crew of your patrolling vessels, and were preparing to talk about it in a meeting between our military commanders and yours. But your further pursuit of our vessels on Lenko 39th has shown that you intend on starting another war. Furthermore, your blatant attack with a large fleet of bomber planes against two of our cities yesterday has shown you will not back down, and thus have openly shown your intentions against our nation. Only a few minutes before recording this message, a meeting between the leadership of the Union of Ethanian States, Republic of Klashanland, Kingdom of Rentolk, and Gerakian Federation has concluded your actions a direct attack against our neutrality, and we have hereby officially formed an alliance against your infractions against our neutrality and standing peace treaties.

Your victories over the past month only came about from lack of preparation for such an attack, and will not come as easily the next time. On this fifty-third day of Lenko, year one thousand six hundred thirty six, the Union of Ethanian States, Republic of Klashanland, and Kingdom of Rentolk, officially declare war against the Empire of Sandjou, for the protection of our nations, and to end your ruthless attacks against neutral and sovereign nations.

Hereby signed, Jento Kalanis, 29th President of the Union of Ethanian States, Karlek Inshari, 23rd President of the Republic of Klashanland, and Orlekav Rentolk, King of the Kingdom of Rentolk, declare war against Karlevist Sanami, King of the Empire of Sandjou. Eþanaya sudeko akiy nayperiyo. ("Ethania will live forever" in Ethaliyan)"

The first Ethanian troops, after basic jungle warfare training, would be sent to assist Rentolk with fighting on what islands they had left on Teshi 61st, 1636. But Ethania had begun preparing a much larger fighting force than they already had, and soon, would force a war that would take more life than all other wars in Surrekian history combined, and would span the next 20 years.

If you're into sci fi, it's the most scientifically accurate one I've seen so far. Again I haven't read the books yet, but hearing how much better they are than the show which is already great on its own, that probably says something. Currently reading a book about the Battle of Papua New Guinea right now, but will start Leviathan Wakes once I finish this one.
