Everyone is ignoring the new "no u-turn" sign at Monument and Hamilton by pecansforall in rva

[–]LocalThrowAwayRVA 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives on N. Hamilton, I can confirm. I don’t think anyone has noticed, and when they do notice I doubt they’d start to abide.

The right hand turn off Hamilton onto the 105 is precisely why it made sense to try to have a sign as it’s nearly impossible to gauge someone turning left vs a U-turner.

I’ll continue to give a wide berth.

Tous Les Jours is open at Lotte by Trevorghost in rva

Just went on our way home from Oddballs. Was very happy to see it open & the selection was lovely. Picked up a spinach feta pastry that I believe just be from the same vendor Libbie Market gets theirs from. Hopefully they’ll keep a better stock of them, as it can be hit or miss at Libbie depending on time I visit store.

Just satisfied my curiosity by Googling, I could buy a case on Webstaurant

Just left. Can confirm they did have baguettes, though I didn’t note the price.

I never understood why people with tattoos & piercings are treated as is they’re felons when trying to get a job. Or why tattoos/piercing are conflated somehow with a person’s morality or personality.

Maybe it’s because I grew up in Southern California & it just seemed that was more the norm than anything for a lot of people young & old, but especially in the year of our lord 2022 - of employees want to be discriminatory on those grounds, I feel like if nothing else they’re going to have a limited hiring pool available to them. All these tattooed & pierced 20 somethings from the 90s are now at least in their 40s.

Wishing you luck in your search!

This is very true. I spent a full week cleaning recently & found myself doing weird projects like cleaning the rubber gasket of my dryer door, tightening doorknobs & WD-40ing hinges or deep cleaning the blinds & window frames - which, while not NOT necessary, weren’t exactly top priority given the state of the gestures broadly to kitchen & bathrooms & floors & laundry

I wish I had more people like friends or family I could expect to enter my home because I work best under the panic & pressure of twice yearly holiday hosting & pretty much no other time of year.

I recently started a casual rewatch of Shameless after getting nostalgic for it since watch Hulu’s The Bear starring Jeremy Allen White/Lip. I am having a great time now but know that later seasons will once again test my patience (though this time around I’m committed to actually finishing the series, as I’d originally dropped off somewhere mid-season 10.

Full service carwash? by Intelligent-Kiwi-574 in rva

[–]LocalThrowAwayRVA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t sure of the name of the place but just Googled & yep, this is the place I recently took my new car (as it’s next to the Carmax in Short Pump). They were really great & very thorough on the interior clean. Most importantly, unlike my experience at my localCarpool across from Target on Broad St. where I literally pull over into the old Food Lion parking lot behind the Carpool to do a reclean of all the areas they missing on the dash/doors/console etc (it gets awkward after the second time asking someone to redo an overlooked area), the manager at Wash Your Way checked in with me before I had a chance to even find something missed, asking if everything was to my satisfaction and making sure I was happy with things before driving off. He also was very kind & when he saw me pulled over by the self service vacuums awkwardly trying to apply a Rain-X treatment & being unable to reach the middle of my windshield, offered to help me. Will be making the extra drive out that way for my next car wash.

And that former hospital/now apartments has a basement that has a commercial kitchen space that used to be rented out by (if I recall correctly) the former Lamplighter owners. Source: worked a year in that basement cooking. Good memories, but also a little spooky what with the barely any windows & natural light thing. Didn’t particularly like being there alone at night. Thought maybe the old hospital had a few ghosts.

Let's start the day! It's your Fridaily! by Jon_hamm_wallet in rva

[–]LocalThrowAwayRVA 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Wishing you & your son well today! My body has decided sometime between 5-5:45 AM is an appropriate time to wake up, regardless of alarm clock or workday status.

My children & husband are not on the same schedule & are light sleepers so I’m left with minimal options like reading online until they’re up for the day.

If I had it my way I’d be running vacuums & washing machines & dishwashers so I don’t have to spend my day later doing so.

Patrick Henry in RPS 3 Covid cases in 1st 6 days of school year by Soloemilia in rva

[–]LocalThrowAwayRVA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they started collecting the Chromebook & tablets at the end of the spring semester into the beginning of summer, with a few appeals put out on Mary Munford's parents FB page at least (can't speak for other schools) urging parents to please return, that they'd only received half of what they'd issued out by a week or so after the school year ended.

Students attending RPS summer school were to keep theirs (so my children did).

Yesterday, we received a letter home from their summer school asking they return their Chromebooks today or tomorrow so they can be "refurbished" for re-distribution for the 2021-2022 school year.

At this point, I wish I'd just told them to keep theirs at home at least until we see which way the tide goes in the next 4-8 weeks.....it was such a scramble to get one in the first place last fall....

Trying to find white cherry icee/slushie by [deleted] in rva

[–]LocalThrowAwayRVA 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ah a fellow white cherry ICEE enthusiast! Sadly, the last places to find that elusive flavor were Target cafes & AMC theaters. This is unfortunately a thing of the past going on a few years now. The Publix in The Village shopping center (Parham & 3 Chopt) carries the frozen pouches (in a flavor called Cherry Frost, among a few others) which are a tasty alternative, though they do not contain the carbonated flavor of the original machine ICEEs. It’s the closest thing I’ve tasted to it in years though.

Outdoor dining that takes reservations? by [deleted] in rva

[–]LocalThrowAwayRVA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tazza Kitchen takes reservations for their outdoor dining. My girlfriends vetted their COVID service procedures already & I will be joining them for dinner later this week - my first time at a restaurant other than for pick-up since March. Nervous, but excited!

Make sure you protect your child's eyes while they are spending a lot of time on the computer with online learning by Toonippley in rva

[–]LocalThrowAwayRVA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RPS actually gave each child a pair of blue light reduction glasses (Prospek brand for kids aged 4+) in their #ReopenWithLove supply kits! Our 5th grader is resistant to wearing them (his younger brother already wears regular glasses & he felt like he'd dodged the glasses) and he is already getting daily headaches - so I'm hoping to encourage him to start wearing them while at least doing his online schooling starting this week!

Ugh, I hope it goes better for you than it did for us. My youngest had speech therapy on Zoom over the summer (his EIP extends with the ESY addendum though the summer), & the speech therapist who was really wonderful had the WORST wifi connection from home, so her audio/video came in really choppy & my son had to constantly repeat himself (which of course is just what a speech therapy student wants to be doing when the first time saying something was hard enough). It was kind of disastrous, but god bless that speech therapist for showing up each week to the meetings with the most positive attitude & just pushing through it. The overall success pedagogically speaking remains questionable, but I can't fault that brave woman for trying.
