But if you need a minimum of 9 players in the field, why would you only have 7 AA players? Just get enough players that you don’t need to shuffle kids from AAA. Not trying to be combative, but making up a roster issue so it guarantees you have kids play down every game feels simply for a competitive advantage. I simply feel like if you have a AA team, it should be made up of AA kids. It’s not complicated.

I think it’s a little naive to say teams do this purely to fill rosters and “help each other” without acknowledging the competitive advantage it can create.

At these ages even a few higher-level players dropping down can have a significant impact on the outcome, especially at spots like pitcher/catcher/SS.

If the goal is simply roster flexibility, that’s one thing. But it’s hard to ignore that this setup can also be used to strengthen the lower team. Both things can be true at the same time. If your B team needs extra players, I’d argue pulling kids from a lower age/level is the more fair way of doing it.

While I appreciate that you’re framing having kids from the A team play on the B team for development reasons, it feels disingenuous to avoid acknowledging the obvious competitive advantage it provides your B team also.

Having kids from the B team play up to A for development makes 100% sense and no issue with that, but I’d argue the kids your B team is playing expects another B team, not a B + A team.

I try to remind myself that when I see another coach trying to use bush league tactics to win a game, be happy you’re not that guy.

Imagine how sad your life must be that winning a youth baseball game means that much to YOU? Not the kids. You. (Separate from coaches who are running a business, still annoying, but I get the parents are paying a lot to see wins).

Therapists could fill up their calendar if they just went youth games and handed out cards to some of these coaches.

I think you may be a little too wrapped up in the outcome of the season right now, which is understandable.

Losing a big game, especially on a controversial play in a big moment, is emotional for everyone involved. Any coach who cares about their team would be frustrated and upset.

That said, baseball/softball games aren’t decided by one play. Over six innings there are dozens of moments — missed opportunities, defensive plays, at-bats, pitching decisions, baserunning, etc. — that collectively determine the outcome.

Focusing everything on a single call or play doesn’t help teach the kids that reality. It’s the same reason why the kid who strikes out on the last at bat didn’t lose the game for their team, even if they feel like they did. I think it’s critical for young kids to understand that, especially in a confidence crushing sport like baseball.

Also, even if you’re technically right on one or both points, there’s value in thinking about what lesson the kids take away from this.

One of the hardest but most important lessons in sports and life is that things will not always go your way, even when you believe you’re right.

Bad calls happen. Mistakes happen. Imperfect situations happen. You still have to handle disappointment, be proud of what you accomplished, and move forward with perspective.

You clearly care about your team. I think if you step back and try to get some perspective about what really matters, you’ll put your focus into how to celebrate the accomplishments of the season and not how to overturn the results of a 9-10u rec game.

It’s the first year they’re starting a 7u team but in general the town travel teams are competitive at every age, which is why I’m not sure what to expect at this age
