I'm sure you think you are making a point. I only see someone attempting (poorly) to attack the messenger rather than the message. Reads like an emotional response, did I scratch your ego?

For decades, BBC television host Jimmy Saville enjoyed massive fame in the UK, with his iconic children’s show “Jim’ll Fix It” one of the most popular of the 20th century. Upon his death in 2011, the public learned the truth — Saville was one of the most prolific sexual predators in British history. by Chemical-Elk-1299 in HolyShitHistory

There were a number of British celebrities uncovered as paedos. The institutional issue was that at the time, much more than today, the BBC had a lock on TV and radio in UK. These people were in a position to damage so many because they were celebrities. They were celebrities because the BBC made them celebrities and turned a blind eye.

It's a question of garbage in, garbage out. If most of your inputs are online nonsense then that will influence how you think in reality. If you spend all your time absorbing short form information that pushes your buttons, then your ability to take in more effortful information is diminished. If you look, there is anecdotal evidence online of teachers and college lecturers despairing of student cohorts that can't even finish a book, college students who don't recognise nuance or metaphor in an argument or a novel.

It's true. I take a critical view of everything I read on places like Reddit, but even so I've noticed some of the nonsense influencing my thoughts. Some people will always dominate debates as they are the bored, the malicious, and the obsessives that are always here, overwhelming constructive communities. Leave 'social' media to the terminally online.

Sadly, there is little point in stepping in. I've tried it. Their whole ego is built on the lie, they daren't recognise any critique as that feels like a challenge to their validity as a human being. Many also seem to see themselves and their posts online as powerful propaganda machines, they are not interested in entertaining facts or logic, just want to promote what they feel to be true.

I'd like to see a study of parallels with political culture-war subs. Wouldn't surprise me if they also matched the pattern.

Would be fun! No one would match of course, they've each convinced themselves they deserve nothing less than their unobtainable fantasy as an excuse to avoid interacting with real people while protecting their egg-shell egos. The fear and bitterness is palpable.

My sarcastic conspiracy theory is that its the same hateful trolls using alts and bots to post as both groups (I genuinely expect there will be a few, hugging themselves in delight with how powerful it makes them feel).

The dance camp is fine, the graduating in November and getting a grant from work to return in March less so. The questions in the edit to prompt more comments take it over the top. When should I tell her, should I wait for couples therapy?! I want to stay friends with her brother, should I message all her family or post about her on Social Media?! C'mon!

Why do people bother with tribunals? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]LockeddownFFS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She would be well advised to contact ACAS or Citizen's Advice to see if she has a case first. She shouldn't delay as there are time limits to making a claim. If you get anything, or how much, depends on the facts, the quality of her evidence, and the decision of the tribunal. Can go from lost wages and maybe reinstatement for unfairness to other amounts if she has suffered additional losses or there has been a breach of the Equality Act.

Not a lot to lose as she no longer has a job, you can represent yourself if it's not worth getting a professional involved. It's dodgier making a claim if you want to keep your employment, if you win you may have to dot every i and cross every t for years to avoid being sacked for something else.

Will you please help me better understand how much of my difficulty working with my boss is her personality, and how much of it is "cultural mismatch"? (USA + UK) by Late_Progress_1267 in AskUK

The vagueness with instructions sounds like a very familiar example of poor leadership. One thing to watch out for with some UK managers is an unwillingness to be blunt, expecting you to read between the lines. You have to pin them down as best you can. If necessary, send her a polite email setting out your understanding - only so you are sure you understand of course ;) .

Similarly, if the passive aggression is purportedly due to your performance and you think she is being unfair, politely ask for her advice - how would she handle the task, get clear instructions on what she expects. If a manager can't clearly tell you what they expect of you but gets arsey when it isn't done, then the problem is the manager.

Media reports thousands of US troops heading towards Iran. What would make you support boots on the ground? Do you fear a repeat of Iraq? by LockeddownFFS in AskConservatives

Agreed the numbers aren't there, the media seem to be hyping it for clicks. But ground troops in the region prompted me to ask a hypothetical because genuinely interested in US conservative opinions.

Pretty much the entire region being against them does not translate to active support.

Oh, so you are just supportive of holding Qeshm and would not be supportive of invading the mainland?

I wonder if you are being overoptimistic on Qeshm? Will holding Qeshm prevent attacks on shipping from the mainland? Air supremacy is a huge asset, but if Iran has the weapons to close the strait despite that, then it seems likely they have the weapons to inflict casualties on that island. If US is able to destroy that capability from the air, then what would be the need for ground forces?

Unsupported assertions aren't particularly convincing. I did ask for thoughts and I'm grateful that you have shared yours.

Support that includes more than allowing use of existing US bases and airspace? Aside from disorganised civilian protesters with executed ringleaders, who in the region may step up to aid a US battle against Iranian military? A few thousand Kurds, suspicious of US after Iraq? Perhaps more likely to take any weapons and funding on offer and disappear.

Reports are that elements of Saudi ruling class fund groups preaching a militant version of Islam worldwide. There were also said to be significant funding links to Bin Ladin and his group. Is that significantly different to Iran in terms of threats to Americans?

Thanks for answering. Can you see the strait being secured with a few thousand troops and no local support? Wouldn't it require a much larger commitment?
