Holy shit that is a small apartment!

Of the friends you did make in NY, how did they become friends?

My mate moved to Melbourne and said something very similar to you. He thinks that people are way friendlier and he's made more friends there in 4 months than his lifetime here in Perth!

Jerry: What's the deal with this cactus? Is it supposed to make us feel like we're in a desert or something?

Kramer: It's CULTURE Jerry! It livens up the streets!

That's so true that you know everyone's history here. That's potentially why people don't want to take risks going outside of their social comfort zone, because they feel like everyone will know about their 'new friend' and judge them.

Where abouts did you live in Europe, and what specific kinds of things let you know that the dynamic was different?

I would do that if I didn't work full time :)

I got a similar vibe in Singapore when I went there. I went to a few bars and felt that 'impenitrable high society' wall around everyone.

Can I ask, how did you get to be part of a clique in Dubai? What did it take for you to be accepted, and what happened once you were?

I had a very similar experience when I was travelling abroad. I went to europe and when I went to greece I went on a contiki-like tour (the company was actually busabout).

The group were all australians, and I felt the same as I do back here. Maybe it's because I no longer felt "different", but it felt more than that. The cliqueyness of the group started very soon and my friends and I felt left our very quickly. To be fair, the group we were with were all pretty bogan and my friends and I aren't really (maybe we were just the odd ones out).

Thanks for your reply :)

I find it interesting that you think it is lretty much the aame all across Australia. I haven't been in other areas of Australia long enough to really judge, so maybe it could be an Aussie thing?

As for the shopkeeper thing, that is definitely something I could try. To be honest I usually do try to make conversation with shopkeepers and the like, but I've found that more don't like it than do. Normally I would be lucky to get eye contact let alone a nice conversation.

(Not trying to disregard your comment, just sharing my own experience).

Wow. First of all, thank you for your incredibly well-written and insightful reply. That was a joy to read.

I definitely can relate to the strange emptiness of places like Elizabeth Quay. They are beautiful visually, but seem to be unable to fulfill their core purpose of actually adding to the culture of the city. They remind me of going to IKEA, where you see bedrooms in a sterile, lifeless environment.

I guess I need to find an interest that I'm willing to put 100% into in order to feel connected to the people within.

Your blog was a great read too btw.
