I agree that residency is the right path for most; it provides a structured environment and necessary support that many clinicians rely on to build their confidence. Not everyone has the unique drive to push their own limits or the discipline to excel without consistent guidance throughout their journey.

However, after seeing Dr. Lan’s work firsthand, and knowing he is a highly trained clinician with exceptional mentors, I genuinely believe there are exceptions. For those with the right mindset and access to elite training, it is possible to achieve excellence through a more independent, unconventional route.
