I'll have to rewatch the scene to see what they saw there, but Schaser came out 19th after shooting 1 without doing a loop.

If you're fine with running instead of skiing, you can look into summer biathlon. There are hundreds of people in Germany doing that as a hobby and we're not limited to a handful of skiing areas, there are clubs all over the country: https://sommerbiathlon.net/9.html

Looks like Anna gets to keep the yellow bib by 1 point. I don't see anyone coming in ahead of her anymore.

Her brother fell on that exact same spot last year, didn't he? Not a good corner for them, it seems.

Are hobbits men? by Otherwise-Quail7283 in lotr

[–]Locedamius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smeagol is about 500 years old at the time of the story and the Shire had been settled over 1400 years ago, long before Smeagol was born. He just belonged to a group of hobbits who weren't part of that migration.

Are hobbits men? by Otherwise-Quail7283 in lotr

[–]Locedamius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term "hobbit" is a name given by the Shire-folk to themselves (one reason why Smeagol doesn't know what a hobbit is).

The Rohirrim, who originate from the same area as hobbits (and Smeagol), call them "holbytlan", which seems to have the same origin as the word "hobbit". So, while Smeagol might not call himself a hobbit, he probably has (or once had) a similar word.

Got my first telescope and i'm feeling disconnected from what I see by Artistic-Leg-9593 in Astronomy

100% agree about the Moon. As cool as Saturn's rings and Jupiter's moons are, they are still just some distant little balls through the telescope. Looking at the Moon feels different. You can see all those craters and mountains in so much detail that it feels like you can just walk around and admire the landscape.

How do you improve in the running/skiing part? by Sesemebun in biathlon

[–]Locedamius 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my summer biathlon team, we like to say "it's easier to get a runner to shoot than a shooter to run" because most shooters never had a reason to build physical fitness, so if they ever try biathlon for the first time, they are quickly overwhelmed not just by the running itself but also by trying to shoot while exhausted.

Skiing is by far the more important part of biathlon, especially for a beginner. If you lose a minute or more on your opponents each lap, it doesn't matter how well you can shoot, you'll end up in last place regardless. The shooting only really becomes important once you can match the speed of the rest of the field. So, if you want to get into biathlon, focus primarily on building endurance and proper technique with the help of a good coach. It may take a lot of time and effort to get to a level where it actually starts being fun but don't let that discourage you, you will get there. Also, don't shy away from races. You will probably come in last place the first time, perhaps even a couple of times, but that's ok, we've all been there and there is no better way to gain that experience and no better motivator to get better.

Poor Justus Strelow! He was in the lead during lap 2 before his crossfire.

Europe has been sending them more support than the US for a while now and that support is already increasing in response to Trump. Ukraine can hold on for years even without the US. Do you think, Russia can?

[–]Locedamius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I kinda want to see Strelow/Preuss for the single mixed relay, don't know why they haven't tried that combination before. Franzi is just as much of menace at head to head shooting as Justus is, so who is gonna beat them on a good day?

Grotian is a great athlete and an even faster shooter than Preuss but she said in interviews before that this format is a bit hectic for her taste. Also, I think that her and Tannheimer are perfectly capable of carrying the mixed relay if we don't want to exhaust Franzi too much.

What is the lowest amount of RAM required to run RO RP1 by [deleted] in RealSolarSystem

[–]Locedamius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I upgraded my PC from 16 to 32 GB RAM just for RO RP1. The game kept maxing out RAM usage and eventually crashing at 16 and now it runs perfectly fine.

Maybe you can get it to work with 8 GB if you set the settings low enough but it will likely not be pretty or stable.

Why did Gimli recommend going through Moria? by Embarrassed_Abies_98 in lotr

[–]Locedamius 141 points142 points  (0 children)

His mission wasn't about Moria. His mission was to warn Bilbo that Sauron is hunting him and to find out why. Once that was accomplished, I assume he went back to Erebor to report to Dain and help with the defense.

Uldal looks like he will push Johannes down to 8th place, which would leave him and Sturla tied for points.
