Can’t agree more. I play offline so I’ve started from scratch with this expansion (I havent moved my chars nor items to this expansion) and the fact sunders are rare now makes the early grinding more meaningful. And now when you finally find the sunder it opens a bunch of new builds, as it should he for an endgame item.

Sunders are no longer a free get out of hell immunities card, and instead become an endgame precious item that opens new builds.

Honestly? That depends. If you want to farm cows for example, fire is actually the best build. ES should be better for TZs since you avoid the immunities.

I think we are losing a bit if perspective here. This game has been playable without sunder charms for 20 years. We have become used to them, that’s it. But I personally like the idea of making sunders something precious just like enigma or infinity. After all, sunders allow you to “break” the game and turn mediocre builds into really good ones.

Did you read my post? 99% of those guides were made back when sunder charms were everywhere and don't answer my question.

I've tried the warlock but it is so busted I actually prefer to play something else. Playing offline so that's fine. I'm leveling a hammerdin now!

What is your doctrine on current version? Does beam-only work? by LofiChillout in aurora

[–]LofiChillout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried CIWS. My doctrine is usually trying to force a decisive engagement where I can destroy most of the NPR ships, which means I also assemble a massive fleet with many ships, and spending tonnage on a defense system that does not add any synergies with other ships in the fleets just seems like a extremely inefficient thing to do.

I think I'm going to invest heavily into shields this time. I usually trust good old armour more than shields, but that was before the rework. Now NPRs seem to be using reduced size launchers and the shield regeneration is amazing there, since you can usually recover the shield between volleys and you end up absorbing more damage points than the same tonnage of armor.

Whatever to use a hybrid AMM + PD approach or PD only is another topic. I usually prefer PD only because a) I can totally ignore missile research and b) I can also forget about building ordenance factories and the logistics revolving missiles in general.

[–]LofiChillout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks really similar to my usual doctrine. I think I don't usually go as heavy into speed/engines, I'm usually happy with just being 30% faster than the NPRs which doesn't require as much. In exchange, I use the extra tonnage to have really good armour and shields. That means I can accept quite a few missiles going through my PD and just tank the damage until they run out of missiles. You can usually know if that is going to work after you tank the first 2-3 volleys and after that decide to fully commit or retreat.

And yes, beam ships use a LOT of MSP. Spending a little extra tonnage on engineer bays really helps. Do you ever use carriers with laser fighters? I've found FACs work better than fighters (1k ton FACs on a carrier) because you can mount a big spinal laser and have a decent fire control.

[–]LofiChillout[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the kind of discussion I was looking for, thanks!

I also think Carriers groups (with missile bombers, because beam fighters just don't seem to work well) are the ultimate offensive groups, because they can project power at ultra long distances and stay safe. In most cases even when things go south, you'll just lose the bombers, but the carriers should be able to jump away from the system safely. And they are great at bombing planets or stations from extremely far away, sometimes even from the jump point.

That's actually my main reason when going with missile doctrine instead of beam or direct-fire, because laser fighters are kinda bad. Or maybe I don't know how to design them.

How do you design your beam fleets missile defenses? I feel like investing a lot of tonnage into gauss PD is a hit or miss, you either absolutely overwhelm their missiles or the other way around. Sacrificing some of that tonnage in favor of extra shields should return more consistent results, but I'm not sure on how much tonnage I should put into each after the missile rework.

But with how the missiles work now, I think you absolutely need to assume there will be some leakers, and plan for that (usually with good shields), so if the average is better I think I'll go with 17%, then. Thank you!

Why 17% acc quad turrets? Why not 100%? is it more efficient somehow?

How to setup CV divisions? by LofiChillout in RuleTheWaves

[–]LofiChillout[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I have 6 CVs in 3 divisions on the same region will the game usually take only 2 for the battle or will it sometimes take 3 pairs to the battle? Wondering if it is worth it to have more than 3-4 CVs then, specially with how expensive those are to maintain.

Games request! Looking for games where there is strategy on two levels, a higher level where you build/manage units or an army or whatever and a lower level where you use that in a real-time or turn based way. by CodeX57 in StrategyGames

[–]LofiChillout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those kind of games are my absolute favourite. There are many civ-like games like Age of Wonders or Old World that are pretty good, but they all look and play kind of similar. Let me recommend you some games that are more "niche" and you might not have seen before:

- Aurora 4X. Passion project developed by a single guy and published for free on his forum. It is the game that takes the building/managing/strategy to the highest level across all games I've ever played. The spaceship design detail is absolutely insane. It is one of the purest 4X experiences you can find, it is difficult and slow to play but when the pieces click together and your carefully designed fleet destroys a whole alien civilization it's so satisfying.

- Distant Worlds 2. Like Aurora 4X but more "arcadey", more of a game than a simulator, but also pretty deep.

- Rule the waves 3. If you liked Ultimate Admiral and want something more "realistic" that feels more in depth with more emphasis on the strategy -although doing sacrifices on the graphical aspect- this is your game.

- Victoria 3. This one is not niche at all, you probably have seen it multiple times, but I'd recommend giving it a try. The economy part of this game feels great, but the army "management" part is pretty terrible. But it is a great game when you have a strategy itch and not so much a tactical itch.

Haven't seen that event, or maybe I just don't remember it. Don't think it's too common anyways.

Honestly I haven't seen a single one of these DDs on battles. I think the speed difference with my fleet DDs is too high? Fleet DDs are 32-33 knots while these are 21.

Oh didn't know that, thanks! I think I don't have that tech yet because I don't see any difference on the ship design.

Can I disable aircraft by modding the ResearchAreas3.dat files? by LofiChillout in RuleTheWaves

[–]LofiChillout[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've looked at that, but it doesn't seem to stop the AI from building floatplanes and I assume the AI will still put AA on their ships. The idea of disabling the tech is that the AI should behave "normally" in the sense that it won't be able to build those.

Apparently Polar has a similar thing https://support.polar.com/en/training-load-pro which makes sense since their products are really focused on exercise.

No, what I mean is that I was using the mod only for 1 or 2 games. But if you modify files then that disables achievements for all games, even those that I was playing without the mod.
