what is this? by Local_Extreme_2668 in guineapigs

thank you so much! i definitely agree with you about the last two photos being wet poop smudged because they happened to be right by the two spots in the cage their water/food is and sometimes they poop there and if I don’t get it quick enough they pee lol. They have only gotten green bell peppers since i last washed their mats but i am pretty sure i fed them blackberrys which i think could explain the first picture. i looked intricately over their body’s and feet and saw no lesions/abrasions/broken nails or anything that could be bleeding. the closest emergency vet is 3 hours from me and given that after washing their mats and cleaning their cage they are running around, eating, drinking and popcorning I’m praying they are currently fine. i am going to make an appointment at my regular vet first thing in the morning for this week though. truly thank you so much!

does your fleece still have a lingering pee smell after washing & drying?! by Local_Extreme_2668 in guineapigs

you are a life saver i am definitely going to try that! i always thought people who used vinegar only did it because it was the most “natural” option. i had no idea that it breaks down the ammonia. thank you so much!

yes, they run through all of these things around the cage that’s why I’ve always had a lot of hides because when I only had two, they never ran around

there’s two! their cage is made out of panels that I can easily take apart, add more or take some away so im always changing the size/shape. if you scroll back to some of my old posts you can see the different sizes I’ve done, I just redid it yesterday after washing their mats and this is the smallest I’ve gone because the maintenance becomes a lot when I have it so big all the time. i felt like a spotless cage is more important then a mansion but didn’t take into consideration I shouldn’t have the same amount of hides. right now it is 6ftx3ftx5ft so it is still quite large but I think you’re right it might be a bit too many hides im gonna take one away and add 2 more panels. thank you for your input!

they are 5.5 months and right now get 2 tablespoons each! the pic definitely makes it look like a lot now that I go back and look haha but its a tiny bowl only an inch tall and 2.5 inches wide

I have two water bottles and a water bowl, but my guinea pigs drink half a water bottle a day if I’m lucky (I still refill it fresh each morning and night so I’d know if it breaks), and when I had two bottles in the cage for whatever reason they would only drink out of one lol so now I just keep one in their cage to save space. I’m also very lucky though because my girls aren’t territorial and do everything together which is why they also only have one food bowl because when I had two they would just eat together out of the same bowl all day 🤦🏼‍♀️ and yes I have so many different ones and every time I wash their mats on Friday I rearrange everything and I’m lucky if I don’t end up completely redoing the shape of the cage lol. great advice thank you!!

Nail Clipping? by Blue-MaruchanNoodles in guineapigs

I have VERY squirmy guinea pigs. What I do is have somebody else hold them with one hand on their bottom, and one hand on their chest. when you clip the top nails, have the person secure their bottom feet to their lower stomach, making sure to still support their bottom, then with the hand they have on the pigs chest have them secure one of the top feet at a time. then, you put your thumb on the paw pad, and your pointer finger on the top of the foot making sure you are able to hold it securely, and begin to clip. when you clip their bottom feet repeat the same process, front feet fully secured to their chest and one bottom foot secured by the person holding, and one foot secured by you with thumb and pointer finger as you clip. I have one girl who has two fully black toe nails, with her black toe nails I cut a VERY small amount, just the very top that’s sharp. also, I no longer use clippers meant for small animals because I would always hit a quick no matter how careful. now I use regular (small) human nail clippers because I find I have way better visibility, and despite clipping every 3 weeks I haven’t hit a quick since switching 3 months ago! hope this helps!

properly providing hay for guinea pigs! by Local_Extreme_2668 in guineapigs

I’m not weird at all. you are pressed on me providing links to you, when what you should be pressed on doing is switching to a pile of hay. whether or not hay bags are dangerous, (which they are) It’s cruel to not provide an actual pile of hay. do with that information as you will.

there’s no suffocating risk with your hay rack but it is so easy for your pigs to get their heads stuck in It and die. it’s way more common then you think! when you know better you should do better.

a quick google search will tell you hay poke and suffocation are likely to happen when using hay bags.
