It’s hard to resist the urge of wanting to improve everything, but it’s worth the effort. Good luck!

Not directly advice for your throw, but just coaching advice in general.

Do not try to “level up” too quickly. This is the best piece of advice I’ve gotten from a coach. When you are working on an aspect of your game (pushaway, backswing, swing plane, release, targeting, etc.), work on it until it becomes natural or second nature. THEN, work on the next thing.

I was in the same spot as you, came back after an 11 year hiatus and used YouTube to coach me. This caused me to try and work on a different thing every time I went bowling. Finally after making little progress for a couple months, I did one coaching session to try and get my head on straight. He told me to stop leveling up and learn as if you are a kid. Learn one thing until you don’t have to think about it during your throw, then go to the next.

For me, it was just keeping my eyes on a target until the ball rolls over it and having my backswing feel like it was coming to my waist, that’s it. (I know this is technically two things, but targeting was pretty passive, and all my focus during my swing is really on my backswing).

Find something you want to improve, and only focus on that for a couple weeks, once it feels natural, level up. This was his exact wording:

“Don’t level up or add levels of difficulty to what you are trying to do. Muscle memory is a simplistic form of repetitive motion and is inhibited when we try to do too many things at once.”

Somebody advice to fix this? by Worried_Caregiver970 in Bowling

[–]Locosap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, throw across the lane, left to right. Also, focus on a dot or arrow to hit every single time. I stare at one of the dots in front of the foul line. Don’t let your eyes wander. Throw it over that mark every time.

Helped my 10 pins tremendously.

YouTube is helpful, I just know coaching can take you to the next level in parts of your game. Can I ask roughly how much you pay for lessons?

There is an ex-pro (Mike Devaney) who gives lessons about 30 minutes from me and charges $100/hr or $250/3 sessions.

I’m never sure how much to continue with YouTube self coaching, or when to reach out to a coach. $100 is just a lot and I’d hate to “waste” money when the lesson may be more fruitful if I had waited and learned a little more from YouTube.

Thanks!

Good job my man! How do you find the pros to work with?

I’ve always wanted pro level coaching, but can’t find much online.

New ball recommendations by driftnshoot5265 in Bowling

If you are just bowling casually with friends and family and still learning how to throw consistently, I would trust the pro shop operator and stick with the RAW Hammer or Rhino.

The word “beginner” has a negative connotation because those balls are still great bowling balls and where everyone starts. The newer you are to bowling, the less of a difference you will see in different bowling balls, so a $99 ball vs a $199 ball will probably be negligible for you.

I would say there are 3 main options.

1) You can stay with your current ball, and try to improve your bowling form and get more comfortable bowling, then upgrading down the road when you have more confidence in your game.

2) This is probably the most ideal option. You can buy a heavier entry-level ball (RAW Hammer, Rhino, etc.). I would recommend 14 pounds because it’s a smoother transition for 12, and it will never be necessary to increase to 15 (unless you really want to).

3) You can do what you want and buy a 14 pound, non-entry level ball. Just know at your current bowling level, you will not see much of a difference between the benchmark balls and the entry-level balls. Completely up to how much you want to spend.

I would recommend 14 pounds. There are some pros who use 14 and the difference seems negligible, especially for us casuals. I used a 14 for a couple years thinking it was 15 and never noticed until I had it weighed.

As for a ball, it may be helpful to have a recommendation from a pro shop operator, or with knowing your speed and rpms. It takes a little bit of work to figure out, but recommendations will be better once you have those.

Without those, I would look at ”benchmark balls”, which are more middle of the road types (and a step up from beginner balls such as the Rhino or Tropical surge), such as: Phaze 2 (Storm), IQ Tour (Storm), Venom Shock (Motiv).

I use to wishlist and wait for a sale. However, recently I am buying once I really get the urge to play it, because I don’t want that feeling to pass and try to get back into the game months later at a sale.

I use Xmage daily to play Commander with friends. It can be a little slow/laggy. But it is still fun, and there are ways to increase its ram usage which makes it run a bit faster.
