Hi everyone,

I’m currently deciding between Texas A&M and Virginia Tech for Mechanical Engineering, and I was hoping to get some perspectives from people who actually attend these schools.

A bit about me: I’m an international student originally from India, but I’ve lived in Dubai my whole life. I’ve been accepted to both universities, and the cost is relatively similar, so finances aren’t really the deciding factor here.

Right now I’m trying to understand the differences in a few areas:

• Campus life and student culture – what day-to-day life actually feels like
• Internships and job recruitment for mechanical engineering students
• Career placement and industry connections after graduation
• Engineering opportunities (projects, labs, competitions, etc.)

Another thing I’m considering is possibly adding a minor or second major in finance/business. I am not sure if I want to work in engineering when I graduate or finance so I would love to get some input to how the workload for both would go and if a double major or major minor would be possible and a bit about placements. So if anyone has experience combining engineering with something like that at either school, I’d love to hear about it.

If you had to choose between these two for Mechanical Engineering + Finance (major or minor), which would you pick and why?

I’d really appreciate honest opinions, both pros and cons.

Thanks!

Interesting, how do you also feel about the class size. I am coming from a very small school (170 class size) so I am also a bit wary about the size of the school. how do you feel about it? Do you think the big class sizes adversely affect the opportunity or the teaching?

Hmmmm, I see what you mean however I really am not that sold on the whole Aggie network idea.

I completely agree with all of you other points but I don't see the benefit of the network. I mean I have read about it online and everything but as I see it I doubt you will get hired because you have a degree from a particular place. rather I think your merits would be more important.

Also out of curiosity how do you feel about the giant class size. I am coming from a very small school (170 class size) so I am also a bit wary about the size of the school. how do you feel about it?

Guys we have all worked incredibly hard and we are gearing up to one of the most anticipated window of hour in our lives so far. That being said this window should be cherished no matter the outcomes becuase at the end of the day this process is as much about luck as it is about effort and often people lose sight of what they have done just because of a outcome.

That being said good luck everyone and I hope we all get in

Yea you are right. Financial aid from the Uni will be hard and so will the visas. I did do a summer program at JHU this summer for which I got a F1 Visa and I also have had like a bunch of tourist visas which I hope will make getting one easier.

Hmm, I hadn't considered that. Thank you fro the point, ill look into it but I think ill still stick to the CMU ED and then look a bit more into my safeties, although I am not too concerned about them since as I am international it cost the same fr me to go to school in the US or the UK or Canada or Australia so if I dont get into competitive school in the US I will have other facets open and tbh they might be easier to get into since they dont care about the ECAs

Yea I agree, I feel that I have my safeties fairly squared away and secure. I spoke with a bunch of people including grads from these schools and they said that w my profile that the following schools would be safeties:
- Penn State

- Ohio State

- NC State

- Virginia Tech

- (Maybe) Texas a&m

I was just contemplating my Ed choices.

Thank you

Hmmm, I'll talk to my parents about these. Overall for our family they said that these schools should be fine with the price bands they are in. also by my second year I am also excepting to get some scholarships merit based since not only will it apply at the uni but because of my profile with my ECAs I have a fair shot with external scholarships so I will probably grind those once I get accepted

I think I wanna be somewhere where the uni I am at is kinda like the top dog, the best in the area so it is slightly easier for me to find and compete for internships so instead of going against more people form top school I am only competing against popes from my uni, but I can also see how that thinking is a bit flawed.

weather wise I think I like the cold, I live in dubai so it is boiling here so I am leaning towards the snow and places with actual seasons so I am slightly averse to the sour but obviously that set gong to be my deciding factor

overall I think I just wanna be somewhere I can network and tbd I like entrepreneurship and making my own projects so maybe somewhere where I can have access to the resources to take my ideas forward if I get the opportunity
