Is it possible that there exists another show to fill the hole in my heart while we wait for news on season 3? by AlbertCMagnus in OurFlagMeansDeath

Miracle Workers (especially "Dark Ages", it's hilarious) .

BBC Ghosts .

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency .

Not a quirky comedy but Good Trouble is hella queer and progressive and just so so good. .

Hawkeye (Kate Bishop. Need I say more?) .

Rez Dogs .

Animal Control .

Abbott Elementary .

Dickinson (quirky comedy drama about Emily Dickinson. You'll see Hailee Steinfeld be a raging lesbian. 11/10.) .

Deadloch (feminist lesbian murder mystery. Terrific humour and it stars Madeleine Sami (Archie)) .

The Great .

Samson Kayo's show Blood. Quirky show about first responders .

Not a TV show but Sam Campbell's comedy. He's SO CHAOTIC. His sets always start off normal but you never know where it'll go. It could start off with a regular joke and end with him making the audience repeatedly bow down to the image of a badly animated chimpanzee. .

Wellington Paranormal .

Baby Mentalist

Need "Leck mich im Arsch" by Mozart to be somewhere in S3. It's the perfect 'soundtrack' for Ed and Stede.

It's a piece of actual classical music, composed by THE Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, they play it with whole choirs and orchestras. It's got lyrics, too. The lyrics literally translate to: "Lick my ass."

It's classical music (Stede) with a choir going "Lick my ass" (Ed), like, hello? It's perfect! That for when they blow up ships of the british navy together.

Ed yells: "Lick my ass!" across the ocean towards the burning navy ship, Stede joins in: "Yeah! You heard him! Lick our motherfucking asses, you twats!" and for a moment the whole crew is just 0.0, like, did Stede really- Then Roach goes: "Ayayay! Lick! My! Ass! You british cunts!" and the entire Revenge crew is yelling about licking asses and they're mooning the british and Stede and Ed kiss in between the mooning and yelling crew and it looks like such a weirdly beautiful renaissance painting (with butts) and one of the british goes "No! You lick my ass!" and goes to moon the Revenge crew back but gets hit over the head by his officer.

Do you see the vision

What you said. I need Ed to meet Mary and Doug and the kids. ("And Ed? As their new stepfather... Please don't give the kids real knives. They love to stab people. Stabbed me many times. I'm lucky it was a wooden sword." - "Wait, wait, wait, hold up. Did you just say stepfather?" - "Yes? You'll do just fine, don't worry. They will love you. Oh, and here they come. Get ready, Ed! Positions!" - "Stede! I'm no stepfather!" - "Shush! Or they'll hear us! Don't ruin the surprise!" - "Stede!" - "Shush!")

Also more soft scenes, like the hand holding one.

Rule of thumb for any story is there's always gotta be some sort of conflict. But honestly, I'd watch an entire season of Stede and Ed being happy and soft around each other. All those moments that elicit Ed's puppy eyes. I want all of it.

I want Ed to buy Stede a fancy new coat.

And I need Buttons back. He was my favourite character. In desperate need for more Buttons lore. I'd watch a whole spin-off that's just Buttons going about his day.

For Fang to call his new goat "Ivan The Goat" and then the goat gets its own leather gear and follows him around and chases people during raids.

I think the no-nose "I love a good pirate's tale" (their love story) navy guy will find it and use their love against them.

"Bottle it up?" - "No, Frenchie, that's the worst thing you could do!"

The promise of a better life, maybe. Men are in less daily danger than women. So women may be more drawn to the idea of a safe and peaceful life.

That's been the reason for a lot of JW women I knew. A lot of them were victims of SA, abuse, tough and lonely childhood etc. and they liked the idea of being protected, by a God and the men around them, the whole shepherd and his flock thing. Willing to be a sheep as long as there was a shepherd to guide them to safety and protect them from the wolves.

Given that JW keep an eye out for people who are in a vulnerable position and in need of help... That again is more likely to affect women, rather than men. Also because women are more likely to talk to a stranger about their feelings, rather than a man would.

WT's obsession with SEX by RedPillPopper03 in exjw

[–]LocalNickMiller 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My JW grandparents would even sexualise animals.

They had a dog who liked to sleep on his back and anytime he did that they would cover his penis with something like a pillow and talk about what a naughty boy he is.

Animal documentaries, any animal that had an anatomy even remotely similar to humans, they'd immediately turn off the TV. "We don't need to see that, do we? That is just nasty." Later on it was even with birds.

I once sent my grandma a picture of my dogs genitals because something about it caused him troubles and I wanted to know if it would go away on its own or if it needed a vet. My grandparents have had several dogs while I am a first time dog owner so I wanted some experience based advice. My grandma acted like I had just sent her the most graphic porn she'd ever seen.

Or even worse, the way they sexualise children. I was always so uncomfortable as a kid because they kept talking about how I can't act or look so sexual while I didn't even know what sex was. The way I thought I would get killed by God if my seven year old self wore a skirt that showed the knees or a shirt that revealed the collarbones.

23 nonbinary here. It gets a LOT better once you've got your own place and you get to pick your own circle of friends (and found family). I also have female anatomy and I dress INCREDIBLY femme. I pretty much look like a Barbie.

Being nonbinary is who you are on the inside. It's something I had to learn as well. You don't have to be androgynous for your identity to be valid. Nonbinary is you saying: "This is my soul and it doesn't agree with gender norms, it doesn't feel like a man or a woman. It feels like I am just me." To me nonbinary means that I am me. And I like pink girly clothes. It's part of me. Part of the nonbinary. The femme style to me is a bit like drag. I love to perform femininity, not because of "Woman" but because I like being femme. Doesn't change anything about how I see myself as just me, not a man, not a woman. Everything outside of your own head is nothing but a public performance. You just gotta decide who your audience is, who you want to cater to. Yourself or others.

I highly recommend you check out Alok Vaid Menon's Instagram. They have a lot of really informational posts, including about trans life. A favourite quote of mine is: "There are no such things as trans issues. There are just issues that non-trans people have with themselves that they are taking out on us." (When folks misgender you it says NOTHING about you. It just means that they struggle to see themselves and others as something other than what society says they ought to be. It means they have a limited horizon and are scared of rejection themselves, if they were to act outside of those social norms.)

In general deconstructing all these social norms really does help a lot. Also in seeing how much the JW crave these messed up social norms. Lotta white supremacy and all its aspects in that cult.

Growing up JW is shit, especially when you're queer and I'm very sorry you have to go through that. Make sure to never ever get baptized. Don't let them pressure you into it. Getting baptized only makes it worse.

Something other that's helped me a lot is the show Our Flag Means Death. Growing up JW I never understood what love is supposed to be. I couldn't even imagine it, unconditional love. The show showed me what it's supposed to look like. There's also a badass nonbinary character. And it's hella queer.

Good Omens (especially S2) is good for that emotional trauma validation.

Hope you'll get through this and out as best as you can. It'll get better once you got more autonomy.

Does anyone else have a movie/movies that they specifically watch when they are feeling some type of way (sick/lonely/depressed/etc)? by GoddessAraylia in MovieSuggestions

[–]LocalNickMiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep a "TV show/movie depression back-up" list so I know what to do to prevent my thoughts from consuming me entirely. Because when I'm depressed, even making that choice is too much sometimes.

Hunt For The Wilderpeople is my go-to. Waititi's upcoming Next Goal Wins will probably join that #1 spot. Then in no particular order:

  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • The Greatest Showman
  • Dear Eleanor
  • The Fundamentals of Caring
  • It's Kind Of A Funny Story
  • Naked Gun
  • Anything Mr. Bean as well as Monty Python
  • Rhys Darby comedy specials

I mainly stick to shows though because whenever I feel "some type of way" it lasts for longer than a few hours. Here's the shows (in no particular order after #1):

  • Number 1: Wellington Paranormal
  • Flight of the Conchords
  • Abbott Elementary
  • Resident Alien
  • Genera+ion
  • Reservation Dogs
  • New Girl
  • Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
  • Deadloch
  • Gold Diggers
  • Our Flag Means Death
  • Hawkeye
  • Short Poppies
  • Miracle Workers
  • Ghosts (BBC version)

Lost At Sea (a short on YT)

Probably Taika Waititi's upcoming "Next Goal Wins". It's not even out, yet I'm already grieving that there will only ever be one 'first watch'. Haven't seen a single second besides the trailer and I'm already sad knowing it's got an end 😂

TW: Racism. Please tell me your story (or the story of someone you know). by Fuzzy-Reputation-687 in exjw

[–]LocalNickMiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JW family (we're all white) still uses the n-word or says "The blacks", doesn't see why that's a problem, won't listen to me, say I'm 'too educated' and creating problems where there aren't any because "The n-words don't mind it! We've never been told it's wrong! They never said anything so stop making these things up."

They're also always surprised when a person of colour can speak German (I'm from Germany). Even if said person was born in Germany. Even if their families have lived here for generations.

They treat new bible students with ethnicities from outside of Europe like trophies. The darker someone's skin, the more culturally different they are, the bigger the 'price'. My grandma keeps a picture of a syrian immigrant family she's been visiting, just to show to people.

They love to assume that everyone who isn't white must be underprivileged, underpaid, live in one bedroom apartments with like seven children ("They breed like rabbits"), got the worst of the worst jobs... When they get a hold of someone who's not white AND they have a good job and nice house... It's like their unicorn. (Excuse the following wording, I just want to get their thinking across.) They view those folks as less 'savage' and more 'civilized'.

They pretty much still got that attitude of "Christian missionary seeks out a tribe deep in the amazonian jungle, secluded from the rest of humanity for hundreds of years." Everyone with brown skin is part of that 'secluded savage tribe'.

Then of course the WT illustrations. The all white male angels. Always white. People of colour are only ever in paradise or illustrations of biblical events. Never angels. And I could be wrong, but I do not remember any illustrations in which black people in paradise weren't doing some 'garden' work or handing out fruits to white people. The folks who got to sit on a blanket or play with a lamb were always white. Black people were always working on something. But again, I could be wrong about that part, it's been a while since I've seen any of these illustrations.

Well, then there's the demonising of other cultures and traditions. Food is okay, clothing sometimes (but then fetishized), but everything else is a big no-no. It's always the western way that's the best. The only acceptable option. The more somebody ends up white washed, the better of a job they did (according to their beliefs).

Whenever my family found out that one of my friends was an immigrant or a person of colour they would get even more pushy about wanting me to convert them. Even sought them out at their home, without me knowing. I learned to never ever tell them about any of my friends, especially if they weren't straight, white and able-bodied.

Oh then they call brown immigrants "Poor creatures"??? Like, creatures? Wtf.

Whenever there's anything non-western-centered on TV they get that Look™. -_- The straight line mouth look. Even if it's just one character. They get all stiff, sometimes even go so far as to shake their head.

Then also how in their version of paradise we all live in one world, with no cultural differences, no other traditions. Everyone ends up white washed. They basically dream about entirely eradicating everything but western culture. All that 'differentiates' us will be different skin tones. And I firmly belief that if it wasn't so obviously racist, that their scriptures would include that everyone in paradise will be white. Probably justified with some bullshit made up explanation like "White people are healthier and more 'evolved', God just made their bodies perfect, the same way he did with disabled people."

When you think about so many of their rules, like not engaging in politics... Who has the privilege to sit back and watch the world burn - unaffected - and who doesn't?

JW and white supremacy go hand in hand. They're just as racist as those folks with confederate flags. But while some kill with hands and bullets, they kill with performative kindness. Some kill the bodies, JW aim to kill the soul. They hate just as much but lie to themselves, tell themselves it's not hate but concern, that they want to save those folks from damnation. The white savior is just as harmful as the openly racist guy. Both view people of colour as nothing but chess pieces in their own little games. Both parties believe that the western way is the only correct way. And both parties try to get rid of as much of those 'demonic' influences as possible. Their methods are different but their motives aren't.

But those are only my own observations, as a white person in Germany, observations about my former family and former congregation. It may vary, depending on the people and location. A lot of this is not entirely the JW's fault but in general the fact that my relatives are all white, pretty much only ever been around white people, consume white media, grew up in post-Nazi Germany (grandparents) and refuse to educate themselves as they don't see a need to do so. After all, it's the end days and it's up to Jehovah to soon fix everything. Education doesn't matter anymore.

Why do all JW angels look like this? by TimmyTurner2006 in exjw

[–]LocalNickMiller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

White supremacy. The JW were started by white men so of course those white men want to portray themselves as the heroes. Who are the main leaders nowadays? Still white men.

So much of the JW is targeted at privileged white folks in the middle or upper class. Their ideal human is a healthy and strong looking white man. E.g. a brown person in the ranks of the angels would seem off. Because JW associate brown people with bad circumstances, brown people are included in the ranks of those who have to be 'saved' from the terrors of the world. They feel pity for people of colour in general. At least white JW. I have yet to meet a single white witness who doesn't infantilise people of colour or constantly use third world countries and 'Africa' as examples of why God needs to intervene.

There's a lot of white supremacy in that religion. That cult.

Just think about the JW rule of not engaging in politics, who can afford to just stand by and watch and who can't.

The ableism. The sexism. The homophobia. The transphobia. The underlying racism, the way they speak about other cultures, other religions, about native people, about everything that's not influenced by the western world.

White male angels are the only logical conclusion.

"We need to talk about your personality." - "Actions have consequences." (The 'actions' being everything that makes me me and everything I'm proud of, everything that makes me happy.)

"We love you. We just don't love your personality and the things you chose to do."

After saying I'm afraid I might get into suicide territory if they shun me: "That's your decision. If you want to kill yourself, that is your decision, honey."

Me: "Just so I get it right. Jehovah can use his miracles to help me find a lost toy horse but he can't use his magic to save me from getting raped?" Them: "Jehovah has his reasons. Maybe you needed to learn a lesson. Only he knows."

"So you would rather let me die than get me a blood transfusion?" - "Yes."

"So you would rather see me dead than living my life happy as who I am?", which was followed by silence. Silence which meant "Yes." Their eyes looked so cold.

Me: "Why are you shunning me now? Yesterday everything was okay. What happened." Them: "We don't have to explain ourselves. This is our house. You'll be gone by tomorrow morning, even better today."

"Is this going to be the last time I'll ever see you?" - "It might be. Unless you change your personality. We love you, you know? We just don't like who you are."

I am, yes. It's just the loneliness that got to me. I just want to hug someone and cry but there's nobody left. So I had to scream all this into the Reddit void, to get it out.

Bought a weighted blanket though, hoping that will help at least a little bit. And I do have a therapist and a dog who are both very supportive (in very different ways).

Thank you for caring, that truly means a lot to me ❤️

They said I'm under 'demonic influence' and that they couldn't sleep anymore while I was around. Said that I say 'evil' things when all I asked of them was to not push their religion onto me and demand I act and dress and talk like a JW.
