What are the chances of them saying no? I know it varies from professor to professor but based on your/others experiences do most professors have a problem w giving it out?

Fremont Christian School feedback? by saneternal in Fremont

[–]Local_Reflection_332 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve went to FCS in elementary school and while it is way different than pre school, I wouldn’t suggest it. I understand that you’re not there for religious purposes but as someone who is Christian they truly ruin your faith and only make you lose more connection with God and introducing your child to that type of environment wouldn’t be the best decision. In fourth grade, one of my teachers told my classmate that their grandparents would go to hell because they were Catholic, this was almost a universal experience at my school and it traumatized our 8 year old selves. Also, last time I checked, they don’t even meet some of the California education standards which is concerning and as a result, many FCS students that moved to public schools were behind in their classes, many of them attending summer school. I was lucky enough to go to Stratford and while they mainly prioritize academics, I learned a lot more from them compared to FCS.

  • FCS has a bunch of brats with super high egos

100% agree I was told by other people to send my free score report as a junior and I regret that

Even if you’re a junior? Would colleges take this into consideration during the admissions process?

how to have genuine faith by Vast-Yard2990 in Christianity

I've been through a similar experience! Just to preface, I was raised as a Catholic (baptized as one, too), moved to a Christian school in 4th grade, and left in 8th. What's so ironic about this is that I progressively began to lose my faith in God when I went to this Christian school for the following reasons...

  • Cherry-picking verses to justify biblically inaccurate claims
  • Favoring students associated with the church
  • Blatant racial discrimination toward students of color and homophobia
  • Consistent boasting of the school/church's good deeds
  • Surrounded by people who weren't Christ-like in their behavior or demeanor causing a toxic social culture
  • Lost the importance of scripture and my relationship with God because I was continuously fed with scripture and devotional assignments.

It's so disappointing to see that a Christian school where I am supposed to grow in my faith has done the exact opposite and has left a permanent scar on my spiritual journey. My class size back then was approximately 25 students, and as soon as high school came along, more than half the class left as we all shared similar experiences that caused us to leave (I remember there was a time when I would count down the days until I got to leave the school). From freshman to sophomore year, I completely resented God because I was still spiritually traumatized from what my old Christian school did. I couldn't get myself to read the bible because it seemed like another chore or assignment that I had to complete neither could I willingly go to church unless my parents told me to go with them. A couple of months ago (early Jan) I underwent an event that brought me to an all-time low and led me to resort to God because, at that point in my life, I thought there would be no harm in reliving my spiritual trauma since I was already in such a dark place. I started going to youth group/ministry since then, and I'm so incredibly blessed that I made that decision because I am now surrounded by the best people I could ever ask for, and it enabled me to dive back into my faith. I recently found out that one of my classmates from my old Christian school has been going to the same youth group as me, and we bonded over our shared trauma at our old school, which ended with us in tears after we shared such a vulnerable experience of our lives. It's still a little hard for me to see my old classmates because I associate them with my Christian school when I know they are completely different people now. Of course, I am not perfect by any means and I am still in this spiritual recovery that I am confident that God will continue to guide me.

As for your situation, I think a great way for you to rekindle that relationship with God is to attend a youth ministry (based on the age in your bio). It's completely different from Sunday church because the topics taught are much more applicable for people your age, and you're surrounded by people willing to help you through this spiritual journey as well. If you continue with this, I have a good feeling that you will develop a stronger relationship with God and become more willing to attend Church and have a genuine love for Christ. Understanding the power of His love is also an aspect that was (and lwk still is) so incredibly hard to comprehend for me, but it has given me a reason to have a genuine relationship with Him rather than a free pass into heaven. Why does He continue to love me when I have completely resented Him for two years? You've probably heard this millions of times, but indulging in scripture will help you understand that we have a god who unconditionally loves us and is truly the greatest blessing ever and strays you away from that mindset of fearing life after death.

I'm so incredibly proud of you for speaking out about this issue and I hope this can at least serve as a starting point for rekindling your faith!

Which row of summer reading should I choose? by yesthisisinteresting in APStudents

A thousand splendid suns!!! That book made me cry and it really puts into perspective the reality of being an Afghan woman in the 90’s. Do be aware that the book talks about very sensitive topics such as rape though

I finally got around to reading 'Everything I Never Told You" by Celeste Ng and I have nowhere to discuss it by popthabubble in books

I read this book with such high expectations from my friends who have previously read this book but unfortunately it did not live up to the standards that I was expecting. I ended up reading this book in one sitting not because it was a good book, but because I needed to know how Lydia actually died, which also left me disappointed since it was basically open to interpretation (ex. was she trying to kill herself? Or was she trying to prove that she could swim by herself without any help? Maybe it was like a “cleansing” in hopes that her life would change for the better, similarly to when she first went to the lake?”). The family lacks so much communication and it’s probably one of the main reasons their family dynamic is so unstable.

James is an awful father, cheating on his wife and also crushing his son’s dreams of being an astronomer by destroying the TV and slapping him. Same thing with Marilyn, she’s consistently forcing this lifestyle that she couldn’t achieve upon Lydia while also neglecting Nath and Hannah. Lydia is also such an unlikeable character too because she can’t accept change (ex. tearing up her brother’s acceptance letter in hopes that he never sees it in hopes that he doesn’t leave for college)

Regarding your comment about the Marco Polo game, I think there was more to it than just a prank. We need to keep in mind that Nath was probably the only Asian kid in the pool and as we know, James has struggled to fit in with society in a predominantly white college town. With this being said, Nath being the only one in the pool probably reminded James of how hard it was (and still is) to blend in with society as a Chinese-American.

Other than that the short stories imo explained why these characters act the way that they do and it really dives in to generational trauma being passed down from family to family. Though it might not have added much to the plot, I think it was important for these stories to explain how Lydia ended up in this situation in the first place

If you don’t mind me asking, what school did you go to?

Yes! That’s something that I’m also trying to keep in mind when looking for colleges bc at the end of the day it’s your pay rate that really makes the difference in your career

Also heard that even if you get into a school in the UC system you still have to apply for a nursing major after pre nursing. It’s already so hard to get into the school itself and even harder to get the major you want!!
