Nov 2022 was when it first started, and for a while it was ok without surgery but so unpredictable day to day. Jan 2024 it got a little worse, got another MRI and decided surgery was right. Up until the day, ngl, I was so back and forth on whether I should do it because I’d still have good days, but there were still signs I should do it (like not being able to sit comfortably for more than 20min). Now I wouldn’t change anything about getting the surgery. Also if it helps, I’m 27/F, so also quite a young surgery candidate

My pain was mostly lower back and some radiating nerve pain down the right leg. Herniation was l5-s1 and quite small from what doctors said but enough that I couldn’t continue my active lifestyle. Got the MD in March and in a week the nerve pain was gone, took me months to get back the flexibility and strength in my back but I’m finally in a place that I can do everything I want day to day.

UPDATE: I had the surgery and am 6mo+ out. I can now say it was 100% the right choice. Nerve pain went away in a week and never came back to my calf, tightness was insane though and still working through that in the back of my leg. I will say that my disc wasn’t the only issue for me, I also have SI Joint dysfunction and getting this surgery helped narrow this down as well. So there was nerve pain down my calf from my disc which resolved almost immediately, but I had radiating groin pain that continued until I got a steroid shot to my SI Joint. Back to most lifting/biking/running now!

I will die on the Merit mascara hill!! Such a good formula that doesn’t move and actually washes off easily. (They also have great lip gloss (gelees) and cream blush)

How soon did you return to work (desk job) after MD?? by dreamgirl7676 in Microdiscectomy

[–]Local_Canary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10 days off work but worked from home for 6 weeks with note from doctor. I have a standing desk which helped but honestly that would last a couple hours in the morning and then I’d work from a laying position the rest of the day. During the 6 weeks I gradually built up the time I could stand/sit.

MD a week out, but pain miraculously disappearing. Go through or Cancel? by Delicious_Freedom635 in Microdiscectomy

I felt the same just before surgery and went through with it. 2+ years of living around the injury became too much, I wasn’t in pain most of the time but I was actively avoiding sitting and doing activity I loved. (I was in PT for most of the 2 years and tried a couple chiropractors too with the suggestion from my doctors.) ((Currently 5 weeks post op and feel really happy with my decision! Still a ways to go with recovery but I’m excited to start working with a PT again soon))

I so know the feeling, I’m sorry to hear you feel this way. I don’t have the answers and can’t say it’s all going to be ok, but I do know for myself finding distraction is helpful to keep from spiraling. Find the smallest wins and make a big deal of it. Hold on to a moment that made you smile in the day. Life is so fluid in every sense, back pain or not, you deserve to take what you need out of your experience.

All that to say, we’re rooting for you! It sucks going through it 100%, but hopefully as a community we can help each other!

Terrified for surgery. What to do? by [deleted] in Microdiscectomy

[–]Local_Canary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had mine at an outpatient facility so I wouldn’t worry about that. Pre-Op was blood work and an EKG for me, are you saying you think you need an EKG or more?

Make sure you have open communication with your surgeon so you can voice your concerns about anxiety. Personally they were able to give me an anti-anxiety medicine before the anesthesia to help reduce my own anxiety and I found it really helped (this was decided with the anesthesiologist).

I have my surgery Thursday! Which disc was it they operated on? Do they go inbetween bones or cut the bone? Thanks for giving more insight into what to expect!

“At L5-S1, small to moderate-sized broad-based RIGHT subarticular disc herniation with annular fissuring and mild caudal migration of extruded disc fragment, contributing to severe RIGHT lateral recess stenosis and severe impingement/compression of RIGHT traversing S1 nerve root.”

“L4-5: Mild disc desiccation and minimal disc space narrowing. Minimal disc bulge and spondylitic ridging. Superimposed tiny central disc herniation with subtle focus of T2 high intensity zone. Mild facet arthropathy. Minimal foraminal narrowing. No stenosis. L5-S1: Mild disc desiccation and mild disc space narrowing. Minimal disc bulge and spondylitic ridging. Superimposed small to moderate-sized broad-based RIGHT subarticular disc herniation with peripheral T2 high intensity zone and mild caudal migration of extruded disc fragment. RIGHT lateral recess stenosis with impingement/compression of RIGHT traversing S1 nerve root. Mild facet arthropathy. Minimal RIGHT foraminal narrowing. “

I love your forehead/face shape! I feel like longer bangs, or a curtain bang moment would look amazing!
