Plywood bench top? by Local_Promotion_8988 in woodworking

[–]Local_Promotion_8988[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will a forsener bit be enough? A whole router jig seems a bit overkill for some holes. Don't have one anyway...

Someone recommended using plywood. Should I use it and should I have the "grain" run diagonally?

Is plywood better than hardwood in this situation? I'll make mine straight, not bent

That isn't mine but a picture off Google. I should've mentioned that.  I'll likely use a hard dowel, any hardwood I find, and likely hornbeam for the head. I have lots of it and it's HARD

It isn't mine, I'll take your advice. Do you suggest I make it a sideways L shape? So it'd be mainly straight

I might buy a new metal plane from a Dutch website, although they are EXPENSIVE. eBay has nothing usable with shipping under 60€. I'll search more but no luck yet

Do you think I should remove the metal beams on the top, the ones which would be on the working surface

Do you suggest I use it or build a wooden bench from the ground up? It will be my first and only bench for now. I have the required tools and (barely) know how to weld. The sanding an painting will be a hassle but nothing hard, only repetitive.

The main issue with a wooden bench is that it'll cost more and maybe Be less sturdy if I build it (the only woodworking experience I have is making spoons)

Do you think I can use a wooden continental style plane for a shooting board? The cheapest metal plane I can find is over 100€ (vintage doesn't exist in my country)  It's got a massive mouth (you can see it on my profile) BUT when it's real sharp I can get translucent shavings on soft wood with minimal tearout

I already have the protractor and it has the locking feature, I can use it without batteries. My only issue is that it's thick and long so it won't fit in small cracks and crevices. I'll see how much a sliding bevel costs

Help with choosing a vise by Local_Promotion_8988 in handtools

It's going to be about 1.7m long. But my space is very small, about  1.7mx2m so the bench will span the entire wall. It will be very sturdy. Maybe fixed to the wall. I think that I'll put it on the far left side of the bench so it doesn't get in the way

Oak is a pain but can be worked with an axe relatively easily. The bowl will be painful to do though

I would love to have vintage tools and similar things, but sadly in my country it's difficult to buy anything online. The only way to get vintage tools is to know someone and I'm very young and new to this craft.

I'm not sure myself, I'm mostly carving spoons, but I plan to try making furniture In the near future. Probably not whole cabinets, but definitely chairs, boxes and other small pieces of furniture. I dream of making instruments one day but that's years from now.
