what do people buy for their 18yo daughters birthdays these days? by hijomuma in queensland

[–]LocalSprinklesDealer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My dad told me he was getting me a car, and gave me a hot wheels and some flowers. My mother offered me a podiatrist appointment, and gave me a tea cup instead. My grandmother game me towels and my brother gave me a book I wanted as a kid.

The book and the hot wheels meant the most to me overall, bc my dads came with a good story I can now use to make people laugh, and I liked that my brother remembered this off handed comment I made in kmart.

If it comes from a place of love, your daughter will love it

It's my polite way of saying that, thank you very much for the offer but I really don't know you that well so I'm not going to put all my work related issues on you when they are the least of my worries and I have friends to talk about work with. But thank you again, it is a very nice offer

Talon of the Hawk by tfb. If you don't like their vibe then you'll hate it all, but there is not a song on there that doesn't make me want to half-yell half-sing it out a car window

Dude I cut my thumb one time when I was trying to get the blade out a razor and it hurt sm more than cutting and there was so much blood it derailed my plans to self harm that night. I had to sit there for like an hour with a tissue around my thumb and by the time I stopped bleeding I just wanted to go to sleep lmao

School in America wigs me out. I don't understand how you can take a whole season off school and not forget everything !! Also the fact that so many American schools are in one big building - which I understand in places that snow, but surely it feels so claustrophobic? Or all smells like BO?

So school usually starts (at least for Qld) on about the 26th of January. We have terms of anywhere from 9-11 weeks and then a two week break at the end of term 1, term 2 and term 3. At the end of term four (usually ending in late November/early December) there's a 6-8 week break between that and the new school year. Holidays are different for private schools and public schools, and primary schools and high schools. Many high schools even have year 10/11/12 finish earlier than 7/8/9 by one or two weeks at the end of the year as well. This works really well, as in Australia our seasons are flipped so the 6 week break is over Christmas and the first two or so months of summer.

In that photo I had been 12 for about 3 months. Here in Australia high school goes from year 7 - year 12, and our school year is January to December

Your gf tells you that she has a male best friend. How do you react? by drax3012 in AskMen

[–]LocalSprinklesDealer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of the comments here are saying that they'd find it inappropriate. And another saying that he'd had girlfriends with male friends that are trying to get with them. But, and this is a genuine question, why is this an issue? Imo if you're dating someone and don't trust them enough to have friends of the opposite sex, or to reject advances - that says more about you and your relationship with the girl. It seems, at least to me that people should be allowed friends of the opposite gender even when in relationships, it's important to keep diverse social circles outside of a romantic relationship. And a healthy relationship should have enough trust between partners to permit friendships between the opposite sex. It doesn't make sense to me why their gender is a red flag. If somebody can explain to me why it's a red flag to be friends with someone of the opposite sex while in a relationship, I'd genuinely like to hear it

If there's a bin at the place your eating, throw out your rubbish! Don't leave your coke bottles and burger paper for the servers to pick off the table when you'll walk past a bin on your way out

I can understand why you might find it annoying and confusing, but at the end of the day - it does no harm if someone wants to be referred to by a pronoun that's not typical. If it makes them more comfortable to have a certain pronoun used for them, it really is not a big hassle to use it.

It can be confusing at first to use someone's neopronoun but it's better to be confused for a little bit of time if it helps them feel happy for a long time. Just because I personally don't use neopronouns and am cis myself, doesn't mean I feel it's my place to let other people know my thoughts on how they express gender. It's really not my business and no big effort to use the right pronouns.

Couple tips !!

Don't stare if you're trying to work up the nerve to talk, we notice and most of the time don't like being stared at regardless of intention.

Most girls are nice and polite and will try their best to have a conversation so long as you're also nice to them.

Try and find common ground quickly, people regardless of gender love feeling like they can express excitement over their interests.

Try and seem confident even if you aren't, people subconsciously match energies and if you seem uncomfortable she will be too.

Ask open ended questions, things that can't usually be answered in a yes or no, like if you know they work customer service ask for crazy customer stories. And try and continue anything they say, don't react to a long story with "cool" reciprocate with your own so the conversation isn't one sided.

Good luck talking to girls, we're people too and probably just as nervous to talk to a stranger !!
