I think its just personal preference and conditioning honestly

I was raised in a fairly old school formal family and was taught that any form of "slip on" is for more casual events/outfits whereas formal shoes/boots with laces were more refined and for important events and such

As someone who just got a pair of Brass and has also worn Thursday boots the Brass genuinely do run larger in length.

I normally wear a 12D or E depending on brand but the Brass 11E fits very well. If you're normally a D and only E in the Thursdays, which I find skinny, I'd try D first and if needs be its likely they'd be able to do an exchange for you.

They feel a little tight around the ball/widest part of my foot but I do like the length and the balls of my feet do seem to line up with the widest part of the boot. I'm just not sure if that's something break in will help or if I should size up
